Featuring eye-grabbing all-bamboo construction, the Kala U-Bass Bamboo exhibits a room-filling sound that belies its diminutive size. And, when it’s time to plug-in, you’ll be blown away by its natural-sounding electronics. Bass players at Sweetwater sure were! Exquisite all-bamboo construction

This U-Bass has a gorgeous solid bamboo body, which exhibits a wide spectrum of sound, from low-end to high-end frequencies, with ample projection and sustain. The U-Bass Bamboo comes outfitted with a satin-finished bamboo neck capped with a bamboo fingerboard that feels great in your hand and provides an incredibly comfortable playing experience.

Special strings, special sound

The secret behind the big sound of the Kala U-Bass is almost as cool as its small, ultra-portable format. It comes from the combination of the right tonewoods and Aquila's Thunderblack polyurethane strings. These lightweight, large-diameter strings provide plenty of low-frequency oomph, which resonates with a deep, rich, and wooden quality that's reminiscent of the coveted upright sound yet colored with a uniquely musical U-Bass quality all its own.

Packed with premium appointments

Other standout appointments that add to the rich sound and stunning looks of the U-Bass Bamboo include a Graph Tech TUSQ nut and saddle. In addition, custom black die-cast tuning machines keep you in tune and add a nice visual enhancement. Finally, U-Bass electronics kick out great amplified tone when you plug in, complete with built-in volume and tone controls, and an onboard tuner — no more fiddling with clip-ons or tuner pedals.

Fun alternative
I bought this on a whim for acoustic sets with my church band. I have always been a precision bass guy but wanted to broaden my horizons. I will admit, when I first picked it up it was almost comical. Compared to my p basses it's tiny! I felt like King Kong trying to play bass. The strings also took some getting used to. But after about an hour, I was having a blast. The tone of this bass really does sound convincingly like an upright. I played through some old country and rock tunes and it sounded fantastic. Sounds great through my sansamp. I will also say that the bamboo is absolutely beautiful and the craftsmanship seems stellar. I plan on playing go it live soon. Thanks Sweetwater for another fine instrument!
Music background: Former pro bassist and now church musician.
Not just a novelty item
I had a little bit of buyers remorse immediately after ordering one of these. I couldn't help but think to myself- "did I really just spend $ on a little novelty instrument? I mean seriously? a ukulele bass?" All of that remorse went away immediately as soon as I got my hands on it. This is NOT just some little novelty instrument. It has such an awesome woody, big, upright-like sound and it's really hard to put this thing down whenever I pick it up. It sounds great acoustically and unplugged is how I play it 90% of the time. It's not super loud unplugged- but in a quiet room it's more than sufficient!

The super-short-scale took no time at all to get used to, although the rubber strings take a little longer to adjust to as they tend to stick to your fingers way more- but I absolutely adore the charm and upright quality of these rubber strings so I doubt I'll ever swap them for anything else. Also I'll probably choose to throw on a thumb rest at some point, cause you're basically forced to use floating thumb technique anytime you play the E string.

SUPER lightweight, super fun to play & super nice sounding for it's size. The sound is different enough from any other bass that it holds its own, and the playability makes it just so much fun- it really is so easy to just pick this thing up while relaxing on the couch and start noodling around without having to pick up a 9-10lb long-scale bass and plugging them into an amp/DI.

ONLY downside is the amount of string/finger-noise when plugged in. It might be the nature of it being bamboo, but I find myself needing to turn treble ALL the way down on the pre-amp. OTHERWISE I could not be more satisfied with this instrument!!!
A Fun Instrument
I love this bass. I want to join an acoustic band just to be able to play it live; that's how good it sound through my rig. If you want upright tones without lugging around an upright, this is what you're looking for. But it can get some snarl in there too. I have kept the rubber strings on for now, but I did order the steel strings just in case I want to change things up in future. The on-board tuner is a welcome addition, as are the three-band EQ. This thing is a joy to play, and not as hard to adjust to as I thought it would be. I am half-considering one of their five-string solid-body as an alternative, but I hear these are hard to come by. As always, the fine folks at Sweetwater had it well-packaged and had it out to me in time to get adjusted to it over the weekend.
Music background: Cover band in HS, then an original band. For the past three years have been in a cover baand.
Big soundlittle bass
Yeah, I know, basses are supposed to be huge and heavy. Well, this Kala is small and light, and yet deep throated. I love the sound it will get me playing bass more.
Music background: Lifelong enthusiast.
Fun
This is an enjoyable bass to just have fun at home or while traveling. Well made and lots of fun at a low price.
