About Electric Guitar Strings

One of the most important things about electric guitars is, of course, the strings. Without the strings, your guitar would be little more than pieces of wood and metal.

The most important thing to pay attention to when choosing new electric guitar strings for your guitar is the string gauge. The string gauge refers to the thickness of the strings.

Type of Electric Guitar Strings

Common string gauges include medium gauge, light gauge, and super light gauge. On most of the packages, you'll notice some numbers displayed that point out the gauge, such as 9's (super lights: 0.009 inches), 10's (lights: 0.010 inches), and 11's (mediums: 0.011 inches). These numbers refer to the thickness of the high E string, which is the thinnest string of the set. We also carry lighter and heavier gauges, which are less popular, but those of you shopping for them know the magic they can do for your guitar.

Remember that with thicker strings comes more tension (and more sound). That being said, the high tension (medium and heavy gauges) of the electric guitar strings will benefit you rock and metal players out there who are tuning down your guitars to drop D or even drop C. You need that extra thickness and tension, but with enough accessibility to let you rock the solos where your legato runs and bends show up. Thicker electric guitar strings are also great for tuning stability, short scale guitars, and anyone who's a rhythm player.

Thinner electric guitar strings, on the other hand, work best for guitarists who love to bend, lead, or play fast. They're also better for guitars with long scale length. Light gauge strings require less pressure, so they're often recommended for beginners.

We also carry light top, heavy bottom electric guitar string sets. In these sets, the highest three strings are a light gauge and the lowest three are a heavy gauge. Check these out if you're a rock or metal player who often uses the lowest strings for power chords, rhythmic stuff, since you'll want that tuning stability there. At the same time, the highest three strings will aid your fast, bendy leads.

Got a 7-string or 8-string guitar? Grab our extended-scale electric guitar strings.

For the bluesy and jazzy electric guitar players out there, we carry flatwound strings. These have a flat and smooth wiring around the core, giving you a nice sound for those awesome jazz slides.

Finally, think about whether you want a protective coating for your electric guitar strings. Coated strings have some wrapping around them, while treated ones feel just like normal strings, but are treated with some special substances. Both coated and treated strings are protected from corrosion, humidity, sweat, and they tend to last a bit longer than normal strings.
