Stop Sibilance with This Must-have Plug-in

At Sweetwater, sibilance is a bad word. Even if you deploy the best mics, preamps, and converters, your recordings can be afflicted with this irksome scourge, which is often exacerbated in post production. Luckily, we have an excellent De-esser plug-in at our disposal: FabFilter Pro-DS. Rocking the super-intelligent "Single Vocal" detection algorithm, Pro-DS accurately nails sibilance in vocal recordings and attenuates it transparently. "Allround" mode is also a great tool that gives you high-frequency limiting of any material, even drums or complete mixes.

User-friendly interface, and more

FabFilter Pro-DS gives you everything you need to get the best possible results, and it's all instantly available to you in a streamlined, user-friendly interface. Wide-band or linear-phase split-band processing, switchable look-ahead of up to 15ms, adjustable stereo linking with optional mid-only or side-only processing, up to four times linear-phase oversampling - you've got it all. Naturally, you also get all the usual FabFilter extras, including precision-tuned controls, MIDI Learn, Smart Parameter Interpolation for smooth parameter transitions, and more. More than just a One Trick Pony...

Ok, first off, ALL of the FabFilter plug-ins I own or have demoed work EXTREMELY well. But their Pro-DS is a little special. If you need a de-esser, (and who doesn't), that is simple to use and does a FANTASTIC job talking out just as much sibilance as YOU decide to have it take out, this is the one. You can solo up the frequencies which are going to be reduced, then you can solo up what is being taken out. This plug-in gives you so much control over the level of sibilance in your vocal tracks that you can take out exactly what you want to so they sound great and ALSO sound very natural. You can work with a "final mix" or an individual track and get great results either way. But, if that was ALL that it did, it would not be all that different from other plug-ins. The real POWER of this plug-in lies in the frequency range select and the audition, (solo), button. The FabFilter Pro-DS is, (secretly), an adjustable frequency range dynamics compressor. So, you can use it to "tame" other things, not just sibilance. I had a mix I was working on were the overhead tracks on the drum kit sounded great on quieter parts of the song, but when the drummer got cranked up during the choruses they were just too harsh. I put them on a stereo bus and slapped the Pro-DS on the bus. When I auditioned the frequencies I quickly found the range of frequencies that were too bright and dialed them down just the right amount. During the quieter parts, the Pro-DS left the cymbals alone, but it dialed them down just enough during the choruses to keep the mix pumped without becoming too much. I used the same trick on the lead singers vocal. His voice sounded clean and clear during the quiet parts of the song, but during the punchier parts his voice got so strong that I had a little too much 3k. The Pro-DS smoothed out his vocal so nicely it makes me wish I could use this plug-in for live shows. Seriously, it worked that well on his vocal track. I find myself using this to "smooth out" all kinds of things, (especially vocals and acoustic guitars), that sound great in one part of a song but go a little overboard in other parts of the song. Using an equalizer would "tame" the louder parts but would adversely effect the quieter parts, but using the Pro-DS allows you to tame the loud parts while leaving the soft ones alone. So, if you need a good de-esser, find any one of them on the Sweetwater Website that has good reviews, buy it and put it to work. But, if you are looking for a de-esser that was so well thought out when it was designed that you will be able to use it to do more than simple de-essing, consider this one, you won't be disappointed. Btw, I didn't even mention the mid/side only processing, and several other cool features. You'll just have to learn about those on your own..!
