A New Prophet with Deep Roots

The Sequential Prophet-6 is Dave Smith's tribute to his groundbreaking analog polysynth, the Prophet-5. Says Dave: "It's not a reissue, it's vintage with a modern twist." Driving this 6-voice beast are two discrete VCOs plus a sub oscillator per voice. Other features are two discrete filters per voice, a studio-grade, digital dual effects section, analog stereo distortion, onboard arpeggiator and step sequencer, a knob-per-function top panel, and a full-size, 4-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and aftertouch. We Sweetwater synth aficionados are ecstatic over Dave Smith Instruments' Sequential Prophet-6. You will be, too!

Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet-6 at a Glance:
  • Pure, cutting-edge analog: modern, yet classic
  • Studio-grade dual effects engine
  • Poly Mod and polyphonic step sequencer
  • This synth is amazingly easy to program
  • And it's even easier to play
Pure, cutting-edge analog: modern, yet classic

At the core of the Sequential Prophet-6 are two newly designed, discrete voltage-controlled oscillators (reinforced by a sub oscillator) per voice. These modern analog oscillators feature continuously variable waveshapes with triangle, sawtooth, and variable-width pulse waves. Two discrete filters per voice give you Michelangelo-class tone-sculpting prowess: a four-pole, resonant lowpass (inspired by the original Prophet-5 filter), and a two-pole, resonant highpass. Voltage-controlled amplifiers complete the Prophet-6's pure-analog signal path.

Studio-grade dual effects engine

The Sequential Prophet-6 sports a dual effects section that delivers studio-quality reverbs, delays (standard and Bucket Brigade Device - aka BBD), chorus, and phase shifter. Although the effects are digital, with 24-bit/48kHz resolution, true bypass maintains your pure-analog signal path. Also onboard is a 100% analog independent stereo distortion effect. In the early '80s, the Prophet-5's polyphony and patch memory were huge technological achievements; onboard effects were nothing but a pipe dream (if that). Kind of makes you appreciate the age we live in all the more, no?

Poly Mod and polyphonic step sequencer

The Prophet-5 rocked a feature called Poly Mod, and so does the Prophet-6 - with enhancements, of course. As with its predecessor, the Prophet-6's modulation sources are Filter Envelope and Oscillator 2 (both with bi-polar control). Destinations include Oscillator 1 frequency, Oscillator 1 shape, Oscillator 1 pulse width, lowpass filter cutoff, and highpass filter cutoff. Unison mode (featuring configurable voice count of 1-6 voices and key modes) also makes an encore. The Prophet-6's polyphonic step sequencer accommodates up to 64 steps and up to six notes per step, letting you build sequences polyphonically, with rests and external MIDI clock sync. There's also a full-function arpeggiator that you can sync to external MIDI clock as well.

This synth is amazingly easy to program

Dave Smith designed the Sequential Prophet-6 with a knob-per-function top panel that gives you instant access to virtually all its functions. You get 500 permanent factory programs, arranged in 10 banks of 100 programs each. You can, additionally, create and save up to 500 user programs. Toggle off the Preset button and you're in Live Panel (what you see is what you hear) mode, in which the sound of the Prophet-6 switches to the current settings of its controls.

And it's even easier to play

Dave Smith Instruments equipped the Sequential Prophet-6 with more than awe-inspiring sound. To inspire your creativity, this formidable synthesizer is fitted with a four-octave, semi-weighted keybed. Four octaves is, in our humble opinion, the optimal compromise between two-handed playability and portability, which makes the Prophet-6 your ideal gigging buddy, particularly when you factor in the instrument's tour-tough build quality. These keys, which are velocity and channel-aftertouch sensitive, feel silky smooth and just beg to be played. So go ahead - sit down for a sound design session with the Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet-6. We promise, you'll be hooked!

Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet-6 Features:
  • All-analog signal path; discrete VCOs and filters
  • 6 voices; 2 voltage-controlled oscillators plus sub oscillator per voice
  • 2 discrete filters per voice: 4-pole resonant lowpass and 2-pole resonant highpass
  • Digital dual-FX section (true bypass maintains a full analog signal path)
  • Multimode arpeggiator; 64-step polyphonic step sequencer
  • Full-size, 4-octave semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and aftertouch
Dave Smith Instruments Sequential Prophet-6: essential!

Reviews

Impeccable
I'm primarily a guitar player, but I got into synthesis after purchasing a Korg Minilogue XD from Sweetwater not too long after it came out. I ended up using the minilogue way more than I ever anticipated. I can't write a review with any level of authority , but I will say this thing sounds incredible if you like the sequential sound. It feels pretty much instantly gratifying to play with. A common criticism of the P6 is not being as capable of the complex patches that you can manage with cheaper Prophets. However, for many like myself, that is one of it's strengths. It's not as daunting for people like me who are still pretty new to synthesis, but it gives you enough options to make a wide range of sounds without a ton of menu diving. The owner manual is very digestible and can get you up and running quickly even if this is your first synth. This is by far the most expensive piece of gear i've ever purchased but it was 100% worth it. I've wanted one of these for so long, I couldn't pass it up on the recent sale. Thanks to my sales engineer Daniel Nesmith for helping me secure one of these before they sold out while a sale was close to ending/ recommending some really nice reasonably priced cables to go with my order.

Also, I have to add that the build quality feels really good to me as some have mentioned having bad experiences with that. I know theres always some outliers, but it's a little shocking to me because mine feel really well made. I've also never had any issues with anything I have purchased from Sweetwater in the ten plus years i've been doing business with them. In summary, if you like the sound of a Prophet, are looking for a higher end synth that can cover a lot of territory, and don't want to have to fight with it to get some greats sounds... You really cannot go wrong with a Prophet 6.
Just amazing...
I've had my Prophet 6 for about a month, using in the studio and on stage with my band. I've never heard a more beautiful-sounding synth (and I've owned plenty over the years). The Prophet 5 was always my dream synth, so owning this is sort of a dream come true...it's that good. I wish I'd bought it when it first came out, but have it now and couldn't be happier.

I won't repeat the many great comments that have already been made; I'll just add that if it's smooth and creamy analog with the ability to get really loud and nasty that you're looking for, this is your keyboard. It makes me smile everytime I play it, and I can't ask for more than that. As always, the Sweetwater experience was perfect. :)
Music background: Mostly a rock and jazz player with many years of stage and studio work.
Wonderful purchase experience, great synth with Q.C. Issues
5 stars for Cory, who was great in accommodating my purchase method. Class act.

While the synth itself is stunning, I have to knock a star off for Sequential's quality control. It shipped with a spring missing from one of the keys, which rendered its travel inoperable. After contacting Sequential's support, they were expedient in addressing my issues, while providing a PDF to self diagnose the problem. They ended up shipping me the spring and all is well. However, for an instrument of this caliber and price, an issue this glaring is hard to overlook.
Modern Classic

Folks, this thing is 100% the real deal. If you can't make nice sounds with this unit, it's time to pack it in. Also, the P6 is built better than my car. Yes, that is funny and kind of sad, but not a joke. No "wobbly knobs" here.

I've bonded with this instrument. I've plumbed the depths of my soul with it. I've written probably my favorite tunes to date on it.

Pro tip: pair it with a stereo reverb that you can blend in as a send effect with a mixer. The onboard effects are nice, but put this with a Big Sky and you may never touch the ground again.

Outstanding! The best synth ever!
The Prophet 6 is my favorite synth because it can produce such an amazingly wide range of sounds. And just the raw tone of those VCOs and Sequential filter make it come alive and breathe with an organic, mesmerizing quality that oozes out of every patch I make. I have never played another synth that has this much character, just busting out at the seams and grabbing the attention within every song I make using it. The OB-6 and Trigon are pretty good too, but the Prophet 6 is the best of the three. Highly recommended, you won't be disappointed!
