King of the Mwa sound for sure!

By Alberto Llanes from Shippensburg, PA on March 29, 2023

I put Thomastik-Infeld flats on it to protect it and the MWAAAAAAAAAAAA is definitely there if that's what you're after. I love it. Remember that it's a hollow bodied so you shouldn't have it hanging on the wall but instead kept safely in it's case when not in play. I wanted a solid body to compliment it on the wall for easy access so got the Gary Willis which is a perfect sibling. Very similary (almost identical) dimentions. Which has more MWAH? Definitely this SRH505F. I don't know if it's the body difference or pickups, but it's sound is certainly unique. Think the bassist in the FIRM. I'd never part with the bass. Ever.

My favorite bass!!

By Sweetwater Customer on July 5, 2022

This bass is incredible! That tone, somewhere between a P bass and an upright...amazing! Mwah all over the neck. This bass arrived set up perfectly and the playability is really off the charts. It is also very light, so I can play it comfortably for hours. Very happy with my purchase, and with Sweetwater!!!

Just what I was after!

By Nick Vaughn from Houghton Lake, Michigan on May 23, 2019 Music Background: Play guitar, but bass has been my main instrument for over 40 years. Most all genres.

I love this bass, I was seeking a specific tone and finally found it right here! Enough said, just read the reviews, watch some video of it being played. If you're like me, you will have a hard time putting it down.
Arrived setup beautifully. A keeper no doubt.

Great for those who hate solid body heavy weights!

Very satisfied with the bass. I bought this from guitar Center at this price so it disturbs me that SW is showing an MSRP price claiming ur saving money.

high-end bass feel

By Bill from New York on July 31, 2017

I own some high-end basses but the last 2 under $800 Ibanez basses I've purchased have been excellent. The designer's at Ibanez hit a home run with the SRH505F. The chambered body (about 7.5 lbs) and thin neck make this bass very comfortable to play. The tone is close to an upright bass, This is my first experience playing with Elixir strings. I really love the smooth nanoweb coating. I will use this bass to play in my jazz band. I look forward with trying it with my rock band.

Best bang for the buck

Just lovely! The fit and finish especially at this price point is very good. The tone is spectacular. The neck and playability is very impressive. The piezo is perfect. It's hard to find things wrong with it. The tuners are so-so and the nut should be better than the plastic that it is. There is a bit of a sloppy hole that the output jack fits in to but it does not show. I actually restrung this to run high C to E and put a hip shot on the E to drop it down to C. Very little adjusting it was ready to go. Very impressed overall.

Ibanez SRH505 Fretless 5 string bass

By Garry Long from The Villages, Florida on June 10, 2017

Been playing this for a few weeks now. Although not quite the sound of a double standup bass, it is pretty close. The setup was spot on. Great tone on the low "B" string. No floppy sound. It has good balance and very comfortable due to it's light weight. The more I play it, the better I like it.Well made.

Ibanez SRH505F fretless bass

By John Reid from West Texas on May 21, 2017 Music Background: Pro

Just got this bass. After years of owning some really fine high end fretless basses, I honestly wasn't expecting much from an instrument at this price point. Wrong! I plugged it in, tuned it up, and from the first couple of notes I knew that it was a keeper! The tone is big and fat and woody for days with tons of growl. The neck feels good and the body is comfortable exactly as advertised. I wish that it came with a gig bag, and I wish that they had made the fretlines lighter in color instead of black, but these are fairly minor details. It's a great instrument at an affordable price.

Very fun bass!

By Jona Artz from Oregon on October 3, 2023

The bass showed up early just in time for a gig and recording session in another state. I had one afternoon of practice with a new band and then the first gig with it the next day. It sounded awesome. The next day in the studio with the same amp, it had a horrible distortion. After several attempts including plugging straight into the board, I finally had to turn the volume knob on the bass way down to keep from over-driving the signal. I was very pleased with the final result. It sounds very close to an upright but much easier to play. Other than a little spot of excess glue on the headstock the bass showed up in perfect condition. The Ibanez MB300C case fits it very well.

Nice bass. Spacing(16.5 mm) a little bit to close, but the bass sound great! Thank you!!

Fretless fun

By Marty from NY on January 31, 2023 Music Background: Long time player

This bass is a blast to play. I've had it for almost a year, and am enjoying every minute. For the price, it's well worth it. It's slightly underpowered, thus the 4.5 rating. Just crank your amp/preamp and have fun.

Love it!

By Mike from Nebraska on January 21, 2018 Music Background: Been playing piano since I was 4. Mutli-instrumentalist. I play bass whenever I'm in a band setting. Been playing bass for 17 years.

I absolutely love this bass.

I could do without the fret lines, but I don't really mind fret lines in general, especially if they are wood. What I strongly dislike is that the fret lines are seemingly plastic. It's hard to tell, but they are definitely not wood. They seem to be black plastic, possibly nylon, definitely a polymer of some sort.

Having played this bass A TON, these plastic fret lines have caused an issue to arise. The rosewood wears down (and yes I'm using the recommended flat wound strings) at a much faster rate than the plastic fret lines. I am now able to feel the plastic fret lines as ridges in the fretboard as I play. I find that to be quite annoying. What's even worse is that the wood in an area up the neck under the g-string is worn quite a bit more than the rest of the neck, so the plastic fret lines in that area protrude from the fretboard even more. This is actually causing the fret lines to begin to perform the same function as an actual fret!!! I physically can no longer play the quarter tones in between the fret lines in that area of the neck on the g-string. Also, sliding up the g-string in that area doesn't sound like a smooth fretless slide, it sounds almost as if there are frets. Trying to play the notes on the protruding fret lines in that area of the neck results in buzzing, muted, unclear notes, as opposed to the nice, clear, specific notes that were produced when I first purchased this bass barely 7 months ago.

I am going to plane the entire neck with sandpaper and a 12" radius block. I am the going to seal the entire neck by coating it with multiple thin layers of thin cyanoacrylate (super glue). I'll sand the neck with finer levels grit sandpaper as I go, using the 12" radius block as I go. Finally, once it's all dried, cured and hard I'll give it a good buffing to make is shine like glass. I know this will result in change in the sound of the instrument, but I am actually looking forward to that! The instrument sounded great to begin with, but I feel a hard, sealed neck will help me achieve a sound I like slightly more.

A lovely bass!

By M.LR on January 2, 2019 Music Background: Varying styles/ bass player

I purchased this bass in Nov 2017 and have been playing it every so often, maybe 2 to 3 times a month on average at the moment somtimes more depending on the mood of things and have found it to be lvely bass to play, sure their are other higher end instruments out their but this bass is a classic within it's own right. Even though it has a simple piezo volume and piezo tone and piiezo bridge pick up tone or tones are quite variable and has lovely sweet spot when putting the tone knob half way up.Has a nice back end sound when played at the bridge and a lovely warm upright sound when played at the neck. The Panga Panga fingerboard gives a nice thwart sound which sounds naturral wth the chambered body. This bass is is a quality build and is up there with some the higher end basses. These bases are limited edition so need to be quick if you want one.
