Fun alternative
I bought this on a whim for acoustic sets with my church band. I have always been a precision bass guy but wanted to broaden my horizons. I will admit, when I first picked it up it was almost comical. Compared to my p basses it's tiny! I felt like King Kong trying to play bass. The strings also took some getting used to. But after about an hour, I was having a blast. The tone of this bass really does sound convincingly like an upright. I played through some old country and rock tunes and it sounded fantastic. Sounds great through my sansamp. I will also say that the bamboo is absolutely beautiful and the craftsmanship seems stellar. I plan on playing go it live soon. Thanks Sweetwater for another fine instrument!
A Fun Instrument
I love this bass. I want to join an acoustic band just to be able to play it live; that's how good it sound through my rig. If you want upright tones without lugging around an upright, this is what you're looking for. But it can get some snarl in there too. I have kept the rubber strings on for now, but I did order the steel strings just in case I want to change things up in future. The on-board tuner is a welcome addition, as are the three-band EQ. This thing is a joy to play, and not as hard to adjust to as I thought it would be. I am half-considering one of their five-string solid-body as an alternative, but I hear these are hard to come by. As always, the fine folks at Sweetwater had it well-packaged and had it out to me in time to get adjusted to it over the weekend.
Big soundlittle bass
Yeah, I know, basses are supposed to be huge and heavy. Well, this Kala is small and light, and yet deep throated. I love the sound it will get me playing bass more.
