A "Best in Class" Precision Bass Goes Fretless with Unique Features

Leo Fender designed and built the world's first electric bass guitar in late 1951 and every electric bass made since then is unquestionably a direct descendent. Although the Precision Bass, as it was eventually called, was almost flawless in its design, some players, like Tony Franklin, wanted the unique sound of a fretless bass plus the expanded tonal range available with an extra pickup. Not surprisingly, Fender was more than happy to build Tony a fretless Precision Bass, and now you can own a Fender Tony Franklin Fretless Precision Bass, too.

Lightweight solid alder body

Bass guitars are big and that can mean heavy, too. This Tony Franklin Fretless Precision Bass has a solid alder body, which is resonant, but relatively light, which you'll appreciate after two or three hours up on stage. It's also equipped with the Hipshot Bass Xtender for "Drop D" tuning on the low E string.

Maple neck with modern "C" shape

Leo Fender wasn't a guitar player, so he didn't really know that guitars weren't supposed to have maple necks. Eventually, the blond maple necks became a Fender trademark. The Tony Franklin Fretless Precision Bass has a nicely balanced maple neck with a modern "C" shape.

Unfinished ebony fingerboard

While Fender became quite famous for its blond maple necks and fretboards, Tony Franklin wanted something more in keeping with the old traditional upright basses. So the Tony Franklin Fretless Precision Bass features an unfinished ebony fingerboard, which is the perfect complement to the maple neck and helps give this bass its distinctive sound.

Two specially voiced pickups

While the Precision Bass has traditionally come equipped with just one split single-coil pickup, Fender equipped this Signature Series bass with an upgraded Precision Bass American Series pickup plus a Tony Franklin Signature Series Jazz Bass bridge pickup with hex screw lugs and ceramic bar magnets. This delivers a wide range of bass voicings, from vintage to modern.

Fender Tony Franklin Fretless Precision Bass Features:

  • Signature Precision Bass designed for Tony Franklin
  • Combines P Bass and J Bass pickups for a huge sonic range to explore
  • Unfinished ebony fingerboard sets a great playing foundation while enhancing snap and attack
  • Maple neck with Modern "C" profile plays smoothly without feeling cumbersome
  • Drop the low E string down to a D instantly with the Hipshot Bass Xtender Drop D tuning key

Reviews

Love this bass
After a lot of research, I decided on this model. I saw the first impression, it was wow! The colour is incredible. I just tell you that I loved the palette of sounds and how comfortable it is to play it. I thank Leugim who assisted me in this process for his patience and help.
Sweeet.
Beautiful instrument, I can't believe the price for an American made Fender bass. The hipshot D-tuner is a nice bonus too, Sweetwater made it easy, I paid the extra small fee for the pro set-up before they sent it out. Plays like a dream with nice low action and plenty of "mwah".
Music background: Longtime player...but new fretless convert!
Fabulous Fretless
Purchased this and all I've done is upgrade the bridge to a KSM Foundation system and change the strings. All of this is obviously to my personal preferences. It was tremendous out of the box. The sustain, sound, feel, intonation - everything about this rig is delicious. Thrilled to have jumped on it - it's my 5th Fender ... Sweetwater takes excellent care of me -

WOW!!!!
I've had other fretless basses but this one is the killer one. The tone is incredible and the playability is butter. Please believe when I tell you that the sound this bass produce is incomparable. I have Fender Pbasses, Jbasses and PJ's and other brands but this one is a KEEPER. The ebony fretboard gives this baby an unique tone. Thanks to Julio Jimenez, my sales engineer, for helping me with this buy. Sweetwater is the best in this business. Buy this bass before Fender rise the price or even discontinue it because is hurting the Original 60's and 50's series.

An amazing bass with a unique voice. But beware Fender's "quality control"
There is no other bass quite like the Tony Franklin. It's a P bass, so it's uncomplicated and it has that massive tone that seems to work perfectly with almost every musical style. But it's fretless, so it also has incredible range of expression -- a vocal-like quality, like if Isaac Hayes turned into a bass this is what it would sound like. The added DiMarzio-style Jazz pickup on the bridge adds a Jaco-like tone and you can blend them (within limits) with the selector switch. The ebony fingerboard is visually striking, almost frictionless, and adds to that "mwah" tone. It's also very comfortable to play, in the 9-pound range and although I've seen some concerns about neck dive (due to the vintage tuners and the Hipshot detuner) I don't really feel it, and I'm pretty sensitive to neck divey-ness. Maybe more than any other bass I've played, the Tony Franklin lets me express myself musically -- a "musical instrument" in every sense of that term.

However: I am deducting half a start because of Fender's so-called quality control. I played this bass in the store and thought I had put it through a thorough test. But after getting it home, I discovered a serious wiring problem in the pickups when the pickup selector was in the middle position. Sweetwater was extremely helpful getting me connected with a local store to have it repaired, and paid for the repair. But having to take a bass into the shop two days after buying it, to have someone wire the pickups properly, is not the kind of quality experience I expect from a $+ bass. This is the first Fender I've bought in many years and I've heard stories of the dropoff in Fender's QC, and I believe them now and so should you.
