A 6-string Bass for the Seasoned Musician

The Ibanez Bass Workshop SRC6MS is built from an exciting blend of tonewoods. An okoume body delivers a light, bright tone with an articulate high end and tight low end. A 5-piece jatoba/walnut neck makes a fine tonal complement while supplying excellent comfort and stability. The SRC6MS's multi-scale rosewood fingerboard offers optimal tension and playability. Experience superior intonation and vibration transference, thanks to a Mono-Rail bridge. A duo of Bartolini BH2 dual-coil pickups yields incredible depth and clarity, a 3-band EQ allows for further sonic sculpting, and a 3-way midrange switch rounds out the SRC6MS's controls. To top it all off, the Bass Workshop SRC6MS features black hardware for a sleek, eye-catching look.

Better comfort, tension, and tone

Multi-scale frets are an exciting new trend in high-end bass guitar design. They yield a longer scale on the bass side of the instrument and a shorter scale on the treble side, offering you better intonation and more consistent tension and attack from string to string. And while getting used to them may look like it will be quite an undertaking, Sweetwater bassists insist that it's a very natural transition. And the better intonation, consistent string tension, and more open tone far outweigh any difference from other basses.

Bartolini BH2 pickups deliver full and balanced tone

Bartolini BH2 pickups maintain a superb balance between the Bass Workshop SRC6MS's clarity and depth. They provide complexity and warmth in the mids and low-end depth that won't wash out. Long-blade pole pieces allow these dual-coil pickups to offer hum-free single-coil-style character and consistency. When you want to sculpt your SRC6MS's tone, just reach for the 3-band EQ. This active equalizer delivers wide frequency-range adjustments on each band. There's also a balance control to dial in just the right amount of each pickup. Whether you want round R&B throb or responsive thumb-technique punch, the SRC6MS delivers.

Mono-Rail bridge for ultimate string isolation

The Mono-Rail bridge installed on the Bass Workshop SRC6MS solves the issue of too much string cross-talk some other basses struggle with. When you play a string, sympathetic vibrations can set the other strings into motion. But by separating the bridge into independent "mini bridges," the Mono-Rail maximizes vibration transfer without interference from the other strings. Ibanez goes so far as to call the Mono-Rail, "the ultimate bridge for bass string isolation." Each bridge is independently and securely locked down to the body for maximum vibration transfer without interference.

Ibanez Bass Workshop SRC6MS 6-string Multi-Scale Bass Guitar Features:

  • Okoume body delivers a light, bright tone with an articulate high end and tight low end
  • 5-piece jatoba/walnut neck makes a fine tonal complement and supplies excellent comfort and stability
  • Multi-scale rosewood fingerboard offers optimal tension and playability
  • Mono-Rail bridge ensures complete string isolation and maximum sustain per string

  • Shape your tone with an active 3-band EQ, complete with balancer for added versatility

