The History Channel

Join Sweetwater and roll back the clock. The year is 1968, and EMI Studios London is in transition. Their classic, tube-driven REDD recording consoles are being replaced with the new, solid-state TG12345, soon to be used to forge the clean, punchy sound of the Beatles' Abbey Road album. What would you do for a channel strip from this legendary board? Chandler Limited, in close cooperation with Abbey Road Studios, brings you the TG Microphone Cassette, a full-featured channel strip that incorporates key elements of the historic desk. The Chandler Limited TG Microphone Cassette is comprised of three sections: Chandler's TG2 Pre-Amp, a Curve Bender EQ section (which includes Treble, Bass, and Presence controls), and the all-new TG1 Opto Limiter, which is independently patchable.

Groundbreaking sound quality

The EMI TG12345 was the most advanced recording console of its time. It featured 12 dual-channel input cassettes, with expanded equalization and a compressor/limiter on each channel. The groundbreaking sound quality of the new desk left its mark on recordings by the rock royalty of the era, including the Beatles' Abbey Road and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon albums, and solo albums by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. Never commercially available, the TG12345 desks were retired from service in 1983. But the legend lives on - in the Chandler Limited TG Microphone Cassette.

Chandler Limited TG Microphone Cassette Features:
  • A mono channel strip based on the legendary EMI TG12345 console
  • XLR Preamp/EQ input and output
  • TG1 Opto Limiter I/O separately patchable

Reviews

Finished Sound
This is an exceptionally great piece of gear. Everything you need to produce a world class vocal ( talent excluded )

I can't recommend it enough, if you can afford it don't hesitate for a second…

Really thoughtful piece of gear
Chandler never misses. This is definitely another hit for me! ( I own a pair of the REDD.47 preamps and I am in love with them). I was in the market for a channel strip since I need more pre's at my studio but I also wanted to be able to do some EQ & compression on the way into the DAW. This is a really incredible piece!

The preamp is similar to a 1073 but more aggressive and less muddy on certain sources / mics. I am a huge fan of 1073's but BAE and vintage Neve can get boomy at times. This pre is very detailed and clear, and can be pushed into tasteful saturation or all out distortion with great results. Virtually identical to all the Chandler TG preamps.

The EQ is like a scaled-down version of their Curve Bender EQ (very expensive, very good). While I wish the bass and treble had adjustable frequencies, the bands they've chosen are very versatile. The adjustable "presence" feature is very easy to dial in, and can be a game changer for close-miked instruments.

The compressor is awesome. I've never had so much fun trying to "find a sound" because there are so many great sounds to pull out of this compressor. It is an optical limiter, so it shares some characteristics with older American designs like the classic LA2A- but it imparts a different flavor... one that I am thoroughly impressed with.

All in all, this channel strip is not about the preamp, the EQ, or the compressor- it's about how they come together in a musical way! I think the pairing of EQ and compressor is particularly outstanding; the fixed bands on the EQ really smooth out your signal on the way to the opto limiter, and the "presence" boost/cut is good for notching out any nasty midrange frequencies that may get over-emphasized upon heavy compression.

Fantastic
Great channel strip for any kind of studio, and also fun to use as a hardware insert (better yet if you have two for stereo use)
The preamp is smooth but can be driven to get some bite and snap, the EQ is very musical and sounds excellent in tandem with the compressor, which is unique in its metering- but delivers a very rich, full-bodied sound. I haven't been able to make this thing sound bad yet... and I've been slamming it pretty hard at times.

When it comes to tracking, this unit is hard to beat. I'm usually not a fan of channel strips because they rarely perform on the same level as using a separate outboard preamp, EQ, and compressor for tracking, but this unit can easily compete with some of the best signal chains found in commercial studios. My typical vocal chain before this was a REDD.47, API 550A, and then either a vintage LA2A or Distressor EL8X- and I don't miss that "classic" chain when I'm using this channel strip instead. It's a real knockout on vocals!

I think Chandler makes some of the best gear money can buy, and this piece is further proof of that! I wish I could give it 6 stars (same with the REDD47 preamp. That thing blows me away every time). Give this piece a try and prepare to get goosebumps...

Hifi sound
The compressor is great the saturation you can get from the preamp is fun sounds thick and almost too perfect sometimes if it's dialed in the eq section can be fun to mess with for a presence boost
Great Piece of Gear!!
I'm somewhat of an amateur still when it comes to outboard gear but after having two of these units for about 1 1/2 years I can say that they perform to expectations! As advertised, they do give a vintage like color and warmth to the mix. On top of using them for the obvious direct recording of mics and instruments, I also like to use them in my bus and sent tracts them, often in stereo to add further compression and or color. My band plays a lot of electronic instruments like synths, drum sequencers, dj mixers, etc., so we get some real interesting results by running those ofter in stereo through these units. It creates a unique sound, that's for sure

The build quality is amazing. You can tell this is definitely a hand crafted piece of equipment and that craft definitely adds to the overall vintage vibe in regards to the looks. My only complaints is that it requires a Chandler PSU-1 power supply to run it. This is an extra $320 and is not sold with this unit. The power supply is also kind of a pain because you can't put it in a rack space and its design makes it where it generally have to sit really close the there audio path of all you gear.
