Why I choose D’Addario strings.

By Sweetwater Customer

I know there are many brands of guitar strings and I'm sure some of these are just fine. For me the quality and consistency of D'Addario strings makes them my go to choice.

D'Addario Strings

By Chip S. from Roseburg, OR
Music Background: 50 + years Professional

I have used the D'Addario XL Nickel Woumd EXL120-10P strings on my electric guitars for over 25 years for both professional playing and just jamming with my friends. They are easy on the fingers when you have to play long sets yet they produce the sound you need. If you play hard on your strings you may want something a little heavier, but for all around playing they're great.

Like an old friend

By Allen from Cadillac michigan
Music Background: Fender Gold level tech and musician

I recently bought a 7-string guitar at Sweetwater that came with Ernie Ball slinky 10'-56s.
I normally play 9-54's (DAddarrio Xl). I struggled with the extra tension but decided to push through and really try. I figured my hands and fingers would strengthen and toughen up. I'll admit I started to like the gauge but noticed that with my playing still they lacked sustain and some mojo.
I replaced the EB's with DAddarrio xl 9-54s and immediately felt at home. I've been playing DAddario for 40 years and the feel and quality have not changed! It was like an old friend, even the wound strings have a feel that is unique and inspiring. Not sure why?
9's for me seem to sustain better on single notes and have a growl to them on heavy chords.
After adjusting saddle height a little and intonation. Ever so slightly this new guitar plays like a dream.
D'Addarios seem to start out bright and crisp and break in to a nice warm full tone and for me they stay like that for months!
My music style is like dream theater meets megadeth and Vai. I feel like over all I have a light touch but like to dig into the chords and do a lot of bending.
Highly recommend trying these if you haven't.

D'Addario

Old generation Metal. Not a great player or anything - Noble Hangman is my label.

I just bought a 10 pack of these.

The notes are bright, bend easy, doesn't feel like they are about to snap.

Good stuff. If I can remember the strings, I'll be buy them again.

But, you know, I probably wont.

Maybe I'll stumble across my own review.

My favorite string brand

By Michael N. from Phoenix, Az.
Music Background: Professional guitar player 50 years. All types of music, mostly country and classic rock.

I have been using D'Addario XL110 and XL120 on my electrics and 80/20 phosphor bronze light gauge on my acoustics for years. They last a long time between changes, and no problem with oxidizing. I have never tried Nashville tuning before and find it is a blast playing along side a standard acoustic. Now for the bad part. I am a little rough on my electric guitars, but I take very good care of them. The problem I have had off and on is the e first string tends to unwind from the ball end in the middle of a song. I don't use the whammy bar intensely, mostly just surf type bends. Sometimes they come loose when putting on new. However, I still stand by them as great sound and generally last a long time.

Better strings for the money

By Denny from Louisville
Music Background: Semi-pro local and regional only

I switched to D'Addario strings for my electric guitar collection when I happened to purchase some sets direct from the company a couple of years ago.
Now, l've used D'Addario acoustic strings on my acoustic-electrics for some time now as I felt they stayed crisp and clear longer than most other Acoustic strings. But never used their electric strings until a couple of years ago. When my other brand raised their prices and are now the same price as D'Addario strings, it was a no-brained. I've been very happy with them as they seem to last a bit longer than the other brands.
They stay crystal clear and sound great for longer periods in between changes. I bought the 10 pack because it cuts the price per set way down to a manageable level as I rotate 3 guitars for rehearsals and gigs. Very dependable and I've not broken any strings….. yet!

Like a pair of good, old comfortable loafers

By BJ from Desert Southwest (Nevada)
Music Background: Over 63 years as a musician; 55+ of those on guitar and bass

I've been using various gauges of D'Addario strings over the years. I prefer their lighter gauges like the .009, 0095, and .010's and let my guitars tell me which gauge sounds and plays best on it. As I've gotten older, I've had to adjust my playing style to offset some of the wear and tear brought on by ravages of time. I've switched to lighter weight instruments to alleviate back and shoulder issues and tend toward lower action fretboards to offset some of the loss of dexterity and strength in my fingers and wrists. The D'Addario EXL120's have become my "Go-To" brand and gauge of preference for the past 20 years.

