Why In-ear Drivers Matter
When it comes to monitoring accuracy, both the type and quantity of drivers in your in-ears make a difference.
Types of in-ear drivers
Dynamic drivers are like miniaturized loudspeakers crammed into an earphone. Their moving-coil technology resembles the drivers used in your everyday earbuds but is specialized to deliver a flat response for monitoring. Dynamic in-ears tend to be cost-effective and can provide a full-range listening experience using just one or two drivers.
Balanced-armature drivers employ stationary voice coils and can, therefore, be made much smaller and provide a faster and more detailed response than many dynamic drivers. However, due to their comparatively limited frequency response, balanced-armature in-ears are often used in multiples with a crossover system or paired with dynamic drivers to flesh out the mid and bass registers.
No one driver type is superior. But looking at the strengths of dynamic (inexpensive and full) and balanced-armature (fast and detailed) drivers can give you insight into what type of in-ear is right for your needs.
Number of in-ear drivers
Not many PA speakers on the market today contain just a single driver; most use at least two elements — an LF woofer and an HF tweeter — fed through a crossover to deliver a flat, full-range listening experience. This is true of in-ear monitors today, too. A greater number of drivers, be they dynamic or balanced armature, gives the in-ear designers more tuning options. As a result, the more drivers in an earphone, the flatter and fuller the frequency response will generally be.
