Operational flexibility for modern workflows
The Saramonic SG-MS1 is equipped with cardioid and figure-8 capsules that capture mid and side signals, respectively. The mic also has a built-in 5-pin XLR connector and ships with five adapter cables. A 3-mode dial lets you access virtually any pattern or combination thereof, offering operational flexibility for smooth integration into a variety of modern workflows. Raw M-S mode captures unprocessed audio using both capsules, giving you maximum flexibility for optimized processing of stereo soundstaging, ambience, music, and sound effects. M-S Mono mode uses both XLR outputs independently: the M-XLR outputs the cardioid capsule, perfect for dialogue and directional recording, and the S-XLR outputs the figure-8 pattern, perfect for 2-person interviews. Finally, Decoded L/R mode converts Mid-Side audio into conventional L/R stereo channels in real time — ideal for instant capture of a stereo image.
A complete system
At Sweetwater, we’ve had a blast exploring all the possibilities presented by the Saramonic SG-MS1. This is one well-thought-out system! In addition to its cardioid and figure-8 capsules and 3-way mode selector, the mic comes with five adapter cables that are key to accessing all this mic has to offer. A 5-pin XLRF to dual 3-pin XLRM adapter cable connects to the built-in 5-pin XLR port. Also included are a USB-C charging and digital output cable and a USB-C to Lightning output cable that connect to the USB-C port on the side of the microphone for output to smartphones and tablets. Next to the USB-C port is a 3.5mm TRS port that accommodates the included 3.5mm TRS and TRRS coiled output cables for connecting to cameras or portable recorders. The 3.5mm port doubles as a headphone jack for real-time monitoring while recording to mobile devices via USB-C.
Universal mounting options
The SG-MS1 also includes universal mounting options for cameras, cages, boom poles, pistol grips, microphone stands, and more: a Rycote Lyre shockmount with an integrated cold-shoe mount and a 5/8-inch stand mount adapter with 3/8-inch and 1/4-20 threads. Lastly, the included foam pop filter and furry windscreen are highly effective for eliminating wind noise in high-wind conditions on exterior shoots.
