Get to know them!

The Dingwall Guitars Amos Williams Signature Combustion takes the popular multi-scale Combustion electric bass and ratchets 4-string sonic performance to the next level with customized specs for the TesseracT bass player. Meticulously crafted with top-shelf tonewoods, the Amos Williams Signature Combustion provides the pitch accuracy and ergonomic advantages of fanned frets combined with a supremely comfortable, sleekly contoured body, premium FD3n neodymium pickups, an EMG B30EQ preamp, and a comprehensive control set for world-class performance with the tonal flexibility you need to ace any live gig or recording session. Designed to facilitate the execution of demanding technical passages, and only available in extremely limited quantities, the Dingwall Guitars Amos Williams Signature Combustion offers the superior ergonomics, playability, and sound that professional touring and studio bassists demand.

Massive sonic payload with EMG tone-shaping

Dingwall Guitars loaded the Amos Williams Signature Combustion with top-drawer electronics that pack a mighty punch. A power trio of FD3n neodymium pickups delivers a massive payload characterized by a huge, fat bottom end and high-end sparkle, offering the transparency that many other bass pickups lack. Of course, having access to three of these beasts feeding the onboard EMG B30EQ 3-band preamp and a powerful control set gives you tremendous tonal versatility to accommodate the music at hand. Still, it’s the inherent high fidelity of this setup that makes the instrument particularly adept at plowing through busy arrangements and dense mixes, all while retaining clarity and definition. This signal integrity allows the Amos Williams Signature Combustion to drive long cable runs and complex signal chains without a hint of noise. Onstage and in the studio, the Amos Williams Signature Combustion’s premium electronics help you ace the gig.

Unlimited tonal control

The Amos Williams Signature Combustion boasts a compact, ergonomic, and lightweight body design inspired by Dingwall's Custom Shop Afterburner model. The body, which balances perfectly with the instrument’s bolt-on 5-piece maple neck for a supremely comfortable playing experience, is accented by a cool pickguard design that visually separates the passive and active controls. The custom control layout is one of the most flexible that we’ve seen here at Sweetwater. Conveniently located near the pickups is a Master Volume pot, a 4-way rotary pickup selector, a 3-band EQ, and an Active/Passive toggle switch that bypasses the EQ section completely.

The well-tempered bass

On multi-scale instruments such as pianos, harps, or fanned-fret guitars, each string has its own individual scale length. The lower the string’s pitch, the longer it is — this is in keeping with the laws of physics, because lower frequencies generate longer wavelengths. The advantage of a multi-scale bass is that the tension of each string is optimized for its pitch, so you have an evenness of feel across all registers. This well-tempered characteristic not only improves playability and tone — it provides superior ergonomics in that the frets fan out in a way corresponding to the shape of your hand and the reach of your fingers. If you’ve never played a bass with fanned frets before, you’ll soon discover it’s nothing short of a revelation.

Tight, responsive low register

The Amos Williams Signature Combustion 4-string has a multi-scale length of 34–37 inches, tuned BEAD. With a longer scale, harmonics become more in tune with the fundamental. The alignment of overtones with the fundamental results in pristine clarity over a wide frequency range, which Dingwall’s electronics are designed to capture in all its sonic glory. And because the longer scale length holds the low B string at a higher tension, your lowest notes will have more punch, impact, and note definition. If you’ve played many standard-scale (34-inch) bass guitars, you’ll undoubtedly have noted that the lowest strings can feel and sound quite “flubby”. But with the Dingwall Combustion Nashville Edition, your tone will stay tight, focused, and pronounced when you’re grooving down low in the meat and potatoes range.

Premium hardware and strings

Dingwall understands that exceptional bass design demands equally outstanding hardware. In other words, every detail matters. Thus, the company outfits each Combustion bass with a full complement of premium Dingwall and Hipshot hardware. The Dingwall bridge is fully adjustable, allowing you to set the string height and the intonation of each string individually. Dingwall uses lightweight aircraft aluminum for the saddles and stainless steel for the riser screws. This setup allows for maximum energy transfer to the instrument’s body. For the tuners, Dingwall spec’d Hotshot’s popular and highly effective Ultra-Lite tuning machines. The Combustion is strung at the factory with Dingwall custom strings. The first company to design strings specifically for multi-scale instruments, Dingwall formulates its long-scale nickel-plated and stainless steel strings to provide even tension for a smooth playing feel and balanced tone across the entire range of your instrument.

Dingwall Guitars: innovative designs for innovative players

Sheldon Dingwall’s affinity for crafting custom-built guitars dates back to working in his uncle’s workshop during his pre-adolescent years. By age 19, he had formed a record company, after which he toured with his own band. Returning to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1987, he founded Dingwall Guitars with a specific purpose: design and build the most versatile instruments the industry has ever seen. Among the company’s revered achievements are its exquisite electric bass guitars, which are replete with Novax’s Fanned-Fret system, proprietary pickups, innovative electronics, and tailor-made hardware. Appropriately, Dingwall’s artist roster comprises a succession of acclaimed bassists across a gamut of genres, including John Taylor, Leland Sklar, Adam “Nolly” Getgood, Jacob Umansky, Stefan Lessard, Tony Levin, Pete Griffin, Mason Nagy, and Jean-Michel Labadie. Here at Sweetwater, we’re confident that high-caliber players searching for a high-performance axe will find their perfect match in a Dingwall Guitars instrument.
