Yamaha c40 classical
I love this guitar. This is the number one guitar I practice on and then I play my stratocasters. I think every guitar player should have one of these in there collection. Great guitar for a great price.
Fantastic !!!!!!
I purchased the demo that sweetwater had and this guitar is awesome sound feel and playability is absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!!! if you are thinking of getting one of these do it you wont be disappointed.I have been playing guitar for 40 years and im satisfied.
Fantastic Value, beautiful tone.
I purchased this guitar for my son knowing ahead of time that Yamaha has always made quality instruments regardless of the amount spent. I am not disappointed; in fact, I am elated that the Yamaha brand continues to offer a level of quality that typically can't be obtained without spending above the 500-dollar mark with other brands. This bare bones classical acoustic puts out very musical, ear pleasing tones that would please even the most discerning ear.
The frets are smooth, the action is right where you want it, and the strings are fantastic as well (albeit they wear out quickly, purchase an extra set when ordering). Intonation is also past acceptable, bordering on awesome. The neck feels incredible in my hands. It's smooth and fits well in both my and my son's hands. I love the wider more spaced-out frets. My hands have no issues moving around easily, no cramping into a small zone just to play chords.
This said, There are no bells and zero whistles, just a great tone, great feel, and an overall quality that should cost much more than the current price. I may purchase another for me so I can take it out of the house without worrying about damaging my more expensive Martin. Sweetwater shipped it well packaged without a single blemish. I just tuned it and away my son went. Thank you to my Sweetwater engineer Joseph Secu, who always picks up the phone to receive all of my orders and answer all of my questions. Ask for him when ordering, he's got your back!
Yamaha C4011 Classical Guitar
so happy I made the purchase/completely satisfied
I love this guitar!
I've been playing guitar for over 20 years, playing professionally in touring bands. I got the Yamaha C40II as a Christmas gift. I'm more of a rock player, but have taken an affinity for finger-style acoustic technique in the last 5-6 years. I was looking for an affordable nylon string to do some home recording. This guitar takes the cake and is exactly what I needed! It is very easy and fun to play. From the moment I picked it up, I didn't want to put it down - which, for me, is a fantastic sign! I definitely recommend this guitar for all levels of musicianship, from beginner to expert.
That said, I'm using this to play finger-style rock music, not explicitly classical pieces. So I don't know how this may fare for more traditional usage. But this guitar has a warm tone, great intonation, and the neck is quite smooth and playable.
All in all, 5 out of 5 stars! Absolutely recommend, very happy with the purchase. Sweetwater, as always, provided excellent customer service on this item! I ordered the fitted hardshell case, as well.
Beautiful
A simple and very beautiful sounding guitar. Just what was needed
Impressive Instrument
I don't play classical guitar. I bought this guitar because I wanted the sound of nylon strings layered into a track I'm producing. I was completely surprised at the quality of this affordable instrument. It's fantastic. I would highly recommend to any beginner or anyone wanting nylon string tone for their tracks.
The Perfect Student Guitar
was looking to delve into classical and finger style guitar but didn't want to commit to something expensive to start. This guitar has been shockingly great so far the playability and sounds for the price is awesome. I kept all my nice guitars locked away when my toddler was younger, this was the perfect one to leave around the house and teach him how to respect and be gentle with musical instruments. So far he has learned and i'm not anxious having my Taylor out. Don't hesitate if looking for a nylon string to start.
Great sound
I look forward to strumming every day!
Great guitar for learning!
This is a great guitar for beginning guitar players! It has Yamaha quality, very comfortable in my hands and easy to make chords. With a full, rich sound, this guitar will give me many years of service!
Great Beginner & Teacher Guitar
I purchased two of these Yamaha nylon string acoustic guitars, one for a student and the other for the teacher. This is a perfect learning instrument with beautiful tone and action. I highly recommend this guitar.
Very Happy
I've played guitars by other popular brands in the 200-350 dollar price range that just don't really feel or sound like a real classical guitar. This does, which makes it a no brainer recommendation for anyone wanting to spend less than 400.
