Fly High with the Mandobird!

Epiphone throws it back to the past with the Mandobird solidbody electric mandolin. Electric mandolins first found favor with Western swing musicians in the ’40s and ’50s, and the Epiphone Mandobird continues its legacy in the modern age. With a recognizable Firebird body shape at the size of a mandolin, the Mandobird bridges the gap from rock to bluegrass with plenty of spunk to spare for other genres, too. The Mandobird sports a nato body, mahogany neck, and laurel fingerboard that are ready to rock. Players can take a spin with a fully electric, solidbody mandolin that sports a powerful Firebird pickup accompanied by volume and tone knobs. Whether you’re a mandolin player, guitarist looking to branch out, or first-time instrument buyer, the Mandobird is a phenomenal bet for musical enjoyment!

Plentiful possibilities

Why choose a solidbody electric mandolin? For starters, there are limitless possibilities! The Mandobird is a superb way to test out new tones; plug the Mandobird into your favorite effects pedal or pedalboard and enjoy crafting your sound. Also, the size of the Mandobird makes it well suited to life on the road. Plug it into a headphone amp, and you’ve got a mini mobile rig that’s ready at a moment’s notice. Far from a one-trick pony, the Mandobird can go from rockin’ riffs to western swing to old-time bluegrass and beyond!

Outfitted for modern players

The Mandobird will serve you well for quick jams or onstage performances thanks to its quality construction. Its nato body has been sculpted into a miniature Firebird shape, making for one of the coolest mandolines we’ve ever seen here at Sweetwater. Meanwhile, its mahogany neck offers up a comfortable "C"-shaped profile, and its laurel fingerboard provides a 12-inch fingerboard radius that’s easy for any player to get behind. The Mandobird features a 13.78-inch scale length, chrome hardware, and a gloss neck. Other features like a string-through body, bolt-on neck, and mini Grover Rotomatic tuners keep tuning rock solid when jamming rhythmic passages or stepping out for a solo.

Epiphone Mandobird Solidbody Electric Mandolin Features:

  • A fully electric solidbody mandolin
  • Firebird body shape with passive Firebird pickup and volume and tone knobs
  • Nato body with a mahogany neck and laurel fingerboard
  • Excellent for bluegrass, rock, western swing, and more

Reviews

Sweet tone
I have a couple other electric mandolins, but was still looking since the tone can be harsh. I did some listening on YT and this one sounded a little richer and fatter than the others. I received my Mandobird today and after some tweaks I'm getting the expressive, luscious tone I've been seeking. This is a nice lead voice. Not only that, it's very comfortable in your lap. The shape has a cutout for your leg and the front part puts the neck in the perfect position for playing. They've spaced the strings a full 8mm apart, as opposed to 7mm for other brands. This lets me cleanly finger chords with open strings in them, plenty of room to allow them to ring. The supplied strings are heavy, I measured them at 12, 16, 28, and 42, which is like playing a guitar with 13's on it. I think that adds to the tone, most electric mandolins will have 10's. So, good ergomonics and good tone, for a good price, I'm very happy.

This is a testament to Five Star Customer Service
Back in January I purchased this instrument and I wrote a review on 1-31-25 . After having it for a bit, I noticed a problem with the high E string, turns out the tailpiece was not centered so the E string was off the fretboard when you went up the neck past the seventh fret and couldn't be played above that spot, so I called my rep Brian Rutan and told him the problem, so he immediately gets the ball rolling and puts me in touch with Hunter in the repair/ set up shop, I told him that I had photos of the instrument showing the problem, but Hunter said that He could see in the photo they had of the Mandobird in their records that indeed there was a problem with the tailpiece and e mailed me a return label for UPS and shipped out a brand new one which arrived via overnight air. Brian Rutan and Hunter provided the Legendary Five Star Customer Service that Sweetwater is known for!!! This is why I will be a lifelong customer of this company!! Thank You Guys for keeping the Standards higher than I could ever have expected!!

My first electric instrument
Lots of fun. Would buy it again. Won't replace my acoustic, but it is a great thing to add to the toolbox.

Besides being the coolest looking four string Mandolin I've ever seen, it plays well ! It's well made!! And it sounds really good too!! I'm LOVING it!!! Comes with a nice gig bag and the Firebird pickup is just the icing on the cake! The Mandobird from a few years back had a different pickup but we're just as cool and playable!!! Glad I was able to get this one, and yep, I'll be gigging with it !!! Thanks again to Brian Rutan for the help in acquiring this fun to play little jewel! And for the Five Star Customer Service that Sweetwater is known for. And to the Folks at Epiphone, who have stepped up to the plate a few years ago and have been making really Good Gear! Stay at it Folks.
