Beautiful guitar

By Sweetwater Customer from ME on August 3, 2023

This is a well made guitar. Very affordable price point. It didn't fit my needs, but that is no reflection on the instrument.

Impressive tenor guitar for little money

By Bob Bowker from Maine on October 28, 2020 Music Background: Multiple instrument hacker of keyboard, banjo, mandolin, guitar, drums, accordion

I have owned a tenor banjo for many years and thought it would be fun to try tenor guitar. Hey, for the money, it's not a huge risk, right? I must say, I am very impressed with the Ibanez PFT2. It has a nice tone, and it's surprisingly loud for a small guitar. I've had this guitar for almost a year now, and have thought about upgrading. but I don't think a guitar costing 4 times as much would sound that much better. Anyway, I would highly recommend this guitar for someone getting into a tenor. It's so easy to play, I'm surprised more people don't take it up.

Nice Tenor Guitar for the price point! Great for hammering out new and interesting melodies and tunes! You couldnt buy the wood for this Guitar for...! Let alone have it come out as well! Thanks to Ian

Wow!!!! Awesome Tenor Guitar

By Jobrazen from Mansfield, Ohio on March 11, 2016 Music Background: Semi-Pro

I play acoustic guitar and I have a Seagull, Washburn, Takamine, Larrivee, and a few others. I have played for over 20 years in bands and solo. So take my word for it, the Ibanez PFT2 tenor guitar sounds so good and loud! And for the size it is really unbelievable. It is roughly the same size as the Little Martin that Ed Sheeran plays. I originally was going to buy one of those but I didn't and just got the case. The PFT2 fits perfectly in the Gator case for the Little Martin. The body wood is very thick and heavy like an old Guild acoustic. The neck is short and skinny obviously but it does have an adjustable truss rod. Granted it is made in China but for the price the quality is really good. And the great thing is that there are so many different tunings you can use on it. Plus the sound hole is big enough to take an acoustic pickup. I promise you will love this little thing.

Good

Great guitar for the price, good quality, great sound, very sturdy, took a few days to adjust to the climate, but after a week tuning is only needed after some decent use. Very happy with my purchase

Excellent Value, Minor Cosmetic Issues

By Bruce Ward from Houston, TX on January 25, 2018 Music Background: Amateur plunker

Setup was great right out of the box. 7th fret (perfect fifth) intonations, C string (G-G), G (D-D), D (A-A) were spot-on after initial tuning and warmup. I tested the guitar for a few days in standard CGDA tuning, and then had it professionally setup, dropping a perfect fourth to GDAE octave mandolin tuning using 40-30-20-12 gauges. Intonation is excellent even with the heavier strings, and I may go slightly heavier on the low end and lighten up the high end. I am impressed with the inclusion of a compensated saddle and bone nut on such an inexpensive instrument.

Rating gets dinged 1/2 point for minor cosmetics: One small black speck on the lacquer next to the sound hole and a couple of ripples in the pick guard indicating an uneven application of adhesive. Not worth the time to send back for a replacement.

If you have ever wanted to investigate the possibilities of the tenor guitar, this is your best starting point.

Better than Expected

By Mark Butterworth from Klickitat, WA on July 11, 2022

The price on this Tenor Guitar makes it a golden bargain. Clean, bright tone with pretty good action.

Nut and bridge are a bit off, but the instrument is totally playable. I'm using CGDA tuning (it comes with DGBE string set) so purchased a set of correct strings for the tuning I prefer. Played well with the supplied strings as well.

I really like this guitar, and if it weren't for the fact that the nut and bridge need adjusting, I'd give it 5 stars.

Glad I purchased it, and would recommend, especially to newer players.

Nice guitar for the price

By Matthew from Waterville, ME on June 21, 2022 Music Background: I took 10 years of cello lessons as a kid and have been playing guitar for 37 years.

This is my first tenor guitar. My impression is that it's a good entry-level instrument. Be aware that it has a laminated top and will benefit from a setup to lower the action. The factory action on mine was high but not unplayable by any means. Laminated tops are of course more resistant to changes in temperature and humidity than solid tops. The tone is bright, and it's fun to play a four-string guitar that's tuned in fifths like a mandola. I work as a delivery driver and this tenor guitar is a very convenient size to bring along in the car to play between orders. It's quite small compared to a standard 6-string.

Great guitar, but a few issues…..