Fantastic Guitar
Got this for my friend who was interested in learning. Once he took it out of the excellent packaging he immediately fell in love with it. Super light weight with a great finish. Plays and sounds great. Would definitely recommend this guitar for anyone interested in a classical style.
Very good entrypoint for beginners!
I like this particular guitar for two reasons: its popularity and its pricing.
I know that the C40 has been very popular even 4-5 years back. Having played with it for roughly a week and I can attest that it is a well constructed instrument, specifically designed to encourage beginners on their learning path. For example, the neck is sanded so that your hand can glide effortlessly up and down while playing. The sound is clear and warm. It obviously cannot compete with other guitars that cost $750 or more -- you get what you pay for and frankly a beginner should have no businesses around those more expensive guitars anyway. Nevertheless, it is a wonderful gift for those who are starting out.
Great service!
We received the guitar in short order (two days after order was placed) in perfect condition with a follow-up call to ask about our experience. I'd highly recommend this business!

My son loves it! Thank you
Yamaha C40II Full Scale-Excellent Choice
Bought thos for my son who played classical guitar in high school and who is legally blind. Though he's been playing piano as of late I know he still loves the guitar. So I bought him the Yamaha C40II classical nylon string guitar. I'm not a guitar player but drummer but been around lots of guitars. But I can play a few simple chords, so I know what a good and bad guitar sounds & looks like construction wise. This guy is excellent to start off with, it's a full scale so if you have small or petite hands I suggest you move down to 3/4 scale.
But as a quick note Sweetwater nailed it on delivering on time before Christmas. I know it was a challenge for them and all delivery services. Packaged very well, guitar came in it's own cardboard box then packed in a 2nd shipping box, bubble wrap on the bottom, side and top, so the inner box didnt move. No damage at all.
The guitar looks beautiful, the maple top and side and back woods which are different give it a beauty all it's own on contrast.
I did inspect the whole guitar and did not see any damage or poor workmanship. Seams, joints, bridge, neck, fretboard and tuners all looked solid. I strummed it a few times and just had to tune a few strings slightly and it was ready to play. So as a starter or beginners guitar. I see nothing wrong with guitar. Looks good, sounds good and atleast in my hands which are not huge or with lots of chordial dexterity, I was able to strum a few chords easily.
My son loved it when he opened the box on Christmas and is ready to go practice.
For the price I don't see how I could of bought anything better.
Thank you again Sweetwater for pointing me to the right direction.
nice beginners classical guitar
The c40 is a well made, nicely finished guitar. It has a decent sound for a beginners instrument. Worth the money and the service can't be beat.
Wonderful
Guitar arrive on time and package was in good condition. Good job Fedex. Guitar is a great guitar for the first time player. It looks great and sounds wonderful. I am really please with Sweetwater.
Great value!
This guitar has beautiful wood, great set up and great sound!
Outstanding!
I was interested in learning how to play guitar and didn't know where to look, until I found SweetWater. The customer service was the best I've ever experienced and they helped me to determine everything I would need to start my journey as a guitarist.
It's been 13 years
This was my first guitar ever, the other day I pulled it out and after some goood cleaning, OMG! After 13 years it sounds great! And the looks are just nice and classical
Although it's a beginners guitar, it sings beautifully with fresh strings. The action is a little high but after sanding the bridge I'm very very happy with how it plays.
Gonna use it for some film scoring, love the tight low end and crisp attack.
Great beginner guitar and great customer service
I had bought this guitar a little under a year ago. It was damaged in delivery and I was pretty upset. But I was really blown away by the customer service at Sweetwater! Brian F. had called to check in with the delivery, at which time I reported what had happened. Sweetwater replaced it and the new one I received plays beautifully with very warm tones for a beginner guitar. The strings required frequent tuning initially. But once the strings set, it rarely required additional tuning.
An amazing guitar
I bought this to learn how to play and it is very fun. I"m not too good but the guitar sounds amazing when by my brother plays. I am very glad that I purchased this guitar.
Yamaha C40
A great guitar at a great price. For something deemed 'entry level' this instrument is anything but. Whether you're brushing up on old, forgotten pieces or just beginning this guitar stands square in the middle of the Goldilocks zone. Just right!
