Raising the Revstar Standard

Yamaha’s Revstar Standard RSS02T is an update of the original Revstar series of guitars, refined to offer improved comfort and even more striking visuals! This maple-topped double-cut’s lightweight chambered mahogany body is loaded with two rich and warm sounding VP5 pickups that deliver classic P-90 tones — from clean jazz textures on the neck pickup to wild overdriven leads on the bridge. The neck is comprised of carbon-reinforced mahogany so that it will stay straight and true in even the most challenging of environments. What’s more, Yamaha has equipped this Revstar with their proprietary “focus” switch that shifts your tone’s resonant frequency and supercharges your pickup’s power. If you’re looking for a high-performance, no-nonsense axe with explosive tones, rock-solid playability, and sleek modern aesthetics, the RSS02T sets the standard.

Comfortably curved Revstar body

The Revstar’s curvy lines and classic aesthetics are said to be inspired by the utilitarian British Café racer motorbikes found in 1960s-era London, adding a tough no-frills attitude to these sleek guitars. The unique double-cut chambered body was developed using Yamaha’s Acoustic Design process to optimize the Revstar’s balance, deliver a resonant tone, and reduce weight. One strum of the RSS02T is all it takes to see how Yamaha’s research paid off: the Revstar’s body is a supremely comfortable design that showcases Yamaha’s steadfast dedication to musical innovation!

Yamaha-designed P-90 pickups deliver iconic tone

As far as we're concerned here at Sweetwater, every guitarist should have a guitar loaded with P-90 single-coil pickups in their collection. You get the snap and spank of a single-coil pickup, but with the girth and low-mid richness that you'd expect from a humbucker. The custom-designed VP5 P-90 pickups in the RSS02T utilize Alnico V magnets, a silver baseplate, and plain enamel wire, creating a clear, vintage-inspired tone with plenty of bite. Set your tube amplifier at its breakup point, and you'll be able to take the RSS02T from clean and chiming to blazing overdrive just with the volume knob.

Bring your sound into focus

Yamaha’s Revstar line already introduced us to their clarity-boosting “Dry” switch, and the RSS02T offers another distinct tonal feature to stand out from the crowd: the “Focus” switch. This dual-purpose push-pull switch adjusts the resonant frequency of your guitar’s tone and kicks up the power. When testing it out at Sweetwater, we found that it’s an incredibly versatile feature that’s just as good at achieving “rolled off” jazz tones as it is for boosting your amp into overdrive territory.

Yamaha Revstar Standard RSS02T Electric Guitar Features:

  • Ultra-comfortable and lightweight chambered mahogany body with a maple top
  • 3-piece carbon-reinforced mahogany set neck with double-cutaway offers incredible upper fret access
  • Yamaha VP5 P-90 pickups deliver pristine and organic clean tones, with the classic P-90 bite when overdriven
  • “Focus” switch shifts your tone’s resonant frequency and amps up your power
  • Jumbo stainless steel frets are highly resistant to wear
  • Highly playable 12-inch fingerboard radius
  • Rock-solid Tune-o-matic bridge and sleek racing tailpiece

Fun Guitar

I wanted to upgrade my backup electric guitar in my collection. My main guitar is a PRS CE24 and I realized that I never picked up my Epiphone LP after getting that. I wanted a guitar that was unique and different from my PRS but still fit into my style of music. This guitar definitely fits the bill!

The different tones from the guitar are so fun to play around with and the p90s are fun. The boost is interesting as well. The stainless steel frets on a guitar of this style and price range is a big plus for me. My one complaint is that the tuning stability is the worst out of all the guitars I've owned. It's not horrible but definitely requires more tunes in a session than my others. I will try some graphite in the nut at next string change. If that doesn't fix it, then I might be paying for a nicer nut in the future.

Overall, I am thrilled with this purchase. I am reaching for this guitar just as much as my PRS. And the unique sounds I'm getting from it is inspiring me in different ways.

Love this guitar

This guitar provides what I want.

Sound wise, the P90s have a crazy awesome growl through my Boss ir200 on the Diamond preamp, and the 2nd & 4th positions on the selector switch add a peculiar almost 1/3rd engaged wah pedal type sound. The boost switch adds a fat punch to leads (not that I'm much of a lead player), and would potentially be awesome for thickening up rhythm tones for a 3 piece rock outfit.

I can get a beautiful range of clean tones too, from bright and chimey to dark and smokey by rolling the tone knob up and down across the pickup selection range.

I've had no trouble finding exactly the sounds I want with this guitar.

More important for me is the feel. I *love* the satin neck. The shape and thickness feel slightly heftier than the neck on my LTD PS-1000, and I prefer that heft for my hands.
I suspect it's the chambering in the body that supplies all the resonance, which I can feel in my hands and abdomen while playing. Does that affect the tone coming through the speakers? No idea. But it *feels* amazing to play. There's an acoustic like response that makes the guitar feel more alive and responsive compared to some solid bodies I've played. It's very similar to my PS-1000, which is semi-hollow, but it feels somehow more focused.

Looks are subjective but I love the blue, the off white pickguard, and the tailpiece. The unique headstock is cool too.

Hardware wise, I've had no trouble keeping the thing in tune, and after some crazy weather changes and new strings, I found setting the intonation to be incredibly easy.

For my needs, this guitar punches SO FAR above its price. I'm blown away. I want another one, or maybe one in each color. I can't say enough about how good this instrument is.

Very Fun Guitar

This is a really great guitar that is unique and different from a number of the other guitars I own (Fender, Gibson, PRS). It is very well constructed and very fun to play. It has great tone and beautiful resonance that may be attributable to the chambering in the body and great overtones provided by the tailpiece. The P-90s on this guitar have a chimey-ness that is amazing. I use this guitar when playing in a pop rock band, but I also have enjoyed the 'Focus' switch and often use this guitar for playing in a jazz combo. It is very easy to play, beautifully constructed (I love the blue color), and it is sonically rich. The weight is good - mine is slightly under 8 pounds, but would be nice if it was a touch lighter (I am picky about weight). That said, it feels very well balanced. I love the P-90s but mine can be a bit noisy and were initially hard to control the hum. I use a noise gate now and that mostly keeps it under control. Out of the box, the pickups were a bit high (p90 mounting screws were almost touching the strings), and I'll probably bring the action down slightly. It has become my current favorite guitar and more than holds its own against my other guitars ranging from $1000-$3500. Well worth the money. Overall this is a very fun guitar!

love this guitar

I seriously want another in a different color. Other guitars from other brands are much less interesting to me now that I have this. Here is where i'd include several loving and positive emojis if that were possible for sweetwater reviews.
Music background: I love bands like the Beatles, They Might Be Giants and EDM

Outstanding Guitar

I've been watching the Revstar Standard for a bit of time and looking for the right time to get mine. Let me tell you something, this is not a budget guitar in the least! The guitar build, finish, everything is simply flawless. The body reminds me a bit of the shape of the SG600 from the 70s but isn't nearly as thick. The tones this guitar generates with the P-90s and five position switch are amazing - you can cover anything from traditional and mondern country to blues to rock. Don't let the price fool you - This guitar plays well above its' price.
