The Original Modern Steam-bent Snare

When you choose a Solid Shell Snare by Noble & Cooley, you’re taking part in a drumming tradition that spans over a century and a half. Steam bent from a premium cut of rock maple at the company’s original location of Granville, Massachusetts, this snare’s sound delivers a combination of natural resonance and truly classic warmth, biting just like a professional backbeat should. Its "pancake"-style shell dimensions of 3.875 inches (depth) x 14 inches (diameter) make it a superb and elegant choice for the symphonic concert stage! From the hand-cut bearing edges to the freeing and finely engineered adornment of Noble & Cooley's patented hardware, the Solid Shell Snare is designed to optimize both playability and tonal stability. Drum experts here at Sweetwater know a winner when we see one!

Traditional steam-bent maple shell

Noble & Cooley takes great pride in being the leading developer of the modern steam-bent drum shell, and that pride is infused into every curve of their Solid Shell Maple Snare. Handpicked for compositional uniformity, you’ll find the grain of this 1/4-inch cut of rock maple to be of the highest standard, expertly engineered with a traditional steam-bending procedure that predates any other drum on the market. This process creates a freely resonating drum that maintains an enviable amount of tonal warmth and gritty attack. And with hand-cut bearing edges to the nearest 1/10,000th of an inch, you can expect a professional degree of tunability and pitch consistency that is built to last!

Patented hardware all around

The Solid Shell Maple Snare comes fitted with handfuls of Noble & Cooley patented hardware. Starting with its snare system, the Solid Shell boasts their proprietary smooth brass throw-off and cam-action snares, affording drummers the freedom to tighten things up without engaging too much choke underneath. On the exterior of the shell, the quality appointments continue, most notably through Noble & Cooley’s own Nodal Point lug assignment technology. With each lug post positioned at the nodal point of the shell, the natural tone of the Solid Shell Snare is optimized and free of negative sonic influence from the presence of the accompanying hardware. It’s the perfect solution for bridging drumhead sound and shell sound in your final tone!

The timeless drum making of Noble & Cooley

Noble & Cooley drums aren’t just ordinary instruments — they’re pieces of American history! For nearly 170 years, Noble & Cooley has manufactured drums in Granville, Massachusetts, challenging modern innovation and accomplishing staggering feats along the way. From modernizing the steam bending drum-making process to designing gigantic world-record instruments — and even one from wood split by Abraham Lincoln — the company has perpetually stood in a league of its own since its dawning. Six generations of ownership later, Sweetwater is proud to work so closely with such an esteemed, high-quality drum manufacturer!

Reviews

Simple design, great sound, elegant look
I was hesitant to buy this at first sight unseen, but I watched the youtube video on how they were made and was very impressed. I haven't bought a brand new snare drum in a long time and really wanted something special.

I was not disappointed!

I have a few 4x14 snares already (brass, metal, wood). What surprised me out the box was the weight of this drum. Much lighter than the rest. Also, because of the lug design it has 10 lugs where all my others are 8. I find the 10 lug to tune better and more consistent.

The throw off is simple but it works, and the design of the snares was very good as well. I was able to tune the bottom head evenly and get minimal buzz.

It came at a medium tuning which I'm sure would be great for rock, but the primary use of this drum for me is for jazz combos/big bands so I have it at a higher tuning.

It comes with a Coated ambassador head that I changed right away to a Fiberskyn diplomat (just my personal preference). I found the drum to be extremely sensitive (in a good way) with brushes, stick shots and has a nice ring for rim shots.

Overall, I like the feel and sound of the drum and am absolutely satisfied with the service I received from Sweetwater.
