Player II Refines the Iconic Indispensable Fender Telecaster

The Player II series Telecaster combines timeless Fender tone and performance and pairs them with playability improvements from the Player II line! This Telecaster’s solid alder body and maple neck supply the snappy attack and fluid fidelity that keeps Telecasters in style year after year. Country twang? You bet, but you can also delve into hard rock, pop, Midwest emo, blues, and a laundry list of other genres, whether old-school or current. Two single-coil Alnico V pickups support the Player II Tele’s classic resonance with punchy mix-cutting levels suitable for fiery country picking, shimmering rhythm chords, high-gain rock, and beyond. What’s more, the Player II Telecaster’s modern “C”-shaped maple neck is a smooth player for purists and newcomers alike. And the real star of Player II series updates? Wait until you experience the rolled-edge rosewood fingerboard with softer broken-in corners, which yields an instant boost in comfort right out of the box.

Alder and maple — the essence of Fender tone

We’ve all heard the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” And that’s undoubtedly one guiding principle behind the Player II Telecaster. Classic construction and an alder body grant balanced comfort, whether sitting or standing. Alder oozes with quintessential Fender sonics: lively harmonic color, a fast response, and middle-of-the-road sustain that lends body to solos and chords. The Player II Telecaster has a revered solid maple neck and smooth rosewood fingerboard, supplying you with bell-like note clarity and snappy touch-sensitive attack to fingerstyle or plectrum play. In keeping with contemporary tastes, the neck offers speed-friendly agility with a more modern “C”-shaped profile suitable for virtually any player.

Player II perks

The Player II Series Telecaster features small changes that, although departures from yesteryear’s Teles, tend to suit today’s players and help them reach their goals quickly, even if that goal is spending less time on guitar maintenance! The Player II Tele has a 6-saddle string-through bridge. Compared to the original Tele’s 3-barrel bridge, this pivot brings huge intonation benefits, along with better tuning stability and a moderate bump in sustain. ClassicGear tuners by Fender frame the Tele headstock just right and perform more accurately with higher ratios than vintage tuners. Lastly, rolled fingerboard edges are an incredibly high-value addition. The superior comfort can’t be stressed enough — you get the smooth, musical feel of a worn fingerboard, all without losing that attractive mint-condition look and factory-fresh performance!

Famous pickups with a twist

You're sure to cut through the mix, thanks to the Player II Series Telecaster's Alnico V pickups. These single-coil pickups deliver classic sounds that have been with us since the dawn of the Tele, but with increased punch and output. The extra brawn of Alnico V pickups brings firepower and sizzle to chicken pickin' and leads. But the added oomph is also suitable for driving effects pedals or for getting stadium-sized tones when plugging into low-wattage combos, amp sims, and recording interfaces. Need less twang? The neck pickup smooths the cadence and body of clean jazz, country lines, and mellow riffs. Full-on amp distortion sounds great in either position, yielding tight lows and stinging highs. Aggressive twang, smoky jazz, saturated high gain — everything sounds great through these pickups.

The Fender Telecaster: a brief history

This is it: the original guitar that started Fender's march into contemporary music history. It appeared in the early 1950s and was first named the Broadcaster. The ingeniously simple design, the bolt-on neck, and the slab body all contribute to the guitar's trademark tones and player-friendly feel. From Nashville twang to blistering rock tones, the Telecaster sound has made its presence felt in nearly every musical category. The diverse list of Telecaster players — including Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, James Burton, Bruce Springsteen, Joe Strummer, and John 5 (and quite a few of us here at Sweetwater) — attests to the guitar's universal appeal.

Fender Player II Telecaster Features:

  • Timeless Telecaster tones, tweaked and refined for modern playability and performance
  • Solid alder body delivers well-balanced brightness and sustain for classic Fender versatility
  • Player Series Alnico V single-coil pickups fuel classic tone with extra output for today’s players and gear
  • Modern 6-saddle string-through bridge supplies a mean bite and excellent intonation
  • Maple neck with an all-encompassing Modern “C” profile
  • 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with a 9.5-inch radius

Reviews

Great guitar! My first electric, and I couldn't be happier.