IMHO, The D'Addario's string brand has always been very reliable, maintains consistency in their manufacture, holds their tone longer than other brands, and rarely fails even under my prolific string bending and the harsh environmental conditions here in the desert southwest. I recently added a B-Bender guitar to my arsenal which puts a lot more stress on the B string. I've tested the bender with several several gauges and have not had one string failure. D'Addario also offers a number of boutique strings (Electric and Acoustic) that offer increased longevity and tone quality and I plan to test them out in the near future. But for now the EXL120's fit my electric needs very well. AND, finally, Sweetwater, along with their great customer service, periodically holds a string sale that offers the D'Addario multi-pack sets at a sale price that beats all of the competition hands down. It's a win-win for me and all of the other D'Addario users out there.

Best electric guitar strings

By Sweetwater Customer

I used to break a high E string about once every month, but not once since I started using DAdario EXL120-10 strings. I have been playing a Line 6 JTV -69 for the past 5 years and these strings are ideal to get the best tone quality from a variax magnetic pickups and powered bridge pickup. Excellent tone quality and longevity. Haven't touched my Strat or my Takamine EF340 acoustic electric guitars since I purchased my JTV-69. Sound quality and playability is exceptional when combined with a set of EXL 120 - 10 strings.

Great deal on the best electric strings out there

By John from Biloxi
Music Background: Been playing 15 years

I love D'Addario strings, they seem to be more resistant to breaking and losing tone/volume. I used to play Ernie Ball Super Slinkys and I still put them on one guitar because I always have and haven't run out of my old stockpile yet. But for every other instrument I own (ukuleles, electric bass, acoustic guitars, 4 other electric guitars) I use D'Addario strings only. They feel as smooth and easy to bend as Slinkys, but I've always broken more high e's on the Ernie's so I quit buying them a while back in favor of going all D'Addarios. They have the best rewards program I've ever seen for strings too, if you create an account on their website you can enter the codes on the back of the package and get points back for every pack- so in this 10 pack of strings I got 1000 points (100 points per pack of ordinary strings, 1600 to buy 1 set with points) to use to buy more strings. In the last year I've bought 3 packs of more expensive extended life strings just with points by logging in all the old packs I bought, and the X strings give 250 points per pack so I'm close to another freebie. All in all, best strings out there to begin with- made better by low price and rewards points, the only way to go for me.

D'Addario EXL120's super light strings are a great fit for me, I often stretch an extra gig out of them when pressed for time. These strings are very consistent & dependable, I've tried the more expensive strings, these D'Addario EXL120 Nickel Wounds deliver a great/consistent tone at a great price. Very satisfied, I've been using D'Addario for 15 years & will continue to do so.

D'Addario

By Pat W. from Aurora, Colorado
Music Background: Self taught and I've been playing since 1968

I have been using your products since the 80's, I use to be an Ernie Ball guy but a friend of mine gave me a pack of D'Addario's to try and I have never ever used anything but them. Even on my acoustics. They have great tone and then stay in tune, what more could you ask for, I mean you just put the set on and do some stretching and that's all it takes and they stay in tune. I think I have only broken maybe 3 or 4 strings in all the years of use, since I started using them. The only reason they broke was because of a Burr in the string guides. So for me it's the best string out there, high quality and long life and I play every single day so I buy them a 10 pack at a time, it might be time to buy two ten packs. So, great tone, great feel, long life and price's are very reasonable. I use 9 gouge these days, I'm getting up in years and like why are you working so hard playing those Rail Road ties. Let the amp work the tone and relax your fingers. Try them, you'll like them!

D'Addario strings? No brainer!

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Playing professionally for 40+ years

I've been using these strings on my tremolo equipped guitars for as long as D'Addario has been selling them.

For the price, durability, sound, consistency of tuning, play-ability, there is no better string.

I've used strings that cost twice as much that were inferior to these strings.

The different color ball ends makes them easy to distinguish when restringing a lot of guitars at a time.

I rely on these strings to be ready to perform every time I take the stage and they have never failed me yet. I have never suffered a string failure using these strings when playing gigs in more than 20 years.

I use the .010 gauge strings on my stop tailpiece guitars, I refuse to use other strings for all the above reasons.

When it comes to guitar strings, these are a no brainer.

Best Strings on the market!

By David C. from Kentucky
Music Background: just an old guitar picker

I have a collection of electric guitars, Les Pauls, Fender Strats, Tele, Gretsch, 15 in all! So I buy strings in Bulk when I can find them on sale, that is D'Addario EXL120. These strings are the best I've found for extra light strings. I've tried several others and they just don't match up to the D'Addario quality. I also like buying from Sweetwater. Tom Koch is very knowledgeable in about anything you want to buy. Thanks Sweetwater.

