What is a marimba?


The marimba belongs to the idiophone family of keyboard percussion instruments, meaning the hardwood bars themselves produce sound acoustically when struck with yarn-covered mallets. The marimba is larger than a xylophone and speaks in a warmer, deeper, lower tone. It's a common ensemble instrument that can be found in orchestras, marching band pits, and percussion ensembles all over the world. You'll also see marimbas used in solo performances, either played with two or four mallets.



How much does a marimba cost?


Smaller marimbas at Sweetwater begin at around the $1,600 mark for 3-octave models (at the time of this writing) and can approach $20,000 for concert-grade 5-octave models. As with any instrument, costlier models tend to sport more premium features, including rolling frames, exotic padauk or cherry wood bars, and harmonically consonant brass or aluminum resonators.