By Daniel Hays from STERLING, CO on January 20, 2022

I've been wanting one of these for a while and finally pulled the trigger last week. First, let me say that I'm REALLY pleased with this Ibanez—it plays well and sounds bright. In fact it sounds better than a six string I had.
The problems had to do with shipping. My salesman took my order over the phone and somehow placed the order with an old address I've not lived at going on 4 years. I didn't realize this until a text notification told me it was delivered—to my old address in another city. I drove the 35 miles over there to get it —that was the only option I had.
Upon unboxing the guitar I discovered corrosion on the two low strings. This is the first big hiccup I've had with Sweetwater in a half dozen or so purchases, but it's enough to make me take a long pause before ordering another instrument or equipment from them.

I want to like it more than I do

By Eric Lewis from Lafayette, LA on May 25, 2022

If, like me, you're coming from a traditional acoustic guitar background, and you're too clumsy for the mandolin, the tenor guitar is an interesting shot down the middle. And I think I'll definitely continue to play one strung in a mandolin tuning, but man, this thing will not stay in tune. It's kind of frustrating when you start getting your head around the tuning and learning chord shapes and it just sounds terrible. And then you realize it's because the **** thing has gone out of tune again. For what you're paying, it's hard to get too strident about it. There are times when this baby absolutely RINGS OUT, and that's great. But by the end of the song, one or two strings have just shot out in different directions, and it's miserable. My debate now is whether or not to replace the tuners to see if that helps or to just chalk this up to being a beginner's instrument and save my money for a nicer one.

Decent introductory instrument

By Pete on May 24, 2022

This tenor guitar at its price point is a decent instrument. Good fit and finish with playable action. The neck width is a bit thin but I was able to play it. The tuners work well and it has kept its tune nicely. The smaller body is comfortable to play, but its size sacrifices bass and projection. With the original strings, it sounds a bit shrill.

I did try out a "next step up" Blueridge tenor guitar which has an OM size body and it was definitely more of a professional level instrument with better bass response and projection. However, for me, I found it difficult to justify its 3 times more expense.

The strings that came on the instrument from the factory were highly corroded. Once I changed them it really woke up the tone and loudness. I would highly recommend you change the strings to get a better sense of the guitars sound before coming to any conclusions.

Whether this tenor guitar is right for you really depends on what your intended use may be. For me, I was simply looking at exploring the sonic palette of a tenor guitar when played with regular 6 string guitars at an introductory price point. So this fit the bill nicely. If you are considering playing the tenor guitar more seriously, as perhaps one of your main instruments, this may be too entry level. But it could be a good entry point to see how far you want to go with this class of instrument.

OK instrument

By Mike from Missouri Ozarks on March 13, 2024 Music Background: Amateur musician

For the price it is an OK instrument. Cost just over $. It is not a serious instrument that one would use professionally, just something for fun. I think the design is good (a mini dread). However, it would be a better buy at $ more ($ total) if Ibanez would give it a solid spruce (sitka) top and use a better wood for the neck. I do like the laminate back and sides of Sapele, but solid Sapele would not cost that much more. I am enjoying it, but would have gladly paid more for better construction materials. I would recommend this to anyone wanting an inexpensive instrument for home play only. It is not for someone wanting to record or use professionally.

Not everything in this world is perfect.

By Sweetwater Customer from Florida on September 21, 2022 Music Background: Musician 50 years+ ukes, guitars, bass

This instrument has a rich full sound . The fit and finish is beautifully crafted. It plays easily. One thing that i cant seem to solve is a slight buzz on the E and B sting 1st and 2nd fret. Not always but depending on where you pick or strum the string. Ive adjusted the neck, leveled frets, made heigt adjustments to the bridge, also elevated the grooves on the nut.I still get that infrequent annoying buzz. So I would love this instrument if it didnt annoy me to play it.

Disappointed

By Sweetwater Customer on March 23, 2017

Although I must say upfront that Sweetwater is the best, most customer oriented company that I have ever had the pleasure to do business with, I was disappointed in my recent purchase of the Ibanez PFT-2 Natural 4 sting guitar. It has too small of a fret board for me to comfortably finger chords and I had a very hard time keeping it in turn. Even one of our guitarists from our Praise Band couldn't get it in tune. But with that being said, I am returning it to Sweetwater and they have no problems with that as they want me to be happy....like I said, great company to do business with.
