Band & Orchestra FAQs
What instruments are played in band?
Concert and symphonic bands are generally made up of woodwinds, brass instruments, and percussion. Orchestras typically include these instruments plus strings.
What instrument should my child play?
Consider physical fit, personality, and program needs. Common band instruments middle school students start on include flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. When in doubt: ask them! Meeting your child at the intersection of their interests and abilities is a great way to keep them invested in their instrument.
What’s the difference between student and intermediate instruments?
Student models prioritize durability and easy playability for beginners. Intermediate or step-up models typically add upgraded materials and keywork for players heading into high school or auditioned ensembles.
When should my child upgrade from a student instrument?
Many players move up around high school, when a director recommends it, or when the instrument starts limiting the repertoire they can comfortably play.
