Powerful Compressor with a Massive Feature Set

Unlike many popular compressor plug-ins on the market, the SSL X-Comp doesn’t emulate a specific piece of hardware. Instead, it takes full advantage of digital processing to produce numerous classic and modern compressor types. With world-class audio fidelity and extensive functionality, the X-Comp can pull delicate dynamic control for mastering applications or smashed, brickwall-style limiting to inject energy and aggression into any mix. Try it on overheads for mammoth drums or on your lead singer for in-your-face modern vocal presence. X-Comp’s robust feature set includes a dual symmetrical knee design for detailed compression shaping; advanced sidechain architecture for ducking, pumping, and de-essing; an intuitive interface with click-and-drag controls; and MIDI compatibility for real-time parameter manipulation. Engineers at Sweetwater hold SSL in high regard, particularly the dynamics processors. And the X-Comp is a welcome addition to SSL's stable of industry-leading compressors.

Reviews

Wanted to love, but high CPU usage
I purchased this, along with X-EQ2, X-Delay, X-Phase, X-Echo, and X-Gate, and really liked what I was seeing; a really clean interface and the legendary SSL name.

Unfortunately, I found (at least in Reaper on Windows) that having just three of these plugins (X-Comp, X-EQ2, and X-Delay) in a project, that they alone increased my CPU usage from 8% (125 tracks, 383 FX instances) to 28%. Yeah, 3 plugins added 20% CPU usage to the 8% that 380 instances of probably 40 other plugins were producing. Sadly, even after you deleted the FX from the project, and even after closing all projects in Reaper (empty interface, nothing loaded), CPU usage remained at 20%, the amount that SSL plugins increased the original when loaded. SSL has acknowledged to users posting on forums about this that it is a known problem that they are working to resolve. One such post was in March 2023. I can confirm that as of Feb 2024, that AT LEAST X-Comp, X-EQ2, X-Delay, and FlexVerb all still have this excessive CPU usage bug. I also found a post about similar CPU issues with SSL plugins in Cakewalk in June 2023.

From what I've tested, these are very nice plugins, or could be. I did want to share my experience with them though. YMMV.
