What Is a Solidbody Guitar?
A solidbody guitar is a type of electric guitar with a body made of solid wood. This does not mean the body is always a single piece of wood. Solidbody guitars may be made of multiple pieces of wood glued together to form a solid mass. Most importantly, solidbody guitars typically do not have hollowed-out sections, except where material is removed to accommodate pickups, electronics, and controls.
Solidbody guitars, such as the Fender Telecaster, Fender Stratocaster, Gibson Les Paul, and Gibson SG, are widely recognized as quintessential rock ‘n’ roll guitars. They’re built for durability and are commonly used across a wide range of musical styles.
Hollowbody vs. Solidbody Electric Guitar: Which Is Right for Me?
While both are types of electric guitars, their construction differs significantly, which influences how they respond and feel when played. Technically, yes, you can play a solidbody guitar without a guitar amplifier. However, these guitars produce very little acoustic volume on their own. To access their full tonal range and practical playing volume, solidbody electric guitars are typically played through an amplifier.