Sweetwater Sound

Easy to play good sound in its price range for a nylon string acoustic guitar.
Also a great over dub guitar on some ska or reggae riffs.
Great starter guitar, or just another tone in your collection.

$50 Yamaha Guitar?!?
Bought this at a yard sale and just playing it knew it must be worth a lot of money. Checked on here to see, and I got the BEST deal, and thinking about buying another one at this incredible price. First, the one I have sounds SO GOOD...I fixed it up - it was homeless - meaning nobody playing it at all. My grandson is excited to have this. I am excited not only to find one in the yard sale and pay only what I offered, but the deal they have on this reduced is worth it. The case is only $25 - we'll get that next and then probably buy another whole set...GET IT if you are starting a beginner or even for more advanced students. It's a steal.
My wife loves it!
This guitar is the best starter guitar that anyone can hope for. Great for beginners but can hold its own against the higher priced guitar. The neck is well balanced and it has a warm sound .
Deal
Great price! I am a beginner and this just sounds amazing. I have been trying new strings with it too
My Yam C-40

l would recommend this to a friend . Delivery was good too.
Excellent!
Best Acoustic Guitar for beginner at a good price!
Lovely entry level classical guitar, but not just for beginners
I've owned this one for almost three years now and still play it very frequently. Changed strings pretty early on to D'Addario EJ45 Pro-Arte Classical Guitar Strings - Normal Tension.
I wanted to add something with nylon strings to the collection and this one was very appealing at the price point. I don't play it like a classical guitar so I cannot comment on it's playability in that aspect, but I find it easy to finger all the way down the neck and I love the sounds. Stuck a piezo mic on the body and amplify it. With reverb added in it sounds great.
A keeper for me.
Great guitar at an wonderful price
This guitar is just wonderful for its price. I have a steel, stringed acoustic/electric guitar, but I wanted a less expensive one for travel. In addition, I like the warm sound of nylon-stringed guitars. This little baby fits the bill and then some. Add that to Sweetwater's fantastic customer service and the folks who work for Sweetwater (thanks loads, Ben Porter, for all your help on this order) and free shipping--not just free, but it only took 2 days to reach me, and there's no way you can go wrong!
Recommended!
I'm glad that I choose Sweetwater to purchase my guitar. I've been looking for that guitar for long time. But I couldn't find anywhere cheaper than Sweetwater.
I got that guitar in short period of time. That's amazing because it's rarely happen if we order things online.
Not only that, I really love the guitar. I sounds really good. it's really light.
But there's only one thing. The 4th string is almost broken. I'm a little disappointed because it's not even a month.
Also there's some rust stain on 5th and 6th string.
Overall, I would recommend Sweetwater to my family and friends.
Thank you so much,
Mandie Surja
Pardon my bad English.
Price point
I absolutely love my new classical...it plays as well and sounds as good as a nylon string 3 or 4 times as much money, if not more..
Great starter
We've ordered a few for our students and they've really enjoyed them.
Not bad, very playable after a saddle adjustment.
I have several electric guitars and basses and a Martin D-18m acoustic, but I always wanted a nylon string classical. I had no idea if I would like a nylon string, so I didn't want to break the bank on it. I really wanted something to knock around on and to leave downstairs in the house.
After reading many inexpensive classical guitar reviews, I settled on the C40ii (although the label in the soundhole has C40 printed on it).
The guitar is well-constructed, simple, light, and easy to play. The action was incredibly high, and the neck had zero relief.
After sanding down the bridge saddle (a lot), I finally got 3mm at the 12th fret.
The tuners work well, with simple stamped metal brackets.
The instructions that came with the guitar indicate adjusting the truss rod, but from what I read and what I can see, the C40ii does not have a truss rod. I believe the instructions included are just Yamaha generic instructions for all their acoustics.
I honestly don't think you could go wrong with this guitar if you can adjust the action yourself or have a guitar shop do it inexpensively.
Yamaha c40II classic guitar
Like this guitar. It's a great beginner guitar with nylon strings. Would definitely recommend it.
