Recording in Havana Cuba

I bought this the day before leaving for a week in Havana Cuba with Tommy Emmanuel, Frank Vignola, Vinny Raniolo and Pancho Amat... It worked flawlessly right out of the box... It is as easy to use or as complicated as you want to make it with the deep menu settings... I put a 128GB chip in it and that gave me 2000 hours of 192k MP3 recording time... Battery life is incredible and it takes AA's so you can pack extras without having to charge via USB. My recordings sound great!

Excellent recorder

Excellent frequency response 20Hz to 20KHz, (and slightly more,) with clean reproduction, no discernible harmonics. I have recorded the my church, (wind, tracker,) organ and the choir using the built in mikes and the sound is clean and a very 'real' sound. Lots of great features. 2xXLR inputs with phantom power means I can use this for studio recordings. Remote control via wi-fi means I can monitor and adjust the recorder from my ipad without walking around the stage and distracting the performers or audience. Straightforward, 1 step file transfer to a PC is a plus. Batteries last for hours or you can power from the USB cable. The only bad news is the users manual. Typical Tascam, it gives you the name of the controls and what they do but no examples of how to use them. I found their explanation of 2 track and 4 track recording particularly confusing. It takes some trial and error to find how everything works. Other than the users manual, this is a great recorder.

Tascam DR-44W

I have used the Tascam DR-44W for recording both inline from a sound mixer and the onboard mics for a live event that we mixed for a ten piece band. Both recordings had excellent sound reproduction. The live event was recorded with the on board mics from a distance of about 100 feet out from the stage through a packed dance floor. On play back, we were able to here all the parts of the band. The instruments it picked up were three vocals, electric bass, electric guitar, keys, trumpet, sax and trombone. The lows from the bass and kick as well as the snare were impresive as they many times are hard to get from a live recording 100 feet out. For its size, the quality of sound is as good as our Tascam 10" reel to reel studio machine.

Sweet Solid Performer

I've been working with the portable recorders for as long as they have been available...my first love was a Sony Recording Walkman Professional Cassette recorder and I was hooked...from there on out it's been just getting better and better....Now I have worked in recording studios, sound companies, and been a musician forever and when I got my first card based storage device I pretty much lived with it until I spilt a glass of water on it and then I was lost...that was a DR-05 and I wrote a couple hundred tunes on that unit. I have a DR-40 as well that I really liked until the DR44WL arrived. The undated looks of the 44WL are nice, one minor problem is the buttons on this unit are small compared to the 40 and my fingers are not this thinnest, but after using it for over two months now it works fine, just took some getting used to. Next and the biggest thing as far as I am concerned is the immediate realization that this machine sounds GOOD!....I mean really good....I loved the sound of the other two Tascam units but this one blows them away, you always get a great recording ( I haved used the built in mics, mixed down and mastered to this unit, used the XLR inputs feeding two Bluebirds requiring phantom power and have been amazed my the musicality of the 44, add to that the multi tracking capabilities, Wi-Fi, wireless remote control...and you have got yourself a great and very versatile performer that can go anywhere with you and record great sounding music....and have it hold up when you upload to other sources.... make sure you go to the Tascam website and perform the upgrades to the firmware when you get the unit, it's easy and has fixed some minor problems (mainly assoc. with the Wi-Fi and remote performance). Other than that get one of these puppies, you won't be sorry. Sweetwater you guys rock! Great service, fast delivery, and follow-up to see how I liked the unit.....all standard from these guys! Thanks!
