About Fretless Bass Guitars
Whether you're searching for the classic look and feel of an upright fretless bass, or just a fretless version of the most popular electric bass styles, Sweetwater is here to help you find the right instrument.
The sound of your bass is going to be largely determined by its pickup system. You'll find humbucking pickups, single-coil pickups, piezo pickups, and often various combinations. Humbuckers are great for rock and blues, single-coils are popular for jazz and indie styles, and a piezo pickup can capture an organic, acoustic-sounding tone.
In addition to four-string fretless basses, Sweetwater also offers five-string fretless bass guitars. A five-string bass adds a lower string below the low E string, often tuned to B for ultra-low bass notes.
Scale length can be a good indicator of how your bass is going to feel when you play it, specifically its string tension. The longer scale lengths, such as 35-inch, have more tension on the strings. Basses with a longer scale length will have strings that feel "tighter" than basses with a shorter scale length. This is purely a matter of preference " do you like your strings to feel slinky and bendy, or taught and firm?
