About Phono Cartridges and Styli

Music-makers feel a special connection to the part of an instrument that bonds soul and machine. On a guitar, it’s the pick dancing across the strings that generates inductance in the pickups. On a snare drum, it’s the drumstick setting off sympathetic vibrations across the head, shell, and hardware.

The same could be said for the cartridge and stylus on your turntable’s tonearm. These components are ground zero for your audio chain. They have the distinguished task of translating the microscopic grooves of a vinyl record into sound waves that rouse the body and awaken the soul. But, in time, frequent use can cause the stylus tip to wear out, causing poor playing and risking damage to your vinyl.

Are you searching for a new stylus or cartridge to transform your turntable response? Sweetwater carries a curated selection of top cartridges and styli for vinyl lovers to turntablists from the brands you trust most: Ortofon, Audio-Technica, Reloop, Numark, Pioneer DJ, and more.

What Do the Stylus and Cartridge Do?

Your turntable’s stylus and cartridge act much like the plectrum and pickups, respectively, of an electric guitar. The cone-shaped stylus (or needle) makes physical contact with the spiral grooves of your vinyl record to track the frequencies, durations, and amplitudes of the audio source. The electromagnetic phono cartridge transmits these signals into your phono preamp and down the signal chain to reach your ears as sound.

Does a Cartridge Make a Difference in My Sound?

A phono cartridge is a transducer. So, just like our favorite speakers and microphones, the sonic signature of your cartridge can have a profound impact on your playback. Some customers describe different cartridges as sounding warm or bright, musical or analytical, boosted or natural. But, ultimately, how a cartridge sounds in your setup depends largely on your gear and your ears. How Often Should I Replace My Stylus?

Signs it’s time to replace your phono cartridge’s stylus could include:

  • • Increasingly muddy, distorted, or noisy playback
  • • Poor needle contact with vinyl grooves
  • • Skipping or jumping across the record surface
  • • A visibly bent or jagged profile

Even if you don’t notice the adverse effects of a worn stylus, it’s a good idea to think about replacing yours every 200-to-2,000 hours of playback, depending on the quality of your needle. Using a poor or worn stylus doesn’t just hurt your sound — it could potentially hurt your vinyl, too.

Performance Styli Level Up Your DJ Sets

The physical connection that gives DJ turntables their precision response involves quite a bit of friction. And, eventually, even a premium stylus is going to wear out. When it’s time to replace yours, count on Sweetwater to keep you in the game with our fast, free shipping so you can be back in action in time for the gig.
