Re-creating the Weissenborn Magic

Take a trip back to the prewar era with the Gold Tone SM-Weissenborn+ Hawaiian-style slide guitar. The SM-Weissenborn+ retains a solid mahogany top, which sets it apart from the laminated all-sapele body of the standard Gold Tone GT-Weissenborn model. It leverages the same hollow-neck design of the original Weissenborn guitars, which allows the notes to bloom and mature before they leave the soundhole. You get a fretless fingerboard inlaid with maple fret markers and traditional inlays. The guitar also flaunts maple and mahogany rope inlays, which look stunning. If you’re looking for a fantastic acoustic slide guitar, make sure to audition a Gold Tone SM-Weissenborn+ Hawaiian-style slide guitar from Sweetwater.

Note: Due to the SM-Weissenborn+’s vintage-style construction, you must maintain the string gauges and tunings Gold Tone recommends. G tuning (DGDGBD), D tuning (DADF#AD), and similar tunings are well within the SM-Weissenborn+’s limitations, but you must ensure that any other intended tuning or gauge is safe before stringing up your instrument. Otherwise, you risk permanent damage. Please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer with any questions.

Hollow-neck design delivers unparalleled resonance

The SM-Weissenborn+ is made from mahogany, a distinct upgrade from the laminated sapele body of the GT-Weissenborn. The back and sides are made from laminated mahogany, while the top is solid. All-mahogany guitars, such as this one, are well-loved for their warm voice and ability to accompany vocalists. Plus, the SM-Weissenborn+ leverages the same hollow-neck design as the original Weissenborn guitars, which provides a larger space for its notes to resonate.

All-mahogany body with a solid top

As Gold Tone’s deluxe Hawaiian-style slide guitar, The SM-Weissenborn+ comes with an upgraded solid mahogany top. Solid tops are preferred by discerning players due to their increased resonance and projection. Plus, since the top isn’t being stifled by layers of glue, this guitar responds to your lightest touch. And because it’s made from mahogany, this top imbues your sound with a woody midrange and warm overtones. The SM-Weissenborn+ is an excellent fit for players searching for a more responsive and resonant Hawaiian-style slide guitar.

Deluxe binding and inlays

Aside from its solid top, the SM-Weissenborn+ flaunts extra visual appeal. It features inlaid maple fret markers for perfect slide positioning. The fretless fingerboard also comes with eye-catching traditional inlays. But that’s not all you get! Gold Tone applied maple and mahogany Rope binding to the body and fingerboard. Are you seeking an authentic vintage-inspired Hawaiian-style slide guitar? Look no further than the Gold Tone SM-Weissenborn+.

Reviews

A new musical path!
I first heard a Weissenborn acoustic lap steel played by Ed Gerhard in 2009. The haunting sound and harmonic overtones left a huge impression.

I had talked to my sales engineer Mitch Dazey a year ago when I noted that Sweetwater was a dealer for Gold Tone instruments. Mitch said that he could get a Weissenborn on special order.

Lo and behold, one was in stock last month (March 2025) - conveniently after receiving my tax refund. I pulled the trigger.

I waited the recommended 24 hours before unboxing it. It was expertly packed, as usual. As an unexpected bonus, the instrument was shipped with a hard case. Very nice!

This is an all-mahogany instrument with a solid top. Its rich mahogany hues and the "rope" binding make it a joy to look at.

I play a little of slide guitar (electric and acoustic), and have played around with my electric lap steel. So I already have some tone bars on hand and am comfortable playing an instrument on my lap.

I noted both the high and low strings were wound backward on the tuning posts. Not a big issue - I will correct that when I change strings.

The sound if this instrument is exactly what I hoped for. The complex harmonic overtones are wonderful - the guitar's hollow neck is what gives it this moody, atmospheric sound.

The tuning keys are adequate for now, but I may replace them at some point. The low notes on the low string are not very robust - but that is probably a combination of poor technique and the stock strings.

The instrument is tuned to open D. It will not tolerate dobro G tuning (GBDGBD), but will accept Keef-style open G (DADGBD).

I like that I can play this without needing finger picks. Many of the artists I follow don't use them. I am getting used to a thumb picks, which helps with string attack and when muting the lower strings.

I am learning from a couple guys on YouTube and a couple hours can go by quickly! Using a tone bar is both challenging and rewarding.

Overall 4 stars- because of the two backward strings and the quality of the tuners.

Eventually I'll put a magnetic pickup in, but not until I am ready to play out with it. This will make me different than other acoustic solo performers.
Music background: Guitarist since 1969. Many bands (country, rock, blues). Now co-hosting an acoustic open mic.
