There Are Those Who Love Apollo, and Those Who Haven't Tried It Yet

Universal Audio's Apollo Twin MkII improves on the acclaimed Apollo Twin with next-generation AD/DA converters for astonishingly wide dynamic range and ultra-low THD. And with expanded monitoring controls, the Apollo Twin MkII packs console functionality into a desktop interface for Mac and PC. Built-in UAD processing lets you take advantage of the rich, warm, analog sound of UAD Powered Plug-ins during mixdown — and even in real time during tracking. Speaking of tracking, the Apollo Twin's astounding Unison mic preamp technology lets you re-create the sound of classic mic preamps in a way that software processing simply can't match.

Capture the Sound of Legendary Preamps with Unison Technology

The Apollo Twin MkII's Unison preamp technology goes so far beyond traditional software modeling and emulations that it's really in a category all its own. In essence, Unison is a bi-directional communication between the Apollo Twin's mic preamp and a Unison-capable plug-in, such as the included 610-B plug-in that re-creates the sound of UA's classic LA-610 preamp.

The plug-in actually adjusts the preamp circuit itself, including parameters such as impedance, analog gain structure, and much more. When you adjust the Apollo Twin MkII's preamp gain knob and physical controls, the plug-in adjusts the preamp's behavior to match the target preamp. So you're not simply filtering your audio to approximate the character of a famous preamp — your microphone is now interacting with the Apollo Twin MkII's input the same way it would behave with the "modeled" preamplifier.

UAD plug-ins astounded the recording world with their incredible ability to sound like analog processors, eliminating the need for large racks of gear in the studio. Unison preamp technology will do the same thing for your mic inputs, eliminating the need to collect and maintain expensive hardware preamps just for sonic variety.

Sensational Plug-in Bundle Included!

UAD Powered Plug-ins have earned their reputation for being some of the most accurate emulations of analog audio equipment ever created. The astonishing processing power of the UAD platform is what makes these plug-ins sound so great. You simply can't get the depth, color, and character these plug-ins have without devoting huge CPU resources to them. Best of all, Apollo Twin MkII lets you record your audio through UAD plug-ins in real time with sub-2ms latency. You'll receive the Realtime Analog Classics bundle, which includes:

  • UA 610-B Tube Preamp & EQ
  • UA 1176LN Limiting Amplifier (Legacy)
  • UA 1176SE Limiting Amplifier (Legacy)
  • Pultec EQP-1A EQ (Legacy)
  • Pultec Pro EQ (Legacy)
  • Teletronix LA-2A Leveling Amplifier (Legacy)
  • Raw Distortion

Thunderbolt: Ultra-low Latency and Unrivaled Bandwidth

Thunderbolt is one of the most important technologies to impact audio production in years, and UA was one of the first to adopt it. Thanks to its blazing-fast connectivity, Thunderbolt offers lower latency and greater stability than USB or FireWire, clocking in with the speed and ultra-fast performance of a PCI Express system — but with the convenience of a single cable. Apollo Twin MkII's Thunderbolt connection lets you run projects with high track counts at incredibly low latency. In fact, you can even record through UAD plug-ins in real time with less than 2ms latency!

UAD-2 Processing Power Built In!

There are times when your computer just doesn't have the power and speed to run all the plug-ins your recording session needs. With UAD Powered Plug-ins, the processing load is taken off your computer and borne by UAD's super-powerful Analog Devices SHARC processors. Universal Audio's Apollo Twin MkII interface has these SHARC processors built in and is available in SOLO (one SHARC), DUO (two SHARCs), and QUAD (four SHARCs) configurations.

Digitally Controlled Outputs and Advanced Monitor Controls

Many audio interfaces have a volume control that reduces digital bit depth as you lower the volume — so unless you're listening at the maximum volume level, you're not really hearing your mix as you should be. The Apollo Twin MkII is equipped with digitally controlled analog monitor outputs, where your audio passes through at its full resolution and is attenuated in the analog realm. Even at low volume levels, the Apollo Twin MkII lets you accurately determine if your mix has the punch, impact, and detail that it needs. Handy controls for Mute, Dim, Mono, and Alt speaker switching offer console-like control over your monitoring experience. And to top it all off, a built-in talkback mic provides easy studio communication.

Smart I/O Selection for a Desktop Interface

For smaller studios and mobile producers, the Apollo Twin MkII zeros in on what you need for productive sessions. You've got a pair of Unison mic/line inputs with Burr-Brown PGA2500 preamps, which sound detailed and transparent. If you need more inputs, an optical input lets you add up to eight more via ADAT. Four analog outputs and a high-quality headphone output give you enough outputs for most small tracking sessions.

It's just the right setup for producers on the go, for engineers who need to mix with powerful UAD plug-ins outside of their studio, and even for DJs who want the best possible live sound they can get. If you're not sure how you would integrate the Apollo Twin MkII into your existing setup, just give your Sweetwater Sales Engineer a call!

Bridging the Gap Between Your UAD-equipped Studio and Everywhere Else

If you mix with UAD plug-ins in your studio, but also like to record and mix outside your studio, the Apollo Twin MkII is the missing link you've been waiting for. With just your laptop and the Apollo Twin MkII, you can easily take powerful UAD processing anywhere you go.

And the live sound possibilities are awesome: use the Apollo Twin MkII as a real-time processor for your bass or guitar, and take your studio sound onstage. If you're an electronic music producer that also DJs, using the Apollo Twin MkII as your live performance interface will give you huge, detailed sound that will make other DJs jealous.

