About Keyboards & Synthesizers
Choosing the perfect music keyboard or synthesizer is a big decision. Whether you’re buying your first keyboard or adding another instrument to your music-making collection, we’re here to help you navigate the vast array of choices you’ll find on these pages. To get you started, here are a few points you might want to consider when choosing your ideal music keyboard or synthesizer.
Piano keyboards
A great place to start is a piano keyboard. It’s the ideal instrument for those just beginning their musical journey. Whether you want an acoustic grand piano for your living room, an acoustic upright piano for your music classroom, or a maintenance-free digital piano for your house of worship, Sweetwater can hook you up with the right music keyboard for your needs.
Synthesizers
If you’re into EDM or vintage synth-pop music, you’ll need a synthesizer. The first consideration would be polyphony. Classic monophonic subtractive synthesizers can only play one note at a time, making them a natural choice for fat synth basses and searing leads. A few synths are duophonic, but most modern synths are fully polyphonic, so you can play chords on them. Do you want a synth with a music keyboard? If you’re already using a MIDI controller with virtual instrument plug-ins, adding a hardware synth module or two to your setup can really expand your sonic horizons. Choose from Eurorack and other modular synthesizers from Moog, Pittsburgh Modular, Doepfer, Waldorf, and Dave Smith Instruments. Into beat production? Check out a pad controller from Akai Professional, Ableton, or Native Instruments.
Electric organs
Perhaps you’re a fan of the legendary Jimmy Smith, who helped popularize the B-3 organ with his unique brand of instrumental soul-jazz fusion. Sweetwater has a comprehensive selection of electric organs from noted manufacturers that include Hammond, Nord, Roland, Crumar, and Yamaha.
Keyboard workstations
Maybe you’d like to “have it all” in one music keyboard. You’d be looking at keyboard workstations from Korg, Kurzweil, Yamaha, or Roland. If you want to compose and arrange all within one streamlined keyboard, check out our portable and arranger keyboard category. Yamaha and Casio are the big players in this space.
