Insane Accuracy Meets Satisfying Lows

Do you crave uncompromising sound quality but want a bit more satisfaction in the low end than strict accuracy? You're going to love ER4XR in-ear monitors. These IEMs deliver Etymotic Research's next-gen earphone technology, including phenomenal accuracy, but are equipped with a touch of extra presence in the low end that makes them the preferred option among the drummers and bass players here at Sweetwater. Beyond that, ER4XRs deliver the same 92% accuracy, 45-ohm impedance, and up to 42dB of isolation that make the series such a hit.

The original name in IEMs

A little known fact about Etymotic Research is that they take the credit for developing the original balanced-armature receivers behind today's top in-ear micro-drivers. The original ER4 earphones are considered by many to be the original isolating in-ear because they were the first to employ this technology, which ultimately revolutionized the world of personal monitoring. As this legacy has continued, few IEMs today can boast the kind of isolation and accuracy you'll get from these updated ER4 series models.

Complete accessory kit included

When you buy a nice set of high-end in-ear monitors, it's nice to know that you're getting the complete package, and Etymotic Research wants to be sure you know you're getting it. That's why they ship their ER4 models with more than just the standard 1/4" headphone adapter. For starters, you get a very nice zippered storage case for you IEMs and accessories. These accessories include a couple of pairs of Etymotic's standard 3-flange eartips, two pairs of large 3-flange eartips, and a couple of pairs of large black foam eartips. You also get replacement filters to keep your IEMs clean and a shirt clip. Lastly, you'll get a performance certificate indicating that your in-ears met and passed the high standards Etymotic holds their products to.

Etymotic Research ER4XR In-ear Monitors Features:

  • Ideal IEMs for anyone who needs superior accuracy but also satisfying low end
  • A perfect in-ear choice for performing musicians in need of top-end personal monitors
  • Over 92% response accuracy from 20Hz–16kHz
  • Slight low-end emphasis retains accuracy while providing added low-end definition
  • Enjoy your sound in up to 42dB of acoustic isolation
  • Includes detachable 5' cord, 1/4" adapter, flanged and foam eartips, filter removal tool, replacement filters, shirt clip, zippered storage case, and performance certificate

Detail with just enough bass

Where to begin? I've been using using Etymotic ER4-XRs for about 5 years now playing bass live and for studio work: If you can get over the feeling of having a driver all the way inside your head literally to the bone, you will be rewarded with a soundstage and detail few other IEMs in its class can match. Little things you never notice pop out all of a sudden and are blatantly obvious. Aftermarket Comply foam tips are definitely recommended, I highly disliked the flanged tips but your mileage may vary. There is just enough low end response to bring out the bass instruments while staying pretty flat, in fact I think the XR models are probably more along the lines of what most people would consider flat. Any flatter would sound pretty sterile to my ears. Being a single driver dosnt hold this thing back at all clarity wise, it can complete with multi driver and blow any other single Westone, Shure, etc away. It's not like have subs in your ear canal, but that's not really what you want in a pro IEM, you want clarity and maybe just a touch of low end. Etymotic for the win.

Nitche Appeal

These are my favorite (the reference not extended bass) but these etymotic products are not like other products. Yes the sound is fantastic, but it will take time to get your ears used to having the plug on the inside, not on the outside of the ear. I can say that most people will never be comfortable with them. If you don't use them as directed, they will not give superior response. If you wear them correctly, the sound will be better than anything else. There is a comfort sacrifice to get the good sound. Be prepared. if not, buy something you will be happy with.

High End Reference

I come from Audeze LCD-3, Sennheiser HD800, AT ATH-W5000
and so forth and on background. I was looking for portables for porch use, for my iBasso XD90, obviously with high end expectations, while not having more experience in in-ears than Om Audio Inearpiece's. I narrowed it down to Etymotic's ER4XR,
top two models from Shure, and Westone W series. Now, I gave a really hard time to my Sweetwater agent, that I depend on, and sold me more than 3k of the good stuff from Sweetwater,on this.
We went through every nuance of what my preferences were for in-ears, and we came to the ER4XR conclusion.
I did not regret that decision. Why?
The low end - Senn HD800 owners will be happy- very similar low end response, abyss deep, controlled, super-behaved, best quality bass response that I heard, in any headphone, regardless of the price. +3 Db bump or not, this is the best balanced bass you can buy, by a slight margin from AT ATH-W5000, but that one has full ebony wood casing. Fantastic achievement.
The mids - take every review you read about Hifiman HE searies mids,, than add some Grado-like in your face dymamics, and youll get it.
The highs - anothet analogy: If you ever heard Cerwin-Wega horns or RCF super-tweeters, you got the picture.
So, by all means and purposes, what you got is a Senn HD800 crossed with euphonics of Schiit fully balanced amps, from the likes of Mjolnir, to Ragnarok, or Senn's HDVD800.
All for $359, and a high-end DAP, like the iBasso DX90, or FiiO X5/X7.
But, there's a price for it, for some pepople. Not everyone will feel comfortable with ER4XR's "deep insertion" feature and requirement to reach this level of musicality.
Regardless of the buds provided, these gotta go DEEP in your ear canal, to the point where you FEEL the pressure ojf closing the canal's air vent, and giving it up to the Etymotics, to shoot freely to your exposed ear drums. If you can allow this, for the sake of the sound extraordinaire, than you are in for a treat. If not, stick to less-evasive solutions, so called earbuds, or full size on, or over the ears. Its up to you, and your preference.
