About Capos
What exactly is a capo, and why do you need one? Capos clamp down around the fingerboard at a certain fret to shorten the length of the vibration of the strings. Basically, your guitar capo acts like a movable and adjustable nut — you can move it anywhere up the guitar neck and impact your guitar's tuning. Capos will bind all (or some) strings simultaneously, effectively creating a movable nut. With a guitar capo, all open strings will play in higher tones than when the capo's not on the fingerboard. That's why it's so important to mount the capo immediately behind the desired fret to ensure the strings are correctly pressed.
Said another way, guitar players use capos to add a special color to their sound or transpose to new keys on the fly. Capos also expand tonal possibilities by adding creativity to even simple parts.
Types of Capos
Capos differ in how they release tension on the guitar strings. Squeezing-type capos apply constant tension. These are so easy to use that you can apply and move them in seconds.
Other capos are able to release gradual, adjustable tension. These adjustable capos fall into two categories. First, you have the capos that can be used with just one hand. You just squeeze them around the guitar neck until you achieve the desired sound. You'll notice that these are well-balanced and quite neatly designed. They have an internal locking mechanism so that, as you begin to squeeze, they lock and not release. This allows you to gradually squeeze and listen to your guitar strings until you squeeze just hard enough to get those clear notes. When you need to remove them from the neck, all you have to do is hit a tiny lever on their back.
The second kind of guitar capos that release gradual tension have a tension screw on their back that you handle to apply tension. As you handle it, the screw presses a little bracket against the back of the guitar. This brings in its front lever and slowly puts more and more pressure on the guitar.
Which Capo Is Right for You?
Ultimately, your choice of guitar capos boils down to personal preference. Once you've decided on a type, make sure it matches your type of guitar, whether you're a classical player or folk strummer. We also carry capos for banjos, ukuleles, and mandolins.
