The Perfect Starter Strat for Budding Rockers

The Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Junior HSS gives budding musicians a superb gateway into the world of electric guitar. The Affinity Strat Junior HSS features a lightweight, comfortably contoured poplar body, which is bolstered by a C-shaped neck and an easy-playing Indian laurel fingerboard. And a versatile trio of pickups, one humbucker and two single-coils, serves up a salmagundi of tones that cover blues, classic rock, and even metal with equal assurance. The days when new players had to settle for a barely playable pawn shop guitar are long gone. Thanks to the Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster Junior HSS, aspiring guitar heroes can benefit from a quality instrument right out of the gate.

That Strat neck!

The Strat neck is legendary for its unique feel and response. The C profile bolt-on maple neck on the Affinity delivers vintage feel and playability. The Indian laurel fingerboard features 20 medium-jumbo frets for comfortable, nearly effortless chording and smooth lead runs — ideal for long nights of jamming and performing. Plus, your leads will soar given the expressive opportunities offered by the synchronous tremolo bridge.

Versatile trio of pickups

The Affinity Series Stratocaster Junior HSS has been wired for tone with a mind-blowing array of sound shaping at your fingertips. The two single-coil pickups in the neck and middle positions arm you with all the classic, punchy tone you'd expect from single-coils. A solo humbucker in the bridge position brings the crunch and growl when you want to get a bit heavier. With a 5-position blade switch and Volume and Tone controls, Sweetwater guitarists have unlocked a wide variety of sounds to dial in along with near-infinite stylistic colorings to explore.

Reviews

Wow... Fantastic and short scale
I have ulnar issues with my left hand. The short scale on this guitar 24" allows me to work on bar chords again. So for me the scale length is a huge factor. Even better though is setting it up with the Fender 9-42 250 series nickel plated steel strings. I set it up with a fully floating tremolo and it held tune an played fantastic however with the 3 springs the tremolo was harder to work with than I wanted so I reduced the spring count to 1 and now the tremolo is sensitive but it can do dive bombs without excessive force being required. It still returns to in tune with the normal tremolo issues with the G string being slightly off sometimes. All in all a fantastic playing guitar for someone with smaller hands or hand issues like me.

I got a demo / return and it was absolutely perfect with no finish issues, no fret sprout, and a decent setup right out of the box. It sounds fantastic on all pickup positions. It maintains tuning if you set it up correctly even with the tremolo fully floating with all the stock hardware. Extremely light compared to most guitars so younger / smaller players will have less weight issues. If you have back issues you will like this too. I don't usually modify my instruments and this one is no different. The hardware, the pickups the entire guitar is solid. If you are trying to dial in a tone this guitar should get you there. If not before you change anything try a graphic equalizer at various locations in your signal chain. I bet you will be able to dial in that tone in your head without spending tons of money for pickups or other hardware.

This is a fantastic Axe.

The bad news is now I need to check out Mustangs, Jaguars and Duo Sonics...........
Fantastic Guitar
I immediately replaced the 9's with 11's - personal preference. The tremolo is not great, goes out of tune when used. I don't use the wang bar - just like the tone of having the springs. The build quality of this guitar is great - I'm very pleased with the purchase. I just replaced the pickups today (Seymour Duncan guy) - I figured that would be necessary, and it was. Honestly, if you are looking for a short scale "strat" this guitar is it. It will take some upgrades to make it "playable", but that is just my opinion. There is really no other option to get a 24" scale strat, which is unfortunate. This is currency my favorite guitar!
Great Guitar
I have shoulder issues and wanted a shorter guitar. So I purchased the mini strat without knowing that there was a strat junior being made. I was not happy with the tone or feel of the mini strat so I started looking to see if I could put a squire mustang neck on a mini strat. While on a forum I saw that people were talking about the Squire Strat Junior. So I searched for it and ended up purchasing it from another site. Wow what a difference. This is a perfect size guitar for anyone. The only drawback for some might be it only having 20 frets. This guitar is very easy to play. No sharp frets and the intonation was perfect. I did not have to set this guitar up at all. Squier did a fantastic job with this. I assumed that I might have to change the pickups to get the sound I was looking for. But no. It actually sounds great. Just in case someone is looking for the length. I measured it and from head to toe it is 36 1/4" long. I own a full size Fender Strat and I actually prefer the size and sound of this guitar over the Fender.
Music background: I play guitar and sing in a cover band that plays new and old country along with classic and southern rock.
Strat Jr.
Having small hands, I can honestly say this guitar is the Stratocaster is the one I've always wanted to own. It arrived in great shape right out of the box! Thanks, Sweetwater, for such a great deal on a fine instrument!
Music background: Musician since 1964.