Wow! What a great guitar. I'm a Sax player (mainly Tenor, Bari and Bass), but I love learning to make great music on any instrument I can. and decided to get a great guitar to set myself up for success. Since my main interests are Jazz Guitar, the Beach Boys, Glen Campbell, and 1950's-1970's Rock and Country, I figured a Telecaster would be perfect for me. Once I saw this color, I just had to have it. And man, it's great. I love the rolled frets and the rosewood fingerboard. The neck pickup is nice and warm when I want to play ballads, and the bridge pickup has enough bite to play rock or metal with my band. It's that classic sound, man! Love the color, too. Man, it's so 60's and it's SO cool. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. This guitar makes it FUN to practice. I like it so much that I'm going to buy the Player II Jazz Bass in Birch Green, as well.

My only problem was that the low E string had some intonation issues.. but I enjoy repairing and modding instruments anyway, and it's not very hard to correct. The neck feels great to play. Very slim and comfortable, even for a shorter guy like me (5'6). I also put some Flatwound 11's on there. Great sound and feel! Additionally, I'm going to make a pickguard out of Side B of a Danish pressing of "The Beach Boys Today!" (their best album, in my opinion..). I think the parchment pickguard is a LITTLE too sterile (mine almost looks pure white), I'd rather have a mint pickguard. But part of playing guitars is customizing them to fit your style, so I can't be pressed about it at all. I'll update the picture when I finish this project.

I think this is a great guitar for the intermediate player, or the beginner who wants a great instrument to start on. Why not buy what you REALLY want the first time? I hope this reveiw helped you to make an informed decision about your next purchase. Finally, shout out to my sales engineer, Keith Klikas. I was going to buy this guitar anyway, but he's always helpful and provides good service. , Sweetwater!

Amazing Guitar

I bought this guitar and it is amazing. My first tele as I primarily play a custom made Strat. Sounds amazing and plays amazing. Fretboard is fast and the strings are actually very good from the factory so I have yet to replace them. I can't wait to change them to clean up the fretboard as my fingers are turning black from the factory fretboard stain residue. The sound is twangy running through my Fender USA fully Fromel modded Blues Jr or my Fender Champion 2-2 x12 100 watt amp through TS808 and reverb. It's heavenly!. I Also Sweetwater has amazing customer service! Get this guitar if you are interested and maybe replace the pickgaurd with the sweet 3 ply mint green one I did!

Blown away!
I purchased a MIM Tele in 2011 and loved it! It actually felt better than an American model I've tried. I'm a Strat guy so it was many years before I bought another Tele which was a 60's Classic Vibes Tele by Squire. I was very impressed as well. I swapped out the pickups and it made a difference. When I purchased the Player II in Birch Green, I was expecting something similar to the Classic Vibes but it was more reminiscent of my MIM I bought in 2011 white one main difference… no need to upgrade the pickups. I was blown away!!! I did have to change the strings up from 9's it came with to 10's. I time down a 1/2 step so I also reintonated and had to also lower the action. Once I completed those steps, this guitar played awesome. Thanks Geoff Allen for your service!!!

Fender hit all the checkboxes on this one
I think it's obvious Fender hit it out of the park on this model:
- extremely nice body color
- extremely nicely dark fretboard
- nice fret edges
- good, not-icepick or cheap sounding, pickups
- mim and a sub-$ price

if you are a modder:
- i wanted to note you can update the tuners to fender modern locking if you prefer, it has the same mount holes drilled - see pics.
- 2ndly, if you preferred a 3-saddle retro bridge it can be done, the holes line up the same, but you likely will see some line mark from the longer original bridge, again see pics.
Could not be any more stoked!!
Thank you Skyler and Dakota for working with me on the return and the subsequent purchase of my Player II Tele which is nothing short of amazing, the build quality, hardware are typically not expected in a guitar at this price!!
