Behringer Effects: Part of a Balanced Pedalboard!

Since 1989, Behringer has helped musicians and engineers get their hands on the gear they love for less. This same principle guides Behringer’s wide range of guitar pedals and stompbox effects today. For less than the price of most practice amps, guitar and bass players can enjoy a well-furnished pedalboard full of quality Behringer stomps to stay competitive in an increasingly crowded market.

Are you searching for a pedal to scratch a particular tonal itch? Perhaps you’re a new player building out a pedalboard for the first time? Read on to learn how Behringer continues to shake up the pedal market in ways that are best for you, the customer.

History of Behringer Guitar Effects

Behringer V-AMP

Behringer’s foray into dedicated guitar effects began in 2001 with the V-AMP. This quirky digital desktop amp modeler helped kick off the direct-recording phenomenon as we know it. Thanks to the V-AMP’s dozens of onboard preamp models, speaker emulations, and 24-bit digital effects, guitarists could quickly achieve giggable tones without miking an amp. And not just cleans, either — even pop-punk and metal were on the table.

The innovative V-AMP was soon followed by the BASS V-AMP and V-AMP 2 modelers, along with “PRO” rackmount versions of each model with expanded I/O. For players who still dig the simplicity of these desktop units, the third-generation V-AMP 3 is the best of the bunch, with improved models and convenient audio over USB.

Behringer V-Tone Collection

Around 2003, Behringer released its first line of true effects stompboxes: the V-Tone series. This lineup originally included the red-boxed ADI21 acoustic driver and gray-boxed BDI21 bass driver and would later include the blue-boxed GDI21 electric guitar driver with analog amp and cab simulations. The concept was simple: give each player in the band a single box with physical knobs and switches that could both sculpt their tones and deliver clean, long-range XLR signals out to a PA system or audio interface.

The V-Tone series is still going strong today, giving players of all budgets a convenient way to record and perform.

Behringer Vintage Series

It was around 2008 that the vintage pedal market began to take hold, and players were eagerly paying top dollar for classic stompboxes they couldn’t find at their neighborhood guitar marts. Enter: the Behringer Vintage Series of effects. These jumbo guitar pedals proudly touted old-school analog tech tucked inside folded metal enclosures to give players “new” and forgotten ways to liven up their sounds.

Exciting entries in the line included the VT911 Vintage Tube Overdrive and VT999 Vintage Tube Monster. These pedals came loaded with real 12AX7 preamp tubes to deliver amp-like distortion characteristics and coloration. There was also the VM1 Vintage Time Machine, a “deluxe” analog delay and vibrato capable of 550ms of IC-based repeats.

A top seller to this day remains the affordable VP1 Vintage Phaser, a smooth phase shifter with the soul of Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here and Radiohead’s OK Computer.

Behringer’s Standard Pedal Lineup

Soon after, Behringer landed on its greatest pedal triumph yet: the international launch of its standard pedal series between 2008 and 2009. It’s safe to say that this fleet of nearly 20 pedals had something for everybody — from the fan-frenzied SF300 Super Fuzz and TO800 Vintage Tube Overdrive to the best-in-class UV300 Ultra Vibrato and do-it-all FX600 Digital Multi-FX.

Why do players clamor for these pedals by the boardful, you may ask? Because inside these pedals’ economic plastic cases reside some impressive digital and analog circuits. Investing in smart efficiencies and quality where it counts has helped Behringer deliver real-deal tones to pedal aficionados without requiring a second mortgage.

Behringer Goes Boutique?

True to its mission to put great gear within the reach of every player, Behringer introduced a new “boutique” line of guitar pedals beginning in 2021. The DUAL-PHASE claims to be an authentic re-creation of a 1970s “dual phasor” effect that remains mythic for its deep levels of synchronized modulation and glitchy ring modulation. Another, the Octave Divider, celebrates Behringer’s rediscovery of a nearly forgotten analog sub-octave effect that guitar, bass, and synth lovers can’t get enough of.

What’s Next for Behringer Effects Pedals?

Behringer’s domination of the guitar and bass effects industry shows no signs of slowing. As for what’s in store for Behringer, the monolithic music and audio maker? Only time will tell. Stay tuned to Sweetwater as your trusted source for all the latest Behringer pedal developments.