D'Addario strings are always consistent. No matter how long they have been on a guitar the intonation will be right on. These strings just feel right. The resistance for bending feels just right. Every once in a while I will try another brand, even another D'Addario style, but I always come back to the EXL Nickel Wound. They just feel right.

String of choice for my PRS

By Jim P. from South central Ohio

Seems odd to think of it now, but I bought a PRS custom 10 top cherry finish in 1990. The guitar came with D'Addario strings on it, which at that time were recommended by PRS. I really don't recall using them on previous guitars I owned, but they seemed to really do a good job of staying lively through gigs and rarely broke even with a lot of string bending on solo's and fills.
Even though I had tried a few sets of old favorites, I always came back to the D'Addario's. That's why I buy the 10 packs of this gauge, which for me work nicely on my PRS's and Tele's. I like 10's and up on the Strats and Les Paul's, just a feel thing. All in all a great string that's consistent first set in the box to the last set.
By the way, I still have the 1990 PRS which has thousands of hours of live gigging on it along with the wear. It still cleans up nicely and sounds great with a fresh set of D'Addario's!

They get the job done

By Bob G. from Lafayette IN
Music Background: Professional Musician

I used to use Dean Markley's because they stay in tune great and hardly ever break. They stopped individually packing the strings and started rolling them all up together. Changing a broken string in the dark became an issue since they are not clearly marked which sting is which. These DAddario's have color coded balls on them. They are more practical in a gig situation where getting a string changed in a dim lit room is easier to differentiate which string you have in your hand.

What’s up with D’Addario

By Sweetwater Customer from Louisiana
Music Background: Professional

I have been using these strings since the 80"s!
Although I contacted the company awhile back, & they told that they have changed nothing.....they are NOT the same strings since they changed the package design a few years back.
Although the tone is still great (& that is why I still use them), but I find that they don"t have the "body" they used to have, & they go dead very quickly.
The old version strings, I use to get a week of gigs out of them in the summer, & up to 2 weeks in the winter! The newer strings, I can"t get more then 3 gigs out of them .....any time of the year??
I think they have changed something & not admitting it??? Maybe to keep prices down, but their price keeps going up! I would rather pay more for the old version of their strings!! :-(

Best Strings there are period

By Brandon H. from Paden City WV
Music Background: Session Musician lead guitarist

I have been using Daddario strings since I was turned on to them by a fellow guitarist in the band I was in. He said hey try these you won't play anything else and he was right! Haven't looked back since and it's been six years! I played fender strings on everything I owned for years but when I tried Daddario they were brighter, stayed in tune better, and just had a lot more to offer! I've played Ernie Ball, Fender, Daquisto,GHS, Gibson and many others but nothing compares or holds a candle to these! Here is an example of how these strings are I played in a band that played 3 sets a night my guitar is a Jackson DK2S with a Floyd Rose tremolo system. I tuned up at sound check, checked the guitar before we went on and never touched it the rest of the night! I couldn't knock it put of tune! Same way with my les Paul's I have a standard, and ES, and a junior no tuning issues there either! Buy a pack today and be amazed!

I just keep coming back to XLs

By Lee B. from Seattle, WA
Music Background: 30+ years, mostly hobbyist

As a guy who came of age in the 80s wanting to be Eddie Van Halen, I got a pointy Ibanez V with an Edge trem and DiMarzios, and I put Ernie Ball Super Slinkies on it because Eddie was leaping his hockey stick Kramer across the Super Slinky ads at the time. The Slinkies sounded great, but the E strings busted left and right. I tried GHS Boomers, but they didn't have the same zing I was looking for and they broke almost as fast as the Slinkies did. After a couple years of this frustration, I manned up my callouses and switched to Hybrid Slinkies, which seemed to take my Pacifica 512's licensed Floyd quite a bit longer to chew up, but weren't as bright as Super Slinkies. I discovered SIT strings around 1990 (Steve Lukather ad) which were bright, stable, and long-lasting, but they were also more expensive and hard to find - I had to drive 100 miles down I-80 to Lincoln to get them. I got into SRV around 1992 and after a brief flirtation with Fender nickel Bullets, I started rocking heavy gauge Dean Markley Blue Steels on a MIJ 60s Strat reissue. The Blue Steels were expensive and I told myself I liked their sound because being cryogenically frozen simply had to count for something, right? I also kept telling myself I liked playing on piano wires. This ongoing illusion lasted like four or five years. Incidentally, thank you, Billy Gibbons, for telling your BB King story about string gauges every chance you get.

