What is an ATA-style case?

The phrase “ATA” is commonly used when discussing flight or road cases, but what does this really mean? Now known as A4A (Airlines for America), the Air Transport Association (ATA) was founded in 1936, with the commonplace designation of ATA cases emerging in 1960. This resulted from the development of the ATA 300 compliance rules, or ATA Spec 300, giving us the commonly seen ATA 300 moniker that accompanies many flight or road cases intended for stored transportation. Because the ATA and its certification process no longer exist, the only way for a hard case to be certified by ATA standards of any kind is for a credible and independent lab to conduct the appropriate testing on a case. This would verify that its materials and construction meet ATA specification 300 standards as well as ensure its ability to withstand multiple factors, such as enduring at least 100 trips.
