The Evolution Series: Affordable Performance Mics!

The e604 from Sennheiser is a high-SPL handling (more than 160dB) cardioid microphone, optimized for use on drum sets and other percussion miking applications. The e604 microphone actually comes with an integrated, pivoting mount that can screw directly onto mic stands or attach to the rim of a drum, making setup very efficient. A balanced, clear, low-distortion signal from the e604 is similar to a high-end studio condenser microphone. A lightweight voice coil provides extended high frequency and rapid transient response. This quality drum mic is housed in a tough, reinforced glass fiber body designed to suppress impact noise. If you're looking to mic your toms or snare, the e604 is a dynamic mic ready for the job!

Sennheiser e604 Microphone Features:
  • Amazing SPL handling. In Excess of 160dB SPL
  • Outstanding Feedback Rejection
  • Adavanced Shock Mount reduces handling noise
  • Rugged construction
  • Drum Clip included
  • 10-year factory warranty
The e604 gives you a great, rugged mic for your drums!

It's a great Percussion Mic, too!

Just to add to the conversation with something different-- I absolutely love the sound I get from these mics on hand percussion. I use these guys on bongos, congas, djembe, front of a cajon... Picks up the nuisances of the percussionist very well in live performances without feedback issues. The tone is clear, snappy without being harsh, yet gets the mid-range tones with good presence so that the earthy tones of hand percussion comes through the mix. Embarrassing True Story: One of these little guys snuck into my laundry once, and survived the washing machine! I was sure I had killed one of my favorite mics, but after giving it a couple days to be sure it dried out, I plugged it up and it worked fine. Under critical listening, it did sound a bit different after soap and water, but not enough to bother with. Once back in the rotation, I never could tell from FOH which of those three e604s took the plunge. Bought them originally for an alternate sound on drums (we also have Audix DP7 kit, and BeyerDynamic TG Drum Set Pro XL, plus add ins like a self made speaker mic, a Sennheiser e602, and Shure SM57). There's no 'best' they are all just different. I switch them up depending on the drummer and the type of set. On toms they're a good midline between the punchiness of the Audix d2 / d4 and the clean D58c. For snare, it's really the snare-- we have a few snare drums that roll through the rotation, and I vary the SM57, 5i, D58c, and e604 depending... Okay, actually, I use the D58c on the bottom of a snare, and vary the other three on the top. Certainly give them a try and see if they fit the sound you're going for.
