The New Classic

In the pantheon of classic solidbody electric guitars, it doesn’t get any more classic than a Les Paul Goldtop with P-90 pickups. We present to you the Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90. Your fingers will fly on this guitar’s silky, bound rosewood fingerboard and Plek’d frets. Fitted with a pair of Gibson’s legendary P-90 pickups, this ’Paul growls with the big cats. All the classic elements are here: carved maple top over solid mahogany, trapezoid fingerboard inlays, and that iconic gold finish — even the ones you don’t see, like handwired circuitry with Orange Drop caps. And you’ll enjoy effortless playability courtesy of a satisfying vintage ’50s profile neck. If you’ve been wanting a modern Les Paul with a chunky neck feel, P-90s, and premium appointments, Sweetwater has the one you’ve been waiting for. Take a walk on the classic side with the Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90.

The P-90: dare to sound different

We have many fiercely loyal P-90 fans here at Sweetwater. These guitarists know that the P-90 offers a unique tonal palette that is distinct from — and complements — humbuckers and traditional single-coils. Gibson’s first successful single-coil pickup, the P-90 can be heard on countless classic recordings. With its biting treble and high output, the P-90 cleans up nicely when you roll back your guitar’s volume pot. It’s an amazingly versatile pickup with its own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker and almost as hot. Hit your amp hard, and the P-90 really wails. Plugged into a proper high-gain tube amp, you can elicit grind, sizzle, and bark that would be impossible with humbuckers — or with other single-coils, for that matter. To hear P-90s brilliantly deployed in historical context, check out Santana’s fiery Woodstock performance or the Who’s masterful Live at Leeds album.

Vintage ’50s neck and Plek’d frets for optimized playability

Comfort and playability were two of Gibson’s primary concerns when they were designing the Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90. You’ll be delighted by how this guitar’s vintage ’50s neck profile comfortably fills your hand in just the right way. For your playing pleasure, the rosewood fingerboard is buffed to silky smoothness and bound with rolled edges so that no fret ends impede your dexterity. The frets are dressed to perfection using a Plek Pro machine for optimized playability. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this process levels the frets with pinpoint precision, providing you with the most playable fretboard you’re likely to own.

Nitro finish for the look and feel of a classic

Gibson gave the Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90 a gorgeous nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro finishes — standard back in the day — are significantly thinner than today’s polyurethane finishes, allowing the guitar to “breathe.” Nitro finishes not only look amazing, but they also enhance the instrument’s tonal qualities. The Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90 has the look and feel of a lovingly cared-for classic — one that will only improve with age.

Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s P-90 Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • Mahogany body, maple top; gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish
  • Mahogany neck, vintage ’50s profile, gloss nitro finish
  • Rosewood fingerboard, 12-inch radius, acrylic trapezoid inlays

Reviews

Unlike any of my other guitars
Finally got one of my dream guitars, love the historical look of the Goldtop.
I got this guitar set up by Sweetwater to my specs and it arrived PERFECT. Thank you Alex Roderick.
I ended up matching my 2023 Supreme to the specs of this goldtop.
I know there is a lot of hype about P90s and I take everything with a grain of salt. But they are different in a very good way, the volume and bite of these pickups clearly outshine my Burstbucker Pros in my Supreme, and I spent a lot of time adjusting my Burstbuckers by ear and I also had them set at Gibson specs at one point to see how they sounded.
I cannot put this thing down. Yes, the weight is noticeable but not an issue, I love the solid feel. And even though I don't have huge hands I really love the thicker 50s neck. I like is so much I am considering a 50s standard humbucker LP.
Exceeds all Expectations!
I was wanting a P90 guitar after trying a few HB sized P90s on other guitars and a Gold Top has been at the top of my want list for far too long. I reached out to Will Crisp, my Sweetwater "guy" and he hooked me up with a beauty. The fit and finish were flawless, which was a worry considering Gibson's late 2010's reputation. I have a 2018 Flying V and it sounds and plays great, but the fit and finish are severely lacking. But this 2025 Gold Top showed up 100% perfect. Not a ding or scratch to be found. You can almost swim in the gold finish and wood grain on the neck is stunning. The real stars of the show are pickups and the volume and tone pots! I'm a tinkerer and have changed pickups in most of my other guitars too many times to count, searching for "that sound". Whatever that is. It turns out that these Gibson P90s actually are the sound I've been chasing all this time. Crisp but not harsh in the top end, tons of midrange and a super tight low end that seems to work with Fender and Marshall amps amazingly well. I have a top-of-the-line Epiphone 1960 Tribute LP with Gibson 57 Classic Pickups and it's a great guitar. But this Gibson feels, plays and sounds like a whole other level.

Pure Golden Joy
After years of playing solidly good guitars I finally decided to take the plunge and get a real Gibson Les Paul. Decided to go all in and get the P90s too. The sound is great coupled with my new amp (finally got a tube amp as well). The tone is unreal; I used to get in arguments with the other guitarist in my band about my tone with cheaper guitars. They did sound pretty good, but after getting this beauty I can say it does sound better. Just enough to be noticeable.

The only downside is that this guitar feels significantly heavier than the other guitars I own. It's a small price to pay for how good it sounds…but I also felt I needed to get a wider strap and Schaller strap locks to feel comfortable with the weight and confident I wasn't gonna drop it cuz of strap coming off (which almost happened the first show I played with it as the strap locks hadn't arrived yet).

It's much pricier than the other guitars I own, but it sounds so good it's worth it.

Awesome guitar! P90s are so versatile
Set up came almost perfect from factory. Great guitar overall and super versatile when you needed. Buy it! This is my best Gibson out of my 13 guitar collection. (Including SGs, 60s, Firebird)
Perfect
It's everything I wanted in a Les Paul.
Music background: Try to entertain my wife

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery.
