How deep is a concert snare drum?

Concert, marching, and kit snares — what’s the difference?

Marching snare drums, on the other hand, are built for outdoor stadiums and parade routes. In other words: they’re made to be loud! These snares use special high-tension heads and hardware that allows them to be tuned tabletop-tight and mounted to a shoulder-worn drum carrier.

Kit snares — those included with or used behind a trap set — focus on achieving a specific character for a particular musical flavor. This might be the bark of a brass rimshot or the woof of an old bebop snare.

Can I use a drum set snare as a concert snare?

It depends on the needs of your music and ensemble. Remember: concert snare drums are created for response and versatility across a wide range of styles and dynamics, whereas kit snares are often built to “cut through” an ensemble.

Some kit snares fare better for crossover purposes than others. The Ludwig Black Beauty and Rogers Dyna-Sonic, for example, have been enjoyed by concert percussionists for decades. These snares transition well from the trap kit to the concert hall and back with minor modifications: head choice, technique, tuning, muffling, snare wires, and so on.

On the other hand, if your options are a TAMA Bell Brass “Terminator” or an SJC Jay Weinberg — snares tailored for high-volume, aggressive playing — they may not suit the dynamic requirements of your music as well as a true concert snare.
