About Attenuators and Simulators


Are you tired of discovering that the FOH engineer has dropped your fader 20dB because your amp’s too loud, even after you’ve taken great care to set the controls for optimal tone? There are techniques and equipment designed to help you achieve excellent amp tone and maintain listener comfort in the same room as your rig. At Sweetwater, one of our favorite solutions is using an attenuator to take a white-hot amp signal and project it through speakers at a reasonable volume.


When you’re looking to attenuate your volume without changing the sound, there are various options and features for you to consider. If your principal goal is to achieve full-on tube amp breakup at reasonable volumes, then our selection includes first-rate units that do exactly that. With an attenuator in place, you can dial in as much or as little attenuation as you like, from no attenuation to total signal squashing. The effect is that of adding a master volume knob to your speaker cabinet if that were possible! Many of our attenuators have great extras like direct output and phase adjustment.


From attenuators, we move on to the world of speaker cabinet simulators. These are amazing tools for recording, and there are a couple of different ways to incorporate them. Some units take a speaker-level signal directly from your amp head and simulate a variety of popular speaker cabinet configurations and individual speakers, like Greenbacks, Creambacks, or alnico Blues, before sending the signal onto your recording device. Many of the units in our selection also include power amp tube simulations, giving you an expansive sonic palette to choose from. You can even choose units that accept hi-Z signals directly from your pedalboard, basically giving you the ability to dial up any amp and cabinet combo you want. This is an incredible feature if you do a lot of recording in places like apartments, where low volume equals good neighbor relations. Now you can give your recordings a huge amp tone without that annoying sound of the downstairs tenant pounding on the ceiling.


The world of attenuators and simulators presents a dizzying array of options and features. Some are designed to enhance your amp’s tone, while others are more geared toward getting a superior live sound with no amp at all.