Reviews

Does SRC6MS chugs?
Yes, it is. But there's a nuance
If you find this guitar because you need something to play some low stuff between Drop E and depths of hell (Hi, Loathe), so you're at the right place.
First of all, all the promos says, that it's a bass. And it's true: all the electronics is 100% for bass. But the funny thing is that if you turn the "EQ Bypass switch" off - magically bass-VI become a baritone guitar which could make some nasty low-tuned noises. And the problem is that it's extremely non-obvious.
From the perspective of quality: Frets are smooth, neck is comfortable, switches work pretty good, etc etc.
As a lazy guitar player who tired of 27" guitars with spaghetti-080strings in Drop E I totally satisfied. As a lazy bassist who don't want switch Bass VI and go to take my bass from other side of the room I totally satisfied too.
P.S. Special thanks to YouTube channel "ArnoldPlaysGuitar" for explaining switch-trick and David John Levy for recommending me this guitar after one of Unprocessed's shows.
This is the most fun instrument I own
This is a very unique and challenging instrument. It truly does not play quite like a guitar or a bass although it could serve as both in a composition. It's scale length and sleek design makes it feel more expressive and lightweight then a standard bass but the string spacing makes it much harder to play finger styles on. The string thickness and bass heavy tone makes it feel more rhythm/groove oriented and slightly less melodic then a standard guitar. It's differences and limitations force you to get creative in your approach to playing it.
The tone is thick, clear, and very flexible, especially with the active electronics engaged. It leans much more towards sounding like a bass guitar but if you dial back the lows and crank the mids and highs you can get more guitar sounding tones out of it. You can easily get gnarly metal/punk or smooth jazzy/funky tones out of it.
The only flaw I have found in the instrument itself is that the low E string is very buzzy, similar to the low string of many 5 string basses. I'm sure it could be fixed with a thicker string gauge, but it doesn't bother me when I'm playing through an amp.
Overall, this is an exceptionally fun and inspiring instrument to jam and compose on. I have played it every day since I got it a few weeks ago and don't see myself getting bored of it or even truly getting used to playing it any time soon. For those who understand this reference, it is the Dark Souls of guitars haha.
If you're looking for something different, this may just be the instrument for you.
I like this bass vi way more than I expected.
The bass vi is a pretty odd instrument. I wasnt sure what I was going to do with it, I just knew I wanted one having played the first non multiscale version and loving the feel.

Having never played a multiscale, I was unsure how I would like it. Rest assured it's so easy to transition to one it didn't take any time or adjustments from me. It's fully ergonomic and all hand positions are very natural.

As an instrument, it is very much more a guitar than a bass as far as playing is concerned. Tuned an octave below guitar in E standard it feels a bit floppy. I settled with F standard tuning to match my baritone gretsch which is tuned to A# standard.

It sounds very nice clean and through bass amps, but I really find it shines with some power amp based crunch on the bridge pickup through guitar amps like soldano, blackstar st james, and the hovercraft amp I have. The chunk is massive. It does doom and sludge rock naturally.

The fretboard is fantastic and feels very well made. Intonation is already fine, but the mono rail bridge setup is very nice and allows for individual string setup. It has a nice preamp built in, and it sounds good, but I am getting more mileage out of the src6ms with the preamp switch off. I've just been using the amps to shape the tone and it works great without coming across as overly boomy. Eventually I may get lighter strings and tune up a bit more, or go the opposite direction and get beefier strings. There is not a ton of string spacing to allow a low .125 to ring, so chording with fat strings may not sound great. Time will tell.

All in all this is a very nice addition to my studio, and while I didn't have a specific use for it when I bought it, I have made a couple tracks layering 5 string bass, bass vi, baritone guitar, electric guitar, and 3/4 scale guitar into a sort of orchestral guitar section arrangement that is very nice, textured, and deep.

I don't expect I'll ever sell this one. It is far too fun and interesting. I will probably end up expanding my bass vi collection instead, picking up the fender and Harley Benton versions.

As always, Sweetwater service was on point. I am always confident that whatever I buy will be a good example of the instrument. I've never had broken knobs, faulty electronics, or any other guitar center style issues.

An absolute JOY to play!
I recieved this bass today, played it for a few hours, and took it straight to my gig. I had an absolute blast using it! As a straight-up electric bass, it sounds great! Throaty, clear bottom, crisp top end, and enough tweakable mids to dial in all kinds of goodness. I used a pick and my fingers and both techniques were easily fascilitated. Palm muting with the pick yielded some old-school Carol Kaye sweetness! Thrwoing in some triads and full chords was the icing on the cake. Thank you, Sweetwater, as always, for sending a bass that was battle-ready right out of the box. I will be adding this instrument to my go-to gig machines. I'd give it 6 Stars, if I could!
So good I bought 2!
I see these as short scale basses. Added a low B and this thing slays!

I bought 2 of these from Sweetwater and defretted one of them and it sounds fantastic! Highly recommended!
