Great PC USB Interface for Recording LPs

I record albums as a hobby and for a small in-home business and getting the best recording has always been my goal. I bought a sound card that was supposed to record using ASIO, but it didn’t work as advertised I looked for something better (sound card does sound great and is much better than the one I replaced!). After much research I learned about the Novation Audiohub and bought it to try out. I found I wasn’t able to adjust the recording input signal since my existing preamp had no adjustable gain to change the recording level. I don’t fault Novation for this since I’m using it differently than musicians would, but an adjustable gain knob would have been a great feature rather than a LOW or HIGH gain. At LOW gain it was recording at -6dB, but was clean and clear and had to be amplified. Recording at the HIGH gain caused clipping, which wasn’t usable. This is not the correct way to record so I bought a new preamp (ART DJ PRE II - a different review) and it made a perfect match! Now I record with a -2dB to -3dB headway. My recordings are now very clean, clear, and with a great dynamic sound! I probably could have found a different interface, but possibly buying different cables to adapt didn’t look appealing. If you are recording albums for digitizing then this is a perfect match of the Audiohub and ART preamp that just blows everything away. My recording days of through a sound card are over!

A Unique, But Very Flexible Audio Interface

The Audiohub 2x4 was designed for gigging EDM musicians and DJs, but its secret is that it also makes for a terrific interface and DAC for home studios. It may not be for everyone, but it met my needs perfectly. This box has helped me solve the issue of patching in & controlling the synths and effect apps running on my iPad, along with interfacing keyboard & pad MIDI controllers, then successfully feeding that whole stew of data & signals to my DAW. Teamed with (inexpensive) utility apps like Midimux, Audiomux and Audiobus, the Audiohub 2x4 can make Macs, MIDI controllers and iPads/iPhones all play nice together. Thanks to this Novation box, my studio rig is now more compact, but way more powerful. General Observations: 1) GOOD: The pre amp is advertised as "Loud" by Novation, but they should also mention it is very quiet and clean. 2) GOOD: The headphone amp is one of the best I have ever used. 3) GOOD: Yes, there is direct monitoring. 4) GOOD: I really appreciate the gaudy, neon green USB cable - it won't become a "stranger in the night". 5) BAD: This has and needs a wall wart to function properly, but the wart & its cable are pretty cheaply made. 6) BAD: There are no dedicated (XLR and/or 1/4') microphone/instrument inputs or preamps. 7) GOOD/BAD: There is a clean & adjustable line-level input (good), but it uses only RCA inputs (bad). 8) GOOD: Other than the wall wart, the build quality of this box is very solid and should be able to support the rigors of steady gigging. 9) GOOD: The Audiohub's preamp can drive two sets of monitors, each with independent volume controls. 10) GOOD: This box has the capability to support (old school) outboard effects.
