TR-808 in a Boutique Series Module

Roland's TR-08 reimagines the world's most famous drum machine as a Boutique Series module. Fire it up, and you'll experience the same sizzling hi-hats, snappy snare, clicky rimshot, and unmistakable cowbell as the original. And yes — the legendary bass drum is in there in all its booming glory. But the TR-08 is more than a simple retread of a vintage 808. It also adds modern touches to the classic formula, like a sequencer with 16 sub-steps per step, a track-selectable trigger out, an unobtrusive LED display, and USB-MIDI. The TR-08 is the perfect blend of obsessive attention to detail, respect for legacy, and modern performance.

The TR-808 — legendary boom and sizzle

For the TR-08, Roland modeled their legendary TR-808 right down to the component level using their proprietary Analog Circuit Behavior technology. The TR-808 was originally introduced in 1980 as an easy-to-program drum machine. Unfortunately, its unrealistic drum sounds were a bit more than the establishment could handle, and the 808 was discontinued in 1983. But then hip-hop crawled out from the underground, and the TR-808's robotic rhythms and speaker-blowing bass drum were elevated to mythical status. After it hit the mainstream, the 808 was featured prominently in recordings made by artists such as Marvin Gaye ("Sexual Healing") and Afrika Bambaataa ("Planet Rock"). These days, the TR-808 is a staple in electronic, dance, and hip-hop genres.

The original Roland TR-808.

A vintage drum machine for modern beat makers

The original TR-808 is a classic, but its limited feature set restricts its usefulness — especially for modern music production. The TR-08 expands on the original's performance with practical modern touches. Its 16-step sequencer has 16 sub-steps, allowing you to create detailed snare fills and intricate hi-hat rolls. A track-selectable trigger out makes integrating the TR-08 with your other electronic instruments easy. An unobtrusive LED display yields fine control over tempo and shuffle. You also have compression, gain, tune, and pan for selected instruments and can step-program or tap in your parts in real time without changing modes. At Sweetwater, we especially appreciate how the TR-08 sends and receives MIDI control messages for everything. There's even USB-MIDI!

Always wanted a drum machine
As a genX, I've had a deep love of dance music and I always wanted a drum machine. Found the Roland Boutique series and was excited to find a smaller and affordable version of the classic 808. The tr-08 seems made for me size wise as it's not as intimidating to a beginner who wants a classic sound. As I am just learning, I'm watching the various YouTube videos on how to use it as I think the user guide could stand to be tweaked toward teaching more towards a beginner. Also, the instructions for installing the drivers isn't all it could be. The instructions say the drivers will auto install. Not for me it didn't. My pc wouldn't install it properly but once I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, it worked as it should. I am using/ learning REAPER for my DAW so I can record from my first beat. I want to record to see my progression as I get better at it. It's a great little machine, seems solid, and lots of switches to tweak for whatever you want to make. One of my favorite musicians says to learn everything about what your machine and you can do almost anything. It's what I plan to do. Wish me luck!

There's a reason the Original TR-808 can't be recreated by Roland
Just want to respond to some comments with people badgering Roland to "reissue" the real thing. They can't. Reason ? The TR-808 was a mistake. Maybe "mistake" is the wrong word. It was a defective product. Roland didn't mean to put "faulty" transistors in it at the time ! Even if you could go to a 3rd World country and demand some factory there create a faulty (out of spec) transistor, it would probably take a 1st world factory to exactly replicate those faulty transistors to replicate the garbage transistors that the original TR-808 had ! Maybe Capt Kirk & Scotty might be able replicate those transistors some time in the distance butthat ain't happening today. Sorry. Here's a little bit of history. In the 80s, the Roland TR-808 drum machine had a list price of US$ (This price translates to roughly $ in 2023 dollars, accounting for inflation). Roland likes to say the commercial failure was due to people not being ready for the sound... er no. People who were messing around with drum machines back then found out about the faulty transistors and no one was going to pay $ for something that had garbage components. When it got replaced by the TR-909 the following year. The re-sale prices just dropped so low a lot of musicians were now able to afford the 808. And we know what those musicians did with it :-D So stop bashing Roland. Even Uli Behrenger hasn't been able to find garbage transistors to match the old TR-808 lol :-D
Excellent Healing
Every time I touch this thing I get goosebumps. I mean it's basically the same as what was used by Music Legends to create unforgettable tracks. Oddly enough, it gives me the same pause as I felt when I sat at Stevie Wonder's piano at the Motown museum in Detroit. Extremely pleased with the usability and percussion lines i have created. This is all I need.

Simply put, modern electronic music wouldn't exist without Roland. Many of the electronic musicians here at Sweetwater cut our teeth on TR Rhythm machines and fondly remember programming our first TB-303s. We owe a good part of our careers to this amazing and innovative company. It's been fun to watch and grow right alongside Roland, as they've introduced wave after wave of revolutionary keyboards, digital pianos, and more. For example, Roland's V-Drum Kits continuously redefine the possibilities of electronic drums, beginning with SuperNATURAL technology to the latest Prismatic Sound Modeling. We're huge fans, and we'd love to tell you all about them. Whether you want a pocket-sized synth or a cutting-edge video mixer, if Roland makes it, then Sweetwater is 100% behind it.
