Flugelhorn FAQs
What is a flugelhorn?
The earliest flugelhorns date back to 19th-century Germany and Austria, where they took the place of bugles in many regional military and concert bands. However, it wouldn’t be until some 100 years later when the flugelhorn was mass-produced by the Vincent Bach company at the dawn of the Jazz Age that the instrument really caught fire. The flugelhorn’s dark timbre and wider spread " voiced somewhere between a trumpet and French horn " gave jazz and orchestral composers an entirely new voice to write for. Today, the flugelhorn is a standard in Dixieland jazz and British-style brass ensembles, both as a lead and accompaniment instrument.
Flugelhorn vs. trumpet: what’s the difference?
Whereas a trumpet is made from uniform-bore tubing that expands at the bell, the flugelhorn’s tubing is conical; it begins narrow at the mouthpiece and rapidly expands in diameter, terminating in a wide bell often around 6 inches in diameter. These features give the flugelhorn a more forlorn tone and a wider spread compared to the trumpet’s focused brightness. Even so, both instruments handle with similar speed and precision, especially in their lower registers. In fact, some flugelhorns sold at Sweetwater, such as the Blessing BFH-1541RT, are built on trumpet valve systems, which makes them excellent transition horns for established trumpeters and cornet players.
What key is a flugelhorn in?
Almost every flugelhorn you’ll find at Sweetwater is a B♠instrument. This means a C keyed on a flugelhorn will sound a B♠concert pitch. Because it has this in common with standard trumpets, transposition of parts from a trumpet to a flugelhorn often requires little to no rearrangement.
Say, is it me, or does the opening to Animal Crossing sort of sound like a flugelhorn?
You are correct! The lead instrument featured on the title theme of Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch is indeed a sampled flugelhorn. YouTuber Panagiotis Karamanos does a great flugelhorn-only cover of the Animal Crossing theme on his Jupiter JFH1100R.
