About Cajons and Box Drums
In the exciting universe of percussion instruments, imagining an instrument more versatile than the cajon ("box drum") would be tough — especially for Latin-based music. The cajon's range of sounds is impressive and so organic that players of any skill level can develop their own tones and techniques. It's like having a simplified drum kit and percussion rack in one unassuming little box " that you can sit on! At Sweetwater, we find that our drumming customers love the versatility and wide range of percussive options that cajons confer on them.
Different Types of Cajons
These little box drums might appear nearly identical from model to model. But in fact, cajons vary widely in construction, materials, and setup. Some are very simple, with a couple of differently tuned resonant surfaces. Others offer multiple playing surfaces made from different materials (both organic and inorganic), as well as all kinds of extras that give each one its own distinct sound and vibe. Once you get into playing a cajon, don't be surprised if you soon find yourself with a small collection of them, each with its unique character.
In curating our selection of cajons, we have put a lot of effort into including a wide variety of designs to give you your choice of sounds and features. At the most basic end of the spectrum, check out our build-your-own cajon kits. These kits come with everything you need to build a high-quality instrument, including glue and sanding pads. In addition to being an economical way to get into cajon-playing, it is incredibly satisfying to create your own instrument, and you don't have to be a master craftsman to do it. Our kits are designed with the player in mind and are easily built by anybody with the most elementary woodworking skills.
Cajon Soundboards and Playing Surfaces
At the next level, we carry a veritable cornucopia of cajon choices. Select from cajons made from a variety of different tonewoods on their playing surfaces, including birch, black walnut, morado, and more. These not only sound great, but they also look amazing with gorgeously stained grain patterns, including spalted woods, flamed grains, and burled hardwoods. In addition to the playing surfaces, we carry a variety of cajons with distinctive sonic signatures. Some of our cajons come with internal adjustable snare wires for that great raspy sound; some even give you the option of disengaging the snares for a more earthy tone. If you're playing in a band with a drummer and electric instruments, have a look at our cajons with integrated electronics that allow you to plug directly into an amplifier or PA. Not only can you increase your volume, but you can easily mix the cajon's natural sound with modern tone enhancements by incorporating effects like delay and reverb and even other instrument voices.
Flamenco Cajons Vs. Peruvian Cajons
Flamenco cajons are characterized by a deep bass bloom and snare-like snap. This results from steel strings or snare wires mounted inside the drum. This makes Flamenco cajons popular for set drummers on busking outings or pick-up acoustic gigs. Peruvian cajons, on the other hand, have no internal snares and produce a cleaner, woodier tone that lends itself better to certain percussionists and musical styles.
