The Mesa/Boogie Amp LegacyMesa/Boogie has been shaping the sound of music and guitars since 1969 — and shows no signs of slowing down! Founded by Randall Smith, the company then known as Mesa Engineering specialized in modifying classic amps to achieve greater levels of output and gain. Mesa’s early clients included renowned musicians such as Carlos Santana and Keith Richards. Exposure from these high-profile guitarists helped Mesa/Boogie become a household name within the amp community and spearhead the boutique amp movement. Sound and Fury: The Mesa/Boogie Mark SeriesMesa/Boogie unveiled its first official amplifier in 1971: the Mark I. This dual-channel amp found far-reaching success even beyond Mesa’s core clientele, with players praising its 5-band EQ and cascaded tube gain stages for influencing their signature sounds. The success of the Mark I eventually led to the flagship Mark Series and helped launch Mesa/Boogie into the ranks of amp royalty, with milestones along the way including the Mark IIC+ and Mark V. The Mark Series continues to break new ground today in models like the genre-bending Mark VII, which represents a “greatest hits” of the line in its ability to elevate any style of music, from country twang to metal grind. Power Meets Precision: The Mesa/Boogie Rectifier SeriesBy the 1990s, guitarists jaded by refrigerator racks and large floor units clamored for guitar amps that could provide a wider range of sounds. This led Mesa/Boogie to create the Rectifier series. These ferocious heads and combos forever changed the landscape of high-gain music and soon became synonymous with the West Coast guitar sound. With the success of the Rectifier series, Mesa forever set the stage for the metal, punk, and hard-rock scenes. Thanks to their straightforward designs and rich saturation, amps such as the Dual Rectifier and Rectifier Badlander continue to be go-to options for guitarists seeking massive tone without fuss. Beyond Amps and Cabs: Mesa/Boogie’s Pedals and AccessoriesThe Mesa/Boogie product family has grown to provide countless ways for even non-Mesa amp users to shape their tones. These include:
And that’s just a partial list!
