Harnesses the Spirit of Radio

Geddy Lee's melodic playing is replete with harmonic ear candy, eschewing run-of-the-mill root-note plodding for higher-register, lead-like parts. Hard-hitting bass lines like Lee's demands an equally hard-hitting tone. That's where the Tech 21 YYZ Geddy Lee Shape-shifter Signature SansAmp comes in. The YYZ packs the essence of Geddy Lee's tone — and his gargantuan rack rig — into a compact preamplifier/DI pedal. And, best of all, this fly-by-night setup does it without sacrificing an ounce of tone. To top it off, you can even pipe this massive tone straight into a PA. This all-analog pedal supplies you with an expansive range of adjustability, unlocking a wide spectrum of bass tones. If you're searching for way to achieve a colossal bass sound without a bulky stack of speaker cabs, take the YYZ Geddy Lee Shape-shifter SansAmp for a test drive — it delivers a thunderous tone worthy of the limelight.

Drive and Master controls deliver hard-hitting sound

Building a hard-hitting bass tone is a breeze with the YYZ Geddy Lee Shape-shifter SansAmp. It includes individual Drive and Master controls for dialing in grit and volume — crank it, and you'll experience a glorious tube-like distortion that's closer to the heart — it's guaranteed to electrify an otherwise anemic track.

Shape your bass tone with EQ and Mix controls

No matter what sound you're imagining, you can create it with the Tech 21 YYZ Geddy Lee Shape-shifter Signature SansAmp. An active 3-band active EQ gives you near-unlimited sound sculpting. A selectable Boost stomp switch delivers a 12dB presence boost for increased top-end distortion. You also get a Shape-shifter button that adds 6dB of "Schmegilka" on top, which Geddy Lee describes as "an indefinable thing of awesomeness." Finally, there's the Mix control, which enables you to go nuts with your tone and then mix in some of the unaffected DI signal for a more complex and coherent sound.

Run direct or feed your amp with killer bass tone

One of the things many of the gigging bass players here at Sweetwater love about the YYZ Geddy Lee Shape-shifter SansAmp is that once you have one, you'll never be without a usable bass rig again. Want to feed your bass amplifier? No problem! You can plug the YYZ in like a standard stompbox. Or you can bypass your amp's preamp and run the YYZ's output directly into its effects return. Or you can send your affected signal straight to the PA for authentic cranked-cab sound — no speakers required.

Tech 21 YYZ Geddy Lee Shape-shifter Signature SansAmp Pedal Features:

  • Replicates the heavy-hitting sound of Geddy Lee's bass rig
  • Individual Drive and Master controls for dialing in grit and volume
  • 3-band active EQ attains near-unlimited sound sculpting
  • Selectable Boost stomp switch delivers a 12dB presence boost for increased top-end distortion

Reviews

Apollo was astonished…

Basically Mr. Lee in a box. Absolutely love it. Comes with a booklet with some presets such as Red Barchetta, Camera eye etc. Sounds brilliant and is pretty close, have yet to experiment on my own. I have a Yamaha TRBX504, and use this preamp mostly with a Fender Amp. Paired with an Orange combo amp and you're on another planet.

Sweetwater is my go to for all gear. They'll even call to check on your delivery and help you set up all your gear. Top notch, customer for life.

Music background: Practicing
Signals get crossed
But it does come with a soft filter and reverse polarity in case our circuits get shorted.
New world man
This is what I've been looking for in getting my tone thanks Geddy!
Desert Island Pedal
This thing will make any bass sound amazing. I have an off brand P-bass that usually sounds terrible (when recording DI), the YYZ makes it sound like a $1000 Fender. If I could only use one pedal, this would be it. Nothing too fancy, just tone for days and very versatile. Sounds great in front of an amp or going direct to PA and sits your bass perfectly in the mix.
The best bass pedal / preamp ever!
I am one of the lucky few that got the limited edition MP40. This is the exact same pedal, except for the paint job. I use it for everything. Recordings, practice, and my live rig. It's even better than the original YYZ pedal because of the Shape Shifter and Boost modes. I leave the shape shifter on almost all the time. It's hard to describe what it does, my best guess would be that it changes the mid controls frequency from the standard on the original YYZ pedal. All I can say for sure is that it the absolute best tone I have ever had in 35 years of playing bass. I haven't used the boost feature a lot, it would be great for a solo to make it really cut through. It's nice to know it's there if I need it.
I cannot recommend this pedal highly enough, it's very versatile, works great on everything from pop to death metal.
Get one, you wont regret it.
