About Keyboards & Synthesizers
Choosing the right music keyboard or synthesizer is a big decision. Whether you’re buying your first keyboard or adding another instrument to your music-making collection, we’re here to help you navigate the vast array of choices you’ll find on these pages. To get you started, here are a few points you might want to consider when choosing your ideal electronic keyboard or synthesizer.
Piano Keyboards
A great place to start is a piano keyboard. It’s an ideal instrument for those just beginning their musical journey. Whether you want an acoustic grand piano for your living room, an acoustic upright piano for your music classroom, or a maintenance-free digital piano for your house of worship, Sweetwater can hook you up with the right music keyboard for your needs.
Synthesizers
If you’re into EDM or vintage synth-pop music, you’ll need a synthesizer keyboard. The first consideration would be polyphony. Classic monophonic subtractive keyboard synthesizers can only play one note at a time, making them a natural choice for fat synth basses and searing leads. Many modern synth keyboards are polyphonic, so you can play chords on them.
Do you want a synth with a music keyboard? If you’re already using a MIDI controller with virtual instrument plug-ins, adding a hardware synth module to your setup can expand your sonic horizons.
Electric Organs
Perhaps you’re a fan of the legendary Jimmy Smith, who helped popularize the B-3 organ with his unique brand of instrumental soul-jazz fusion. Sweetwater has a comprehensive selection of electric organs from noted manufacturers that include Hammond, Nord, Roland, Crumar, and Yamaha.
Keyboard Workstations
Maybe you’d like to “have it all” in one musical keyboard. You’d be looking at keyboard workstations from Korg, Kurzweil, Yamaha, or Roland. If you want to compose and arrange all within one streamlined keyboard, check out our portable and arranger keyboard category. Yamaha and Casio are the big players in this space.
Keyboard Amplifiers, Accessories, & More at Sweetwater

Whether you’re shopping for keyboard stands, pedals, benches, keyboard covers, gig bags, or cases, we’ve got you covered.
Keyboards & Synthesizers FAQ
What’s the Difference Between an Analog vs. Digital Synth?
Analog synthesizers use voltage-controlled circuits to shape sound. Many players describe the result as warm, punchy, and responsive to subtle playing dynamics. Digital synthesizers use numerical processing to generate waveforms, which gives them greater tuning stability, broader sound variety, and often a lower price for a comparable voice count. Hybrid instruments combine both approaches, pairing analog filters with digital oscillators or vice versa. Neither type is objectively better; the right choice depends on the sounds you want to make and the workflow you prefer.
What’s the Difference Between a Digital Piano vs. a Keyboard Synthesizer vs. a Workstation?
A digital piano is built to replicate the feel and sound of an acoustic piano as closely as possible. Most models offer a weighted, hammer-action keyboard, high-quality piano samples, and built-in speakers, making them a strong choice for classical study, home practice, or house of worship use.
A synthesizer, by contrast, is a sound-design instrument. It generates tones electronically using oscillators, filters, and amplifiers, and it gives you hands-on control over the character of the sound.
A keyboard workstation combines synthesis or sample playback with an onboard sequencer, so you can write and arrange without connecting to a computer.
What’s the Difference Between MIDI Controllers vs. Standalone Keyboard Synthesizers?
A MIDI controller sends note and performance data to software instruments or external hardware but produces no sound on its own. It’s the right choice if you already use a DAW with virtual instruments and want a physical keyboard to play them. A standalone keyboard synthesizer generates its own sound and works without a computer, which makes it more practical for live performance and for players who prefer hardware-based workflows.
