Meet the World’s Leading Live Vocal Mic: The Shure SM58!

If this is your first Shure SM58 dynamic microphone, then congratulations! You’re about to discover why it’s the most popular vocal microphone on the planet. In fact, every serious studio and live sound rig should have several SM58s. Why? Because the Shure SM58 gives you three of the most important things a microphone can deliver: quality, consistency, and durability. In your hand or on a stand, in your studio or onstage, gig after gig, show after show, session after session, Sweetwater engineers concur: the Shure SM58 dynamic microphone will never let you down.

Quality sound for any source

What makes the Shure SM58 a legend? Let's start with the fact that you can stick one in front of any vocalist (and most instruments, for that matter) and get excellent results. It's a fact — even though it's best known today for its near indestructibility, no one would have cared about the SM58 in the first place if it didn't sound amazing. The secret to the SM58 mic's sound is its critically tuned frequency response, which cuts out low-end rumble and adds a noticeable rise in the upper-mid frequencies. This deliberate presence peak adds warmth and clarity to your vocals and lets you get the most out of a wide range of sources, including guitar cabinets, brass, and many other instruments. So, if you're wondering if the SM58 is still relevant after 60 years in the spotlight, the answer is a resounding "yes!"

Consistent performance you can count on

Here’s something you may not have known about the Shure SM58. This handheld microphone is built to very tight standards, meaning an SM58 will sound like an SM58. You can mix and match and add more SM58s to your collection and always get the sound you expect. What’s more, they all have the same focused cardioid polar pattern. That’s great onstage, where you have to worry about bleed from the mains causing feedback. It also lets you get solid isolation between your vocals and instruments — a bonus in the studio.

Extreme durability for a lifetime of use

We can’t mention the trusty SM58 without talking about its legendary toughness. Drop it from a skyscraper, run over it with a box truck, freeze it, drown it, bury it in soft peat for three months — it’s all been done to the SM58, repeatedly (there are YouTube videos to prove it). The best part is that not only will this heroic mic continue to function after serious abuse, but it will also sound the same as it did before. Now, do you think a little thing like the normal wear and tear of stage life is any match for your SM58? No way! Buy a Shure SM58, and you’ve got a mic you can put in your will.

Shure SM58 Features:

  • The most popular handheld dynamic microphone in the world
  • Legendary Shure quality, ruggedness, and reliability in every mic
  • Perfect for use onstage or in your studio
  • Presence peak adds warmth and clarity to vocals and removes low-frequency rumble from all instruments
  • Cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source, minimizes background noise, and provides high gain before feedback
  • Internal pneumatic shockmount system cuts down handling noise
  • Unidyne III cartridge is famous for withstanding shocks, drops, and neglect
  • Effective, built-in spherical wind and pop filter reduces breath noise and plosives
  • Includes break-resistant stand adapter that rotates 180°

Reviews

Nothing else needed
There is a reason why most studios, bands, live music venues and everything in between owns at least two of these. The SM58 is one of the (if not the) most reliable microphone for mostly every single one of your needs. There are many niche brands that will sound a tad better (Sennheiser and Telefunken come to mind), but the sturdiness and reliability of a shure is hard to be matched.

Dependable Mic
I do sound for small bands and these mics are very dependable and sound great. The work for vocals and instruments. A good buy.
Music background: Dj/Live Sound
Best Dynamic Mic ever
This mix is amazing. It will always be a classic. Still putting it through its paces but it sounds great.
Music background: Singer/songwriter, composer, producer
Still a Classic "Swiss Army Knife"
I've used SM58s countless times in clubs over the years, so I finally decided to purchase one. I A/B compared it with my SM57 with the Shure AWS windscreen on the 57. The 57 was warmer and a bit more detailed, but the 58 handled plosives far better. I'm still experimenting with it for rock vocals in the studio, but it will be going into my backpack for outdoor gigs. I won't need to worry about wind blowing into the mic.

It's a great all-purpose mic that has earned its reputation. Shure still builds quality gear.
Music background: Pro singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist
Sm58 and Sweetwater
I recently purchased some items from Sweetwater that didn't work out for me. Nothing wrong just a compatibility problem with hearing aids. Max at Sweetwater cheerfully issued a return and refund....no hassle at all. So I used the refund for a pair of SM 58 mics. What can I say about the SM 58 that hasn't been said a million times already? Very good mic, indestructible industry standard workhorse.
What can I say about Sweetwater's customer service? The best!
Music background: Acoustic guitar player since the 1970s, songwriter.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Years ago, I was driving a pickup truck over-loaded with gear down a Texas highway en route to a gig. We hit a bump, our mic case flew open, and two SM58's bounced onto the pavement going 65 MPH. Amazingly, not only did the mic's still work, but their sound wasn't affected one bit (the grille, on the other hand...). Almost every gigging musician has a story like this, and that's part of what makes the SM58 an enduring classic!

This is the mic I will be using after the nuclear holocaust happens because it will be one of the only things left on earth that still works.
