Praise for the sales engineer
I forgot to mention in my review of this Focal Sub One 8-inch Powered Studio Subwoofer, that it was my sale engineer, Andrew Plassman, who recommended it. I would never have known to purchase this if he hadn't recognized it was what I was looking for. When I told him the sound I was getting from my Focal speakers was bland, he said a subwoofer was what was needed. I'm incredibly grateful for his recommendation and knowledge. A big "thank you" to Andrew!
A Studio Necessity
In my ignorance, I always thought subwoofers were only for home stereo and TV applications. I was wrong. This Focal Sub One 8-inch Powered Studio Subwoofer adds so much depth to what I'm hearing in my small studio, that I wish I had known about it years earlier. It literally makes the sound come alive, when before, without a subwoofer, it was drab -- even with Focal speakers. This subwoofer pushes what I'm hearing into greatness. This is a major, major enhancement to my original music and what I'm hearing.
It breaks the rules…
stereo input, mono output. The drivers face away from each other, but both reflex ports are parallel and face forwards. If this creates a cardioid sub, then the Focal Sub One has the ability to defy the geometry of your room. The opposing polarities of the drivers might make the corners to either side of the room not matter as much acoustically, and create a really focused sweet spot in the unification of the reflex ports. Whatever, I might be all wrong, but it's hard to imagine a better sounding sub. It's ridiculously powerful, super focused and defined, and has never even vaguely chuffed. I'd buy it again if the price was double what it is.
Perfect For My Setup
1st and foremost thanks Alan Finkbeiner for always giving me sound advice when it comes to purchasing the right equipment
The Sub One fits my studio perfectly. Now I can take the load off of my satellite monitors. You will definitely hear the low frequencies accurately. Be sure to calibrate it to your room. If possible use Sonarworks to calibrate.
JUST PERFECT
For EDM music composition I believe a subwoofer is most helpful.
I was looking for one - read good reviews about it.
This subwoofer has a LOT of power: mid settings does it for me !
Would buy it again in a flash.
Superb quality - have a look at the YT video of the Focal factory in France: those are almost handmade.
Very depth and detail accuracy Low End
Had them for a few days and Maaaaan blown away by the sound quality and option for different flavor you can set for less or more 808 Ho Lp Sc Phase knob and more definitely recommend.
A Great Purchase
The Bass frequencies are truly popping out this little beast. I'm getting more definition in the bottom than before which is exactly what a Sub is for. However Focal has a way of not intruding on your ears but complementing them.
Perfect Match for Shape 65s
I was a bit skeptical about setting up a subwoofer, but it was a great decision! With the Sub One, Shape 65s, and Sonar Works I am enjoying near perfect mix translation. Simple to set up. Used the 90hz crossover switch on the Sub One and the Shape65s, play some low end noise or 90hz sine wave, move phase knob and listen for where it is weakest, then flip the phase switch and you are done! The biggest benefit isn't even the low end extension; it is the extra clarity I'm getting from the Shape 65s when they don't have to push the lows. Basically turns your 2-way speakers into 3-way
