Mesa/Boogie '90s Dual Rectifier 100-watt Tube Head - Standard Reviews

100W, 2-channel Tube Guitar Amp Head with Bold/Spongy Switch, Style/Cloning Switch, Rectifier Select Switch, Bias Switch, and FX Loop - Standard

Few guitar amplifiers have made a more significant impact on heavy guitar tones than Mesa’s original 1990s-era Dual Rectifier Solo head. Indeed, the Dual Rectifier’s sublime melding of aggressive lows, harmonic-rich highs, and meticulously scooped mids redefined what high gain was supposed to sound like. While modern Dual Rectifiers definitely deliver the gut-punching goods, many Recto enthusiasts will tell you there’s something special about the 1990s-era model. This reissued Mesa/Boogie ’90s Dual Rectifier gives Recto aficionados everything they could wish for, including the legendary Orange/Vintage and Modern/Red channels, complete with Channel Cloning. That said, the ’90s Dual Rectifier flaunts a number of modern upgrades, most notably an improved Clean mode. Moreover, in addition to the usual EQ and Gain controls, the ’90s Dual Rectifier includes a Bold/Spongy Power switch, a Rectifier Select switch, and a Bias Switch toggle for custom-tailoring your tone, along with a Slave output and Effects Loop jacks. The Mesa/Boogie ’90s Dual Rectifier enables modern guitarists to wield the ferocious Recto tone that has dominated the high-gain world for the past three decades.

The key difference with this amp

By Buzz from Ohio

This 'Standard' appearance is the classic Dual Rectifier look that I wanted.. and I snagged one of these the second I saw it!

On to sound...

The key difference with these amps are that all the gain is from multiple 12AX7 gain stages, no diode or transistor clipping at all. The result is big, thick distortion. Adding an overdrive then tightens up the whole thing.

Except for the Soldano SLO amps, I'm not aware of any other amp that do this. After owning most of the high gain flagships, I've come full circle and realize this Dual Rectifier is what I really want

As far as comparing to the original ( I had a rev.F and rev.g during their hay day). I think this new one is mostly better than the original. The switching is now silent. The original had opto‑isolators switching and it was usually a loud POP when changing channels. That is not so with this reissue. The amp is also much, much quieter.. less transformer hum and less noisy.

As far as sound comparison, the rev.f vintage was a bit more loose and gooey. This sounds more like the rev G vintage. I happen to love the more gooey rev f so there is that compromise but i think most people will prefer this (rev g).

Also, the trick with turning the treble all the way off, giving the tone a wider upper mid boost is still there on this re-issue!

With the loop master you can get all the goo at total bedroom levels.

Didn't realize it but this is my desert island high gain amp.