So while the Apollo Twin MkII is a great entry point for new UAD users, it's also the perfect way to take your existing UAD-powered projects on the road.

Cascade Up to 4 Apollo Interfaces

Thanks to the combined power and flexibility of Thunderbolt connectivity and UA Console 2.0 management software, it’s incredibly easy to combine up to four Apollo interfaces (plus two additional Satellites) into a single powerhouse production system. Cascaded Apollos share DSP and I/O, and you can easily manage it all via a single Console window.

Apollo TWIN mkii QUAD...The Real Deal!

I have owned many interfaces/recording devices/tape machines over the 30+ years I've been writing, recording, and performing. Even before I owned a Universal Audio device, I recommended the Twin Duo mki to a writing partner in Nashville, and he's still raving about it. When it was time for me to upgrade, I briefly considered the Antelope Zen Tour, but decided to buy the Apollo TWIN QUAD mkii (Thunderbolt) and invest in the UA ecosystem. I'm glad I did! I'm sure the Zen Tour is a great product, but the preamps, plugins, and conversion on the Apollo Twin Quad mkii are all top notch. After my purchase, I demoed several plugins. I bought three addtional plugs (via discounted bundle), and MAN they make a difference! I purchased the NEVE 88RS Channel Strip/Preamp, Studer A800 tape sim, and Ocean Way Studios room plugin. There are folks who say there is no difference between native plugins and the UA plugs. There are also those who claim they don't use emulations of vintage gear. That's fine for them. There is no one-size-fits-all with art and artistic endeavors. However, I hear a difference between the popular native plugins (I have several, representing most brands) and the UA stuff. With some plugs the difference is subtle, with others the difference is more obvious. Bottom line...my mixes have taken a giant leap. I record live drums, bass, guitars, keys, perc...standard stuff...and the preamp/conversion/plugin quality is well above what I've been using. The NEVE RS88 plugin is a joy to use! The point is that I just didn't purchase an interface; I bought into expandability. Using the preamps with Unison technology...tracking through UA's hardware emulations is a game-changer for me. At some point in the future, I may invest in a 500 series lunch box, but honestly, there may never be a need. The vocal sound I'm getting with my Neumann TLM-103 (which has been a great workhorse mic) can best be described as SILK. Just the NEVE pre and a little compression...no EQ accept high pass. INCREDIBLE! The TWIN mkii is built like a tank with solid drivers (I use a MAC). The CONSOLE software laid out well and is very intuitive. The overall sound of the hardware is tight, clean, and revealing. The legacy plugins and the few newer ones that are bundled with the hardware are all great-sounding and very useful. You can go with just those, if you want. I opted for 3 more plugins that I thought would make the biggest difference for me, and those will do for quite some time. There are a lot of great interfaces out there, no doubt. But this one fits my needs perfectly AND gives me hardware expansion options for adding other Unison-enabled devices in the future. If you go with the Apollo Twin Quad mkii, I'd be surprised if you're not VERY HAPPY with it.

The Best Studio Investment

I previously owned the Apollo Twin Solo and instantly fell in love with all the UAD plug-ins. To me UAD makes the best plug-ins and audio interface on the market. Upgrading to the Apollo Twin MKII Quad was like turning my computer into a UAD power house. It can handle so much stress from the most DSP consuming plugins like the master plugin and still have enough power left over for more instances. UAD is my go to now for there super reliable and high quality products. I am an independent artist/producer/mixing engineer and this product is truly one of the best things I have purchased for my own projects and other people's project. I would strongly recommend this product to anyone and everyone,

Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII QUAD - Fantastic

This is an absolutely fantastic Audio Interface. Fidelity is excellent. Works exactly as advertised if not better. The only criticism that I would have has nothing to do with performance. The only criticism I have is that it gets a bit warm. Other than that.....perfect.

Duuuuuude!

Dopest interface on the market. I am seriously blown away! Clarity and depth is steps above other desktop interfaces I've used. So glad I made the step up to UAD. I was sceptical for quite some time, but can truley say the technology (plugin quality, unison technology, and zero latency monitoring) is crazy! Things to know: If your using windows you may need to make some changes in you BIOS as I did. You will need to disable your security at startup so windows will except the UAD drivers (something with the driver signature). The other thing I think could use some change is the size of the UI on the plugins. It is tough using my 14" Razer Blade, however, not impossible. With that said I am still super stoked! And.. I am picky when it comes to quality and latency. I actually sold my lunchbox and outboard gear (BAE 1073, Wa2a, WA76, 560 A's, Neve 517) because I am that impressed with UAD.

Great

Great sound & build. New built in talkback helped me out ( got rid of monitoring gear I didn't need anymore.) Avid hardware represents the past, UA is the future.

Sweetwater Advice

Universal Audio Apollo Twin MKII

You don't need to purchase additional plug-ins to make good use of the Apollo Twin MKII. You might simply use its gorgeous mic preamps and A/D/A convertors to route audio to and from your DAW, relying on plug-ins you already own. Still, most Apollo users wind up purchasing additional software. I certainly did! I seldom fumble through a mix without my two favorites: Ampex ATR-102, a 2-track mastering deck simulation that makes everything bigger and warmer, and EMT 140, a drop-dead replica of the sweetest plate reverb ever....