Exactly what I needed
I have several electric guitars and also a nice steel-string acoustic. I have a "really cheap" nylon bought some decades ago at a swap meet or something. But I needed to get a "proper" one, that at least was playable and had good intonation. This model fits the bill at a great price. My rating doesn't mean this is a 4-star classical guitar. It's not. But for the price, it's excellent. It sounds nice - the upper mids really have a"chime" to them, lows are not "boomy" at all.
It comes with standard tension strings, I prefer the feel and sound of hard tension so I changed them within a day or two of receiving the guitar. This is an "older" model guitar and mine was sitting in the warehouse for a while I imagine... The "D" string started unwinding around the 5th fret within a day of playing around on it. The other wound strings also didn't look "new". But you can't really expect Sweetwater to restring every guitar that hasn't sold over time. And like I mentioned, I was going to change them anyway.
Yamaha C40
This is a beautiful guitar for the price. Sounds fairly good.
My only negative are the strings Yamaha chose, they could have installed a better set of strings as G is very dead sounding.
Great low-cost guitar
I've played both steel string acoustic and electric guitar for a while and my only audience is usually my dog. I started getting a little nostalgic and decided to check out a quality - low cost classical guitar, The Yamaha C40II turned out to be a truly great choice. Plus it was just like the one I learned on a LONG time ago.
I believe the Yamaha C40II is a really nice guitar with beautiful finish, great play-ability, and quality build.
pros - it's easy to play, Sweetwater set up the guitar really well, it was easy to play right out of the box. The over all tone is nice and the guitar looks great for the price and it has quality hardware, Yamaha always makes a great guitar no matter the price.
The only con - All though the guitar has really nice low end tone, rich and strong. It lacks a bit when it comes to the higher strings, I'ts a little weak but not enough to really complain about. Keep in mind the guitar cost $...
In my opinion the C40II is a truly great low cost classical guitar.
Yamaha C40II classical guitar
This is a beautiful classical guitar. I placed my order on a Wednesday and received it on a Thursday. Upon inspection I could see that the action was very high, I tuned it found back buzz on the "A" and "D" strings when fretted on the second fret of each string. After a week those two strings began to fray at the second fret. I contacted my sales representative and he did put me in contact with a technician. I did explain what was going on and the resolution was to take it to a qualified luthier who could conduct some fret work and Sweetwater would reimburse the work done. I unfortunately live in a farm/rural area and a qualified technician for guitars is two and half hours away. I did change the strings and lowered the saddle and it did help somewhat. This guitar unfortunately does not qualify for the 55 point inspection by Sweetwater due to the monetary value. I will hopefully get the guitar to a qualified technician for the work and contact Sweetwater upon completion. Sweetwater does have great and friendly customer service. They will find a solution for whatever issue there may be with your instrument.
booyah!!!
Nice sounding guitar for the price range, although, the action is a little high beyond the middle of the neck, i.e, space between strings and fret board, making a clearer sounding note a challenge, especially with barre chords. Great beginner guitar .
Good beginner guitar
Been playing mostly steel strings for 40 years & wanted to learn some classical pieces, so I got the C40 knowing that it's a low-end guitar and that I'll probably have to do some tweaking. Out of the box, low E was about 6mm at the 12th fret… unplayable if u play up there. Frets were unfinished, which I expected. So when I changed the strings (which only lasted 2 weeks, due to the unfinished frets) I polished the frets & sanded the saddle down as low as I could & got 4mm at the 12th fret… playable, but not easy. Should have returned the guitar in hindsight, but I've altered it & I'll live with it. Tone is outstanding and it stays in tune once the strings are broken in. Great beginner guitar if you stay towards the bottom of the neck and not try to learn Asturias.
C40
I like the Yamaha C40 guitar very well. It's a good beginner guitar.
Yamaha C40
This guitar had good reviews and even though l have never seen a Yamaha guitar that l thought was worth the price l purchased one. It looks good and sounds good but the action is so high it is virtually unplayable beyond the third fret. Perfect for a Dobro, worthless as a regular guitar. All together a total waste of money. If this is typical l will spend my money elsewhere from now on.