I got my first pack of XLs (10-46) around 2002. That first set lasted my Gibson Faded V about two months, and I was playing two or three hours a night. The sound was brilliant just like Super Slinkies, but the tone lasted and lasted where the Slinkies would start fading after a couple weeks. I felt like I'd found the everlasting gobstopper of guitar strings! I could detune to D no problem, the tuning stayed true even with those green-key Klusons. Best of all, XLs were pretty much the same price as Slinkies, and everyplace stocked them. Where had these fantastic strings been all my life, I wondered. I sprang for a Jackson Soloist in 2010. This got me all posh-minded; I started buying 9-42 DR Hi-Beams strings, which were great, but harder to find and twice as expensive as XLs. Then I saw a 10-pack of XLs on sale for $25, jumped on it, and I quickly rediscovered that the XLs were every bit as good as the DRs for half the cost. Unfortunately, life reared its ugly head shortly afterward and I had to sell my gear. But when I got got back into playing again last year, that 5-year old 10-pack of XLs had six packs left, so I cracked a bag open. It was like they just came off the factory line, no tarnishing, same brilliant tone, and the first set lasted me 7 weeks. I flirted with the new NYXLs (8-38) for about six months and quality-wise they're everything great about XLs and then a little bit more, but they're also $12 a set. I'm back to 9-42 XLs and about one more string change away from ordering another 10-pack. The moral of the story is that if you like your tone bright and cutting, you just can't do better than D'Addario XLs without spending 2-3 times the money (on D'Addario NYXLs).

Nice Strings for the price

By Joe from Lockport, IL USA
Music Background: Gigging musician

I have very sweaty palms and when I play live, it's get really bad. I know everyone's sweat is a little different but for me, it seems that mine eats up strings pretty badly and these are no exception. I know I should wipe my stings down after every set, but I have more things to worry about and I never do this. However, for those guitars at home that don't get a beating, the stings seems to last months on end.

The thing is, when on sale, you can pick up a 10 pack for $30 which nets things out to $3 per set, and with free shipping, its an awesome deal.

Bottom line, for the price, the are really good strings...and yes, there are probably better strings out there but you will pay more.

I've used these for years and they always satisfy!

By Mark from Chicago, IL
Music Background: Gigging musician for the past 30 years

I've gone thru many brands and this is the one I rely upon. I rarely suffer from strings breaking (knock on wood!). I can keep a set on for weeks sometimes months and they keep on going. These are especially great for floyd rose setups. They bend awesomely. Just give them a good stretching when stringing up and they're good to go. Very stable. They have great shelf life. Granted, I've quite a few guitars so I can go thru a box relatively quickly. But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a box even if you have only one guitar and change strings once a month. I string my Hamers, Strats, Ibanez and LPs with these. I have them on a couple of teles as well. Except for one tele (an old one) which I always string with Roto 10s for it's unique tone and feel. (but those wear out quickly and get dull). On my Hamer Special FM, they are really great and so comfortable to play. The tone I get from that guitar with these strings is awesome.

Great strings all around

By William L. from Riverside, CA
Music Background: Simi pro musician Project studio recording

Ive been playing a long time and I've tried a LOT of different strings.
I always wind up back with D"addario strings eventually..
The tone IMHO i checks all my boxes for what a good set of strings encompasses . I usually buy two boxes of ten sets at a time. That sums up how much I like this company. I also use their nylon strings for my classical guitar

Best Strings on the Planet

By Sweetwater Customer from Monticello, IN
Music Background: Songwriter/Home Recordist

I have been using XL120's for about 21 years. When I first started playing I had nothing but trouble with every other brand of strings, they either broke easily or cost too much for a teenager. The D'Addario's were endorsed, at the time, by guys like Satriani and Vai so how could I have gone wrong. And even though I still can't play like those shredders I can appreciate a great string. Buy 'em you'll love 'em.

Best strings made

By Jim S. from White Haven, PA
Music Background: Pro Musician / Studio Owner

As a player of 35+ years, the feel of a string becomes more critical each day. The second most critical aspect is longevity. I switched to D’Addario several years ago after a near lifetime with another brand and I am very happy I did. Fantastic sounding string that feels great and lasts.
