About 6-String Acoustic Guitars
No other instrument brings your musical ideas to life quite like an acoustic guitar. From the bedroom to the big stage, acoustic guitars have given countless artists a musical outlet to express themselves.
Acoustic guitars range from basic, affordable models to very detailed handcrafted guitars with features suited to advanced players. Let’s discuss what an acoustic guitar is, the types of acoustic guitar strings available at Sweetwater, and some frequently asked questions.
Before we get started, though, if you’re wondering where to begin when buying an acoustic guitar, check out Sweetwater’s Acoustic Guitar Buying Guide for a deep dive into what to look for when buying your first or next acoustic guitar.
What is an acoustic guitar?
An acoustic guitar has a resonant body and a soundhole that projects the sound like a speaker. In its natural state, an acoustic guitar requires no electronic amplification.
Type of acoustic guitar strings
There are two string types in acoustic guitars: nylon and steel. Nylon string guitars have less string tension, thus producing a smoother tone and making them great for fingerpicking. Steel string guitars, on the other hand, have a brighter tone due to the higher string tension and are great for strumming and users who prefer a pick over fingerpicking.
Check out this article on our picks for the best strings for acoustic guitars.
How to record acoustic guitars
There are many methods for recording an acoustic guitar. Sweetwater has provided numerous videos and articles on the topic. Check out the links below to see the different ways we have recorded acoustic guitars.
