Professional Marimba Playability on a Beginner Budget

Birthed from a vision to make its beautiful and world-renowned marimbas a budget-friendly convenience for students, educators, and aspiring professionals, Malletech developed the Mtech series of concert marimbas. The idea that financial accessibility shouldn’t mean a lack of quality is a vision not lost on Malletech’s engineers. Spanning more than four octaves, the warm and vivid sound of this marimba’s African padauk bars supplies a projection and ring that you’d expect to find on the most esteemed world stages. Percussionists here at Sweetwater are particularly fond of the “wide-bar” low end that offers a richly authoritative bass, elegantly complementing the resonant and glassy treble tones across the rest of its graduated keyboard. Just below its sophisticated wooden frame and solid end boards, this concert marimba features a sturdy, rivet-free nut-and-bolt resonator assembly finished in gold. Additionally, a smooth-operating height-adjustment system ensures that players of any size will feel comfortable while playing. Finally, you’ll find that the solid locking casters make transport on and off the stage a quick and painless process.

Masterful Malletech quality

For years, Malletech has introduced marimbas, xylophones, mallets, and more to the musical market, with all products exuding superior craftsmanship and tonal properties. How does the brand consistently achieve this? Just ask one of the world’s greatest classical marimbists: Leigh Howard Stevens. Actively involved with the company he founded and still concertizing to this day, Leigh has a major hand in designing all the instruments and mallets Malletech proudly produces. Sweetwater, likewise made up of passionate musicians, can see that this hands-on approach makes for a music company that not only understands its instruments but also puts all its joy and expertise behind each one that leaves its doors. Grab a pair of mallets or invest in a Malletech marimba — you’ll be glad you did.

Reviews

Professional Grade Marimba!
Rosewood is no longer king! Malletech has provided a professional grade option at a more reasonable price. Sure, it doesn't sound exactly like Rosewood and rightfully so! (its a different wood!). The select bars on the Mtech ring just as long as rosewood instruments, and I would argue that Padauk supports the low notes even better... I have had top level percussionists who own rosewood instruments tell me that they were surprised when I told them my Malletech was a Padauk instrument. I think most are hesitant to admit that this instrument sounds as good as it does because they spent twice as much on a rosewood bar marimba (sorry about that!). Sure, we've gotten used to the rosewood sound over a century... This instrument makes me wonder how much that necessity plays into invention. What is more important, the sound, or how pretty the bars are as you inspect the grain of the wood... I think Malletech is playing coy and is clever to advertise this instrument as "near professional" because they still need to sell they're more expensive rosewood models... oops.. the cat is out of the bag...

Shockingly Good

The construction is great, the height adjustment mechanism is really easy compared to the sliding lock a lot of others use and the sound is extremely warm and resonant. To my ear and from the feedback I've received playing alongside more expensive marimbas it has the same richness you'd get from rosewood. For the price it's amazing, you'd need to spend an order of magnitude more before this starts to get outclassed.
